Abu Dhabi-based airline Etihad Airways plans to recruit around 2,000 pilots, cabin crew, and mechanics this year in preparation for its expansion in 2025. The company aims to add more aircrafts to its fleet by 2025, necessitating the hiring of personnel to meet operational needs. According to Antonoaldo Neves, CEO of Etihad Airways, the recruitment drive will primarily focus on training pilots and flight attendants for the new aircraft set to join the fleet in 2025. Etihad Airways intends to increase flight frequencies, expand its route network, and capitalize on the positive trend observed in passenger traffic over the past year. The airline achieved an 86 percent passenger load factor in 2023, up from 82 percent in 2022. In its 2023 financial results announced on Wednesday, Etihad reported a total revenue of Dh20.3 billion, with a net profit of Dh525 million and an operating result of Dh1.4 billion. This growth was primarily driven by a Dh4 billion increase in passenger revenue year-on-year. Etihad is committed to nurturing Emirati talent through specialized development programs, including cadet pilot and technical engineering training. The company places a strong emphasis on Emiratisation, aiming to train Emirati pilots and engineers from the ground up. Neves expressed his aspiration for at least one-third of the airline's pilots to be Emirati, with a target of 35 to 40 percent in the future. One of Europe's Largest Flight Attendant Organisations Stands with Emirates Crew Against Inhumane Working Conditions During Historic Storm The EUROPEAN CABIN CREW ASSOCIATION (EurECCA), representing over 70% of organized cabin crew in Europe, has expressed solidarity with Dubai-based Emirates cabin crew, condemning the airline's disregard for health and safety during recent historic storms. In a statement, EurECCA declared: "EurECCA STANDS ALONGSIDE EMIRATES CABIN CREWS FORCED TO TAKE DUTY DURING THE WEATHER EMERGENCY. The numerous images and messages requesting support that our fellow flight attendants at the Emirates airline spread all over European social media only confirm the well-known disregard for the most basic principles of health and safety at work. The legal impossibility of joining forces to assert one’s rights has brought out, during the exceptional meteorological events which have affected the Emirate area, all the limits of a “work system” where people count for nothing and, regardless, 'the show must go on'. It is the commitment of EurECCA – which represents over 35 thousand flight attendants across Europe – to raise attention to the continuing lack of rights and protections in some air carriers in the Gulf: these shortcomings emerge, dramatically, precisely in exceptional situations. The difference in terms of rights is also an economic saving (without wanting to mention the moral implications): at a time when global competition is increasingly challenging, the adequate level of protection guaranteed to one’s employees must also be of importance." In the UAE, it's illegal for employees to advocate for better conditions, prompting global support for Emirates staff. Sources of Sri Lanka Civil Aviation Authority say that 42 pilots of SriLankan Airlines handed over letters of resignation last week and 85 pilots have applied for certification letters from the Aviation Authority. Those sources say that a Sri Lankan Airline pilot gets a monthly salary of about 10,000 dollars, but the value of the dollar is calculated as low as 295 rupees, and the dollar is calculated as high as 370 rupees when paying salaries to pilots of other international airlines. The report also states that the pilots were paid a tax-free salary between 30,000 and 40,000 dollars in those airline services. According to the report, about 240 pilots are working in Sri Lankan Airlines and if about 80 pilots leave, the airline will be in a serious crisis by the middle of this year.

It was clearly busy in the manufacturers pavilions on the first day of the Dubai Air Show with some substantial orders placed. It's a good indication that optimism is returning to the aviation industry beyond the rhetoric and soundbites that have been a feature of the post pandemic landscape. Now we're actually seeing airlines investing in their future fleets and growth. Now what we need to see is a similar level of investment and commitment to attracting, recruiting and retaining the future generations of competent crews to fly these growing fleets. We've seen the first new fully funded schemes start this year - a trend that needs to continue.Recruitment remains a huge challenge and the smart airlines are starting to realise its a pilots market when job offers are made.
