🌟 Reflecting on an Unforgettable Journey at NSD Summer School 🌟 As the dust settles on an incredible two weeks, we, the organizers at IRGSC, are delighted to share our heartfelt gratitude and experiences from the recently concluded Summer School, which took place from 17.07. to 31.07.23 Collaborating with our esteemed partner CEDAR, we embarked on a transformative journey, aptly themed 'Learning from the Past and Working for the Present.' The Summer School was a profound exploration of history, culture, and resilience, taking us on a unique journey from West to East Java. Our central focus during this journey was to delve deep into the tragic events of the 1965 genocide in Indonesia, a dark chapter that shaped the nation's history. The group that participated in the summer school was a diverse mix from different parts of the world. With different educational and work backgrounds, they came from Africa (Kenya & Uganda), the USA, Europe (Bulgaria & Germany), and Asia (Afghanistan, Indonesia & China). This diverse group enriched our discussions and perspectives. Throughout these two enlightening weeks, we had the privilege of connecting with various communities directly or indirectly impacted by the events of 1965. Their stories showed us the importance of understanding our past to shape a better present and future. One of the most powerful moments of the Summer School was the opportunity to engage with three remarkable survivors of the 1965 massacres. Their stories shook us to the core, compelling us to reflect deeply on the importance of taking decisive action. Their stories are a stark reminder that we cannot be passive observers, but rather, we must be active agents of change. We also embraced the vibrant Javanese culture with open hearts and we found ourselves enriched by the wisdom and traditions that have been passed down through generations. Our gratitude goes out to everyone who participated in and supported the Summer School. It was your enthusiasm, passion, and commitment that made this experience so meaningful and impactful. Your shared curiosity and dedication to learning will continue to inspire us in our endeavors. As we now look to the future, we are filled with excitement and anticipation for the next Summer School. Building on the foundation of this transformative experience, we are committed to expanding our horizons and engaging with even more compelling themes and communities. In conclusion, the IRGSC Summer School has been a journey of reflection, understanding, and growth. Together with CEDAR, we have sown the seeds of knowledge and compassion, which we hope will blossom into positive change and deeper connections between communities. Thank you all for being part of this extraordinary adventure. *Cyber Attack on Bivitri and Student Activists: Repression of the Space for Civil Liberties and Academic Freedom* These days, the space for citizens' freedom of expression is increasingly vulnerable to attacks and threats in the digital space. One of them is Jentera's lecture Bivitri Susanti. Also, students and activists were exposed to hacking, unwanted posts, and even the forcible takeover of social media accounts. Those who are victims of hacking are people of integrity who continue to speak out regarding various problems in several actions responding to the discourse of the increase Presidential Periods, cooking oil prices, including covert efforts to smoothen the Omnibus Law by revising the Draft Law. Laws and regulations. Attacks are increasingly unstoppable, and the state has never been held accountable for. In addition to Bivitri, there was also Nining Elitos (labour union) who was hacked, and eleven WhatsApp accounts belonging to students were allegedly hacked or lost access ahead of the demonstration on April 21, 2022. The hacking was carried out between April 17, 2022 and April 20, 2022 The pattern of attacks is systematic through attacks on data privacy and freedom of expression of civil society. The state needs to remember that the International Covenant is protected and regulated, this is stated in Article 19. In addition, Article 28J paragraphs (1) and (2) of the Constitution, where the state is obliged to respect the human rights of citizens. Specifically in the academic community, the Surabaya Principles for Academic Freedom (2017), especially in the 4th and 5th Principles which have given a clear marker, that academic people must be free from restrictions and discipline in order to develop a responsible and respectful academic culture scientific integrity for humanity. Also, public authorities have an obligation to respect and protect and ensure measures to ensure academic freedom. Currently, the Indonesian Caucus for Academic Freedom (KIKA) and Scholar at Risk (SAR) are reminding the country through the UPR mechanism at the UN forum. Such attacks have become part of the report, so that authorities continue to comply with the principles of protection, respect and recognition of civil liberties, including academic freedom, which are a series of things that cannot be separated from the principles of international human rights law. We don't want the new authoritarian character in the digital space not to be shackled by state authorities or power networks, so we urge: 1. Civil society needs to strengthen solidarity in the civic space, because community participation is not heard 2. Encouraging full compliance for the Government not to use excessive force in shackled space for civil liberties 3. Guarantee the protection and security of human rights for citizens. 4. The government must learn to listen to and meet the demands of students and the people, instead of allowing repressive measures to continue.
