Civil society organisations (CSOs) often rely on volunteers to accomplish their mission. Therefore, ensuring that the organisation's #safeguarding measures extend to volunteers at all times is crucial. #Volunteers can play a significant role in protecting staff and individuals from harm. They can help create a safety culture by understanding safeguarding measures and participating in policy development. Our tip sheet covers safeguarding practices for recruiting and managing volunteers. While initially developed for civil society organisations in Ethiopia, this resource can be a helpful guide for any #CSOs seeking ways to protect their volunteers and improve their recruitment policies. By prioritising safeguarding, CSOs can create a safe and inclusive environment for all individuals involved in their mission. Download the tip sheet from here: https://ow.ly/ZEtn50QuMQ6

To celebrate Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW) Day – Telco is wearing orange in support and appreciation of all #SES volunteers across NSW. Over 10,000 NSW State Emergency Service volunteers work all year round to protect our communities during severe weather events. NSW Telco Authority is proud to assist NSW SES in its daily operations to prepare and respond to these events. Last year was one of the busiest years on record for the SES, with more than 80,000 calls for assistance and over 3,800 flood rescues. This required more than 1,000 resupply missions to deliver essential food, medical supplies and other items to isolated communities. Emilie Wells from NSW SES shares why the partnership with Telco is so important in protecting our communities during natural disasters. “The biggest impact is the operation of the Public Safety Network. This is a critical radio network for volunteers to communicate so they can operate in the safest way possible and assist the community.” Telco is proud to support NSW SES in helping to keep people and places connected and safe. #ThankYouSES #WOWDay2023 #WOWDay #WearOrangeWednesday #NSWSES #StateEmergencyService #EmergencyServices #FrontlineResponders #Volunteers #NationalVolunteerWeek #Community #NSWTelcoAuthority #NSWGovernment

#orphanagetrafficking #safeguardingchildren #carereform #communityservices #highcostofliving Safeguarding Children: Urgent Call to Action for Care Reform and Anti-Trafficking Measures The 2oth Feb KTN news on #traffickingchildren through orphanages (as per the video herein) is only a reminder of the series of the menace that has been historical in Kenya. #carereform and #deinstiutionalization was prioritized by the government, after the global trafficking report placed Kenya at the red zone in #trafficking through orphanages. Safeguarding the well-being of children has never been more critical. This news report draws attention to a pressing issue demanding our collective focus and urgency – the fast-tracking of care reform and stringent measures to prevent children from being trafficked through orphanages. This urgency is underscored by the vulnerability of children who find themselves in orphanages, often victims of circumstances beyond their control. Why Now? Recent #highcostofliving in Kenya, withdrawal several #socialservices such as bursaries, coupled by other events have heightened the risks faced by vulnerable children. As we grapple with the aftermath of crises, the potential for exploitation and trafficking increases. The call for care reform echoes louder than ever. Rogue orphanages pose a serious threat to children's safety and well-being. Prioritizing the closure of such institutions is a non-negotiable step in our commitment to protecting children. #Poverty remains a significant push factor, compelling families to make heartbreaking decisions. Governments and partners must channel efforts into providing #communityservices, eliminating poverty, and creating an environment where families can thrive together. Our Collective Responsibility: Awareness and sensitization are powerful tools in our mission to eliminate the negative impacts of orphanages as a breeding ground for trafficking. Education is key – from local communities to policymakers, from volunteers to corporate entities – everyone must understand the repercussions of supporting or tolerating institutions that perpetuate the cycle of vulnerability. It is time for duty-bearers and stakeholders to unite in a resolute commitment to safeguard children. Governments, NGOs, businesses, and individuals – each has a role to play in creating an environment where children are protected, cared for, and given the opportunities they deserve. The urgency to fast-track care reform and implement stringent safeguarding measures cannot be overstated. As a society, our responsibility is to build a future where every child is shielded from exploitation, where orphanages are relics of the past, and where poverty is not the driving force behind trafficking. Let us join hands, raise our voices, and take concrete actions to protect our children. Together, we can ensure that every child grows up in an environment that fosters their potential, security, and well-being.

International Firefighters’ Day is observed each year on 4th May. International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) is a time when the world’s community can recognize and honour the sacrifices that firefighters make to ensure that their communities and environment are as safe as possible. It is also a day in which current and past firefighters can be thanked for their contributions. Firefighters dedicate their lives to the protection of life and property. Sometimes, that dedication is in the form of countless hours volunteered over many years, in others, it is many selfless years working in the industry. In all cases, it risks the ultimate sacrifice of a firefighter’s life. The IFFD ribbons are linked to colours symbolic of the main elements firefighters work with – red for fire and blue for water. These colours are also internationally recognized as representing emergency service. #PackagesGroup #Pakistan #Sustainability

« As #disaster responses become more complex, there is a greater need to #coordinate the activities of #publicauthorities with #business operators, non-governmental organizations (#NGOs), and #citizen #volunteers. To achieve the goal of improving #disasterresponse, we recommend a process of “co-creation” where each of these groups is involved in #planning disaster responses and the roles of each group are clearly defined. This approach allows public authorities to take advantage of the experiences, resources, and ideas of these diverse groups. In turn, it allows groups outside of traditional #government response structures the opportunity to #contribute. »
