4Racing Global Horseracing News Round Up – 19 May 2023 Irish Wins for South African Jockey In the midst of a challenging winter, local outlet Turftalk reports the positive news that South African jockey Mpumelelo Mjoka is notching up impressive wins in Ireland. After moving to the Emerald Isle to pursue racing opportunities, Mjoka says he has learnt a lot due to the “quite different racing”. He has now emerged victorious on the Kevin Thomas Coleman-trained Excelebration mare Red Vermillion in a 19 runner handicap over one mile and five furlongs at Navan. The SA-born jockey also won a race in France when selected to represent South Africa in a Longines Future Racing Stars event. Mjoka had 83 winners in SA. The news follows the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) recent approval of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority’s (HISA) Anti-Doping and Medication Control (ADMC) Program. Equus Magazines notes that this means for the first time in the sport’s US history, the majority of racetracks that operate thoroughbred horse races there will now adhere to uniform testing and enforcement standards developed to strengthen equine welfare and enhance fairness. Run over 1m2f, the race used to be the richest horse race in the world between 1996 and 2020, until the Saudi Cup was created. 3. THE EVEREST (A$15m) An Australian race that carries a purse of $15m. Run over just 6f it’s a race that attracts some of the fastest horses in the world and is staged at the Royal Randwick racecourse in Sydney in mid-October. 💥 There's no better time to get involved in racehorse ownership💥 Today, Racing NSW revealed increases to minimum prizemoney levels for Metropolitan and Provincial racing worth more than $6.5 million annually! 🙌 Starting from August 1, 2023, the prize money increases will be as follows: ⏺ The minimum prize money for Metropolitan Saturday races will rise to $160,000 per race, up from $150,000. ⏺ Metropolitan public holiday race meetings will see an increase of $5,000 per race, bringing the minimum prize money to $65,000. Additionally, there will be a feature race with prize money of $150,000. ⏺ Metropolitan midweek races will have a $5,000 per race increase, making the minimum prize money $60,000. ⏺ Provincial races will also experience an increase, with the minimum prize money rising to $42,000 per race from $40,000 per race starting from August 1, 2023. This will result in an annual addition of nearly $2 million to Provincial prize money.
