“SSG/R needs to mainstream #climate 🌿 and #environmental risks so the #security sector can help protect people 👥, #planet 🌎 and #peace 🕊️” 📖 We recently published the 3️⃣ report in DCAF’s stocktaking study linking #SSGR with climate and environmental security. This piece describes the case of #Brazil and follows from the previous reports on the Occupied Palestinian Territory and #SierraLeone in the same report series. ➡ Read the report: https://lnkd.in/eJkKN87b Brazil is the most biodiverse country in the world, and our report does a deep dive into the state of #Roraima. It describes and explores the role of the security sector in mitigating issues that put human and planetary security under pressure. Both environmental crime and #disasters take a toll on the people and can be tackled by the security sector. The report puts forward recommendations to international partners, national authorities, as well as specific security sector agencies. Approaching these complex issues holistically can not only strengthen #socialcohesion and diminish the impact of environmental degradation on communities but also contribute to #sustainabledevelopment and trust in security sector actors. “Mainstreaming #climate and environmental risks is paramount for SSG/R to enable security sectors help protect people, planet and #peace.” We've published the fourth report for DCAF’s stocktaking study linking SSG/R with climate and environmental security. Previous case studies focused on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Brazil and Sierra Leone. This most recent publication outlines findings from the #Philippines to add to the series of reports under this programme. Read the report here:https://lnkd.in/eirGpBAu The Philippines is facing various climate and environmental risks directly affecting human and planetary security. Due to its geographic location, it's highly exposed to earthquakes and subsequent disasters as well as typhoons and tropical storms. While functioning ecosystems can help mitigate the effects of these disasters, they themselves are under pressure from environmental degradation through illicit activities. Acknowledging and uncovering the links between environmental harms and #DisasterRiskReduction, as well as the role of the security sector therein is crucial. The report puts forward recommendations to international partners, national to local government actors and specific security sector agencies to help shape suitable actions. These actions can promote #SSGR: increasing the accountability and legitimacy of the #securitysector, strengthening social cohesion, weakening the impact of environmental degradation on communities, and contributing to sustainable #peacebuilding.
