I participated in a two-day e-rights enhancing digital rights in Nigeria training programme designed for judges and lawyers, which took place on November 6th and 7th, 2023. The training programme was financially supported by the European Union and executed by Adocats Sans Frontieres France in Nigeria, in collaboration with Spaces for Change and the Centre for Information Technology and Development. During our discussion, we explored the topic of combatting the spread of misinformation in the digital realm during electoral periods. Additionally, we examined strategies to prevent the occurrence of internet shutdowns and uphold the principles of freedom of expression. Furthermore, we addressed the issue of online harassment directed against activists and the dissemination of illicit content. Lastly, we delved into the need of implementing cybersecurity measures to encourage the protecting of citizens' privacy. According to Section 33-46 of the Nigerian constitution, all individuals who possess Nigerian citizenship are granted the inherent entitlement to certain fundamental rights. For example, the Right to Freedom of Expression and the Press (Section 38) The concept of physical rights is analogous to that of digital rights; however, the proliferation of false information on the internet represents a significant constraint on the exercise of these rights. Therefore, the fundamental Human Rights enshrined in the constitution are not inherently absolute. It is imperative to refrain from disseminating false information targeting the Government or any individual, as such actions carry legal consequences.

I facilitated a session in the #NBA-ICLE Employment Law Training - Second Edition. Key Highlights from my paper on the International Labour Organisation Convention on Violence and Harassment (ILO C190): *First global binding treaty that acknowledges the right to a world of work free from violence and harassment including GBVH adopted in June 2019 by the ILO * Nigeria ratified the Convention on Violence and Harassment #C190 on November 8, 2022. This ratification offers a significant chance to enact legal and policy reforms that tackle gender-based violence and harassment (GBVH) and other types of violence and abuse in the workplace. * Violence and Harassment is a "range of unacceptable behavior and practices, or threats thereof, whether a single occurrence or repeated, that aims at, result in, or are likely to result in physical, psychological, sexual or economic harm, and includes gender-based violence." * Gender-Based Violence - shorthanded as #GBVH often occurred in the context of: - An abuse of power - A promise of reward - A threat of reprisal * It disproportionately affects women, but it can be experienced by any worker regardless of their gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation/LGBTIQ+ (men and women who do not conform to gender roles) * It often starts with sexist jokes * Domestic Violence is a workplace issue. It can affect women's work: Productivity, access to training or career development, economic independence, remote working/telework, etc. This has a huge impact on the "World of Work." * World of Work includes; public or private places, work trips, events or social activities, work-related communication, employer-provided accommodation, and commuting to and from work. * It leaves no one behind by protecting all workers and other persons in the world of work including employees as defined in national laws and practices as well as persons working regardless of their contractual status, job applicants, job seekers, volunteers, trainees, interns, and apprentices as well as workers whose employment has been terminated. * Nigerian Law empowers the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) to apply C190 directly when hearing cases - Section 254C (1) of the Constitution (Third Alteration) Amendments Act 2010. * An understanding of GBVH is critical to implementing C190. Remember violence and harassment is not part of the job. Many thanks to Nancy Ngozi Nzom (LL.B,BL,LL.M,AssocCIPD,ACIPM , HRPL) my co-facilitator for the referral. #GBVH #C190 #workerrights #women's right

DAY 2 OF THE 2023 NBA-ICLE LABOUR/EMPLOYMENT TRAINING:SYNOPSIS Topic: A Review of Recent Employment Statutory Proviaions in Nigeria. Moderator: Ose Okpeku. I should rather describe Ose Okpeku as a facilitator given that he contributed largely in the discussion. Facilitators: Nancy Ngozi Nzom (LL.B,BL,LL.M,AssocCIPD,ACIPM , HRPL) , Janet Anaele and Dr. Uche Attoh. First, Ose Okpeku expatiated the provisions of section 254C(1) generally and more particularly, section 254C(1)(f) & (h) of the 1999 Constitution. He lamented the archaic nature of labour/employment laws in Nigeria. He however expressed hope in the face of the above provisions of the above sections of the Constitution. Sections 254C(1)(f) & (h) of the Constitution empowers the National Industrial Court to apply international best standards in labour matters. He identified two International Labour Convention which Nigeria ratified on 8th November, 2022 (Convention 187 on healthy and safe working environment and Convention 190 on prohibition of violence and harassment in the world of work). He said that these two conventions more particularly Convention 190 have transformed and developed employment laws in Nigeria and brought the area of law in tandem with global standards. N/B: The Conventions though ratified will take effect one year from the date of ratification (i.e 8th November, 2023). Even at that, the Conventions are enforceable today on grounds of Interbational Best Practices. The facilitators took over on the fertile ground enabled by the moderator. They broke down the provisions of Convention 190 further. In the face of Convention 190, employers and employees alike must note that the world of work is meant to be what it is without more--APLACE OF WORK TO WORK AND NOTHING MORE. NOT FOR VIOLENCE OR HARASSMENT OF ANY SPECIE. The Convention offers protection in world of work. World of work is very wide and accommodate every kind of labourer/worker/employee whether it be skilled or unskilled, white-collar or blue-collar or "any colour-collar". Everyone is protected. Gone are days when the right of a labourer depended on whether he/she is a worker or an employee. The only caveat is that one must specifically plead and proof any international best standard sought to rely before it will successfully avail the one seeking to rely on it . The session was quite impactful. I cannot possibly present the entire teachings here for want of space. Recall that you can watch the training on YouTube. Just search for it. It's there. The training continues on 22nd August 2023 (Tuesday next week, Day 3). Include the date on your calender. Thanks to Mr. Tobenna Erojikwe (Chairman, NBA Institute of Continuing Legal Education) and the entire NBA-ICLE team for precious gift packed in the trainings. #NBA #NBA-ICLE #TOBENNAEROJIKWE
