Happy Independence Day, Poland! Today, we talked with Dawid, a Frontex Fundamental Rights Monitor, whose job it is to assess the fundamental rights compliance of #Frontex activities. “I work in a team devoted to monitoring Frontex return operations. Our job is to observe and report on compliance with fundamental rights of return flights organised by Frontex, as well as cover the whole return process. This work requires an open mind, flexibility, empathy, and analytical skills. You also need to like people and working with them. “One of my favourite parts of Poland is located in the far northeast, in a triangle between Russia, Lithuania, and Belarus (borders again!). It’s called Suwalszczyzna. Different cultures and religions have clashed there for centuries, so a unique local folklore has been created. It is also a land of extraordinary history, including fascinating human stories of people living on the borderlines. Moreover, there is still wild nature to be found there – hills, winding rivers, the famous Augustów Forest, and numerous lakes. You can sail, hike, bike, and try very original dishes (a mix of Polish, Russian, Lithuanian, and German cuisine). In wintertime, you will experience a real, frosty, and snowy winter.” What words come to your mind when you think about your country?  “First of all - family. To me Poland is like a huge family with a difficult past, full of relatives we argue with. Family raised on contradictions, a little bit chaotic, but in the end, when it comes to important things can unite despite differences, work together, support each other, and help those in need. Secondly - beauty. Poland is beautiful in its diversity.” What inspires you in your work? “I am inspired by my Frontex colleagues – a bunch of fascinating personalities from different corners of Europe, adding a lot of experience and vibrant energy to every challenge we face. I also find inspiration in a very intense feeling I have, that we are all at a turning point in the continent’s history and can be a part of it, not only as witnesses but we can contribute to the process that will shape the future of Europe.” What word do you associate with Frontex? “Future.”  31 Frontex officers work in Poland at the moment, supporting land and air borders.  #independenceday #Poland #frontexstaff #fundamentalrights
