Our Enhance programme in the East of England is a hugely exciting contextual leadership development opportunity for Foundation doctors and pharmacists (with bold plans to expand to other healthcare professions soon). We're looking for opportunities for social and community groups, local and national charitable services and other sectors/industries (including those not obviously related to healthcare, but where you think your service can have a positive impact) to host our future healthcare leaders in their setting for a day or two to explore a valuable and holistic picture of the health landscape, understand how services are commissioned/funded and to consider what a vital lifeline some services can provide. Governance 101 | Bite-sized Nuggets for Serious Fiduciaries GOV 143: The Arc of Justice   On March 31, 1968, Dr. King delivered a speech at the National Cathedral just five days before his death. The title: “Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution.” Among his most quoted phrases, “… the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”   Another historic quote from a man credited with saving the West in the 1940’s, Winston Churchill, comes to us from November 1942, after the United Kingdom won its first ground victory over the Nazis and Rommel’s storied, massive Afrika Korps in the North African desert. Three years into the War and some eighteen months after the London Blitz, Churchill shared this with the House of Commons (remember, much pain lay ahead, including the D-Day amphibious invasion, the impossible quest on the beaches of Normandy to wrest Europe from utter darkness): “Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”   Many organizations find themselves in turmoil. Our simple wish is that you find courageous fiduciaries, whistleblowers, and principled leaders, somehow, somewhere, to lead you toward the light.   The shading in this Becker’s piece of "this is all just a normal change of administrations" is a bit hollow, but we can forgive the use of little fig leaves to cover organizational nakedness after decades of pretending. The provision of health care is a sacred trust. People put their bodies and their hopes in the hands of their health care organizations and caregivers for healing and comfort. Health care board members have the awesome role to safeguard and strengthen this noble work. Through philanthropy, board members have the opportunity to promote the organization’s vision and to invite others to join. This purpose-filled activity allows the health care organization to create a stronger bond with its community while letting donors be part of something that fulfills the good they have in mind. Your organization has a clear purpose expressed in its mission. This collective purpose involves stakeholders from frontline workers to volunteers to executives. Philanthropy leaders must connect this collective organizational purpose to individual purpose that includes board members’ own values, their own visions of themselves at their best and their own routes to self- actualization. Organizations have to go beyond just fortifying board members in the fact that the organization’s collaborative purpose is virtuous and good; but instead, also meet with each board member to uncover individual purpose, passion and goals. My top 3 takeaways: (1) if we really want systems change we need leaders who are collaborative, bold and courageous(*cough* Shannon TL Isom ). We know all of the problems in our community- who is ready to truly solve them and create the Columbus of the future, now? (2) with recent data showing a decline in individual giving and an increase in corporate philanthropy, how is your org crafting your narrative and aligning your partnerships for better corporate engagement? (ex: childcare isn’t just about education and kids - access to high quality childcare is a workforce issue) (3) the human services sector isn’t just impacting people, but impacting the central Ohio economy. Michael Corey and the Human Services Chamber will be releasing a powerful new report soon that digs into that data more.
