The "Jal Jeevan Mission" is a flagship program of the Government of India aimed at providing safe and adequate drinking water to all rural households in the country. It was launched in August 2019 as part of the government's efforts to address water scarcity and improve the quality of life in rural areas. Key points about the Jal Jeevan Mission include: 1. **Objective:** The primary objective of the mission is to ensure every rural household has access to a functional household tap connection (FHTC) with potable water. 2. **Implementation:** The mission is implemented at the grassroots level by Panchayati Raj Institutions and local communities. It emphasizes community participation and decentralized planning. 3. **Funding:** The government allocates significant funds to support the mission's implementation. It also encourages states to match this funding to accelerate the provision of tap water connections. 4. **Priority:** The mission prioritizes water-scarce areas, quality-affected areas, and areas with inadequate drinking water supply. Special emphasis is given to tribal and hilly regions. 5. **Technology and Innovation:** The mission encourages the use of appropriate technology and innovation to achieve its goals, including rainwater harvesting and groundwater and stored water. 6. **Awareness and Capacity Building:** It includes an awareness and information campaign to educate communities about the importance of clean water and proper water management. The Jal Jeevan Mission is a significant initiative to address the water needs of rural India and improve the health and well-being of its residents by providing access to safe and sustainable drinking water sources.

UST, has stepped up to provide potable water for 7,500 people in two water-locked villages at Kuttanad in the Alappuzha district. The non-availability of potable water had been a major issue and had also led to health problems among the people for the community for more than a decade. UST's initiative has been conceived and implemented to help the local communities tide over the acute water shortage crisis. The two drinking water treatment plants will now be the source of water for drinking, cooking and other domestic purposes for 1,000 families, comprising around 5,000 people in Mithrakary, and 500 families comprising around 2,500 people in Oorukary. The water treatment plants at the villages included a well, pre-filtration and chlorination tank, iron and unwanted minerals filter, reverse osmosis process, carbon filter, UV filter, supply tank and plant room.
