I love getting to sit down with leaders who work on the innovation side of the traditional energy sector, like Scott Gale. I always learn so much about where the focus is and how a big company like Halliburton is placing its strategic bets for the future, and how it navigates that transitional balance with its current business and operations. We may want to see some of these companies moving faster toward transition but a clear step one to me is at least having a real line in the water when it comes to engaging with the innovators in the space.
While Halliburton boasts a century of expertise in oil field services, Halliburton Labs invests in and supports the innovation ecosystem around #cleanenergy and #climatetech. So how does this dichotomy play out? Cody sat down with Scott Gale, the Executive Director of Halliburton Labs, to discuss its startup collaborations, the interplay between its core business and these ventures, hydrocarbons' economic role, and the energy transition's trajectory. They also reflect on #Houston's evolving innovation ecosystem.💡 What role do you see hydrocarbons playing in our future energy mix? 🎙️ Don't miss out! Good podcast episode which goes over two of the worlds I live in - private equity and energy. One thing they hit on that I’ve found in my practice and that is a big issue for some of my clients is that the usual buckets of private equity, such as venture capital, infrastructure, growth capital etc., aren’t always a perfect fit for an important segment of the energy complex, being startups in the energy transition space. Sometimes the risk associated with a startup in this space is close to what a venture capital investor is willing to tolerate, but the capital required and the returns on full buildout are more suitable to a PE infrastructure fund. #privateequity #venturecapital #energy #energytransition

Hydro Carbons, predominately come from organics, that have been reduced to liquids, gases and solids, through pressure and heat, earths pressure cooker. They have been in existence for Millennia, and in each of those time periods, they have found new venues that has supported life and mankind. Now with the advent of managing the Solar wind and converting Photons for electrons, and using tropospheric wind to create electro magnetic energy, humanity has found alternative resources that will take us to the next level. Remember we are a carbon based specie, just another part of the eco-system. Have a Good Day.

Who has the customer owns the value chain 🔥💯 What a conversation we had with Fabio Carrara, founder and CEO at Brazilian solar energy firm Solfácil in the upcoming episode of The J Curve. Our wide-ranged conversation covered topics such as: ✔️The importance of market timing ✔️How to convert a single product or service into ecosystem ✔️What are the signs that a startup needs to pivot or is ready to scale And so much more. Below is a snippet into our convo. The episode drops on Monday October 30 🎧🎙️ PS: I’ve never made that many mental notes before and I am sure the wisdom that Fabio shared will be extremely valuable to other founders in LatAm and globally.

"The energy transition's going to happen because the biggest emitters invest in lower carbon-emitting processes, and we want to own those companies. We want to give them a lower cost of capital. We want shareholders to back the most progressive cement companies, steel companies, electricity, and utility companies that are actively investing in those processes." Stan Miranda is the Co-Founder and Chairman of Partners Capital, a global OCIO with $50 billion under management. I talk to Stan about the interesting DNA of Partners, a "money manager for money managers," his thoughts on the Endowment Model, how private equity partners manage their own personal money, and how Net Zero is the wrong way to think about the ongoing energy transition. I hope you enjoy my great conversation with Stan Miranda. Really great insight from Joanna Arras on the state of the venture and growth market in 2024. Especially loved her emphasis on how important (and sometimes underappreciated) true partnership and alignment is for founders when selecting a capital partner. Navigating capital raising strategy is a big decision for companies, especially in today's market. If you're a founder looking to start the conversation, please don't hesitate to reach out to myself or Joanna!
Joanna was recently featured on the Private Equity Value Creation Podcast with Shiv Narayanan. They discuss the challenges and opportunities for founders and investors in the current venture landscape, among many other timely topics.
