🌍 Escalation in Amhara, Ethiopia | 19 August 2023 🇪🇹 The ongoing conflict in Ethiopia's Amhara region enters its third week, marked by heated protests, confrontations between the Fano militia & military, and the recent declaration of a state of emergency. 🔹 Key Updates: Military regains control of cities from Fano militia (2). Overwhelming local support for Fano contrasts a growing mistrust of the government (3). A military strike on 13th August led to 26 fatalities and 55 injuries, impacting civilians (1,2). 🔹 Human Rights Focus: EHRC notes protester fatalities, looting, and extensive civilian casualties (5). International entities raise concerns over the state of emergency allowing unwarranted arrests, with several Amhara civilians detained (5). 🔹 Aid Delivery Challenges: WHO and Save the Children report crucial aid disruptions (3). Aid to a Gondar camp of 22,000 Eritrean refugees has been paused. Ensuring consistent aid access is paramount, especially for children (3). 🔹 What's Next?: Unabating unrest threatens more impediments to humanitarian work in Amhara. Evicted from cities, Fano could adopt guerrilla strategies, magnifying regional volatility and posing challenges for aid distribution (6). Government measures, such as internet cuts and curfews (4), if continued, might cause communication and logistical issues for aid agencies. The well-being of civilians and uninterrupted humanitarian aid remain top priorities. 🔗 Dive deeper into this situation with our comprehensive analysis: https://lnkd.in/gFR_XtRZ 📩 Stay updated on global events.
