“There are thousands of open positions in manufacturing and millions of students across the U.S. from under-resourced backgrounds who are not exposed to the plethora of careers in this space,” said founder and CEO of The Diversity Org, Joshua Pierce. The future leaders of manufacturing may not be getting the exposure they need to trades in the industry, however several organizations like Community College of Denver's Advanced Manufacturing Center, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, and Informa Markets are looking to change that. 😏 Read more in the comments from Manufacturing Dive and take action! ⤵ #manufacturing #laborshortage #futureofmanufacturing #skilledtrades

As the year 2023 ends, we are excited about a new team leading the charge of an initiative that will have an extraordinary impact on our Central Texas students and economy. We are thrilled to see the automated manufacturing drive being led by the Tiger Team. The Tiger Team is a task force of industry, education, and community leaders ready to revitalize the student-to-workforce pipeline. E3 Alliance formed this team after data revealed our education system needed to better prepare for the tremendous, advanced manufacturing job opportunities awaiting our Central Texas students. With our Tiger Team leading this workforce initiative, we aim to build a pipeline of 10,000 students preparing for advanced manufacturing jobs expected over the next five years with students and adults from our schools and our region. According to the Austin Regional Manufacturers Association (ARMA), companies in the Greater Austin area must fill at least 20,000 new jobs in advanced manufacturing in the next five years. Today is Manufacturing Day. It started 11 years ago to bring awareness to our hidden industry and ensure the perceptions and awareness of career pathways was an image reflective of today and tomorrow’s reality. At that time, manufacturing, along with IT and healthcare, was struggling with an adequate pipeline of talent. Here it is in 2023, and I was flying home last night to the message from my daughter’s middle school apologizing for a delay getting the kids home due to a driver shortage. The people shortage is no longer just healthcare, IT and manufacturing – it is arguably every sector. This has an increased impact on our industry. Despite the great work thousands have done since 2012, the importance of opening your doors to young people or sparking interest in your community or school has never been greater. Thank you for all you have done — and continue to do — to bring manufacturing top-of-mind with the next generation of talent. And if you are looking for a little inspiration this October, SME has a whole line up of events to help you celebrate modern manufacturing and inspire that next generation of manufacturers. https://lnkd.in/gf6u2T_d

3x Boy Dad | Career Coach | Student Success, Program Management | I help people build genuine relationships to make job hunts less painful and careers more joyful
Last week we got to welcome this awesome group of high school students to campus for our inaugural Supply Chain Summer Camp (I'll add a link in the comments). This is a photo of us at one of our corporate partners, Axle Logistics (thanks for hosting, friends! They loved it!). I get reminders all the time of why I made the jump from corporate to higher ed. But last week gave me some fantastic new memories. It was a blast building snarky relationships with the kids, for sure. But the most impactful part for me, which I categorize as a major personal win, was hearing one of them say that after this week she felt more clarity and confidence in the path she wants to be on the next few years - and that it was due to having met and talked with me at the camp. 🥹 Those interactions are literally why I'm here. Really cool for us to be able to extend those conversations to high school students for a short time - especially from underrepresented groups who need and deserve more support and opportunities than they often get! Very grateful to the Global Supply Chain Institute at the University of Tennessee, our SCM department, and the Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee (especially our friends in the Office of Diversity and Community Relations like LaKietha Jackson, M.A.,Ed) for investing in programs like this. #govols #scm #supplychain #DEI #careerdevelopment

𝗨𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆: 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 Shop Environments Should Not Be a Surprise to Female Students One of my colleagues who has both a PhD and is a Master Automobile Technician told me a shocking story over lunch at last October’s National Science Foundation Advanced Technology Education conference. I’m just going to say it. He worked in a shop in Pennsylvania two years ago … that had a 𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘱. Yes you read that correctly. A urinal in the open shop. It’s so unfair. Disgusting. Unheard of! (Except, sadly, we know it isn’t unheard of.) He said the parts runner was a female. Can you imagine being her? Putting it mildly, she didn’t want to have anything to do with the shop. I have worked with numerous schools that have told me that the shop environment in the automotive industry is still “bad”, “very bad” for women. That’s why, whenever I work with an Automotive program, I customize the WomenTech Retention Plan to include a 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲.. I also created training for Industry Advisory Council members and other Automotive employers about fair hiring practices, and fair workplaces. I ask them to take a fairness pledge. We can’t expect female students to have to navigate – and change – toxic workplaces on their own, without support from the schools that educate them and their industry partners. I can help you help support your female students in work-based learning activities and job placement in the automotive industry. Let's change this together. Let's get started during Women’s History Month. #AutoTech #AutomotiveInstructors #AutomotiveIndustry #FutureOfAuto #CommunityCollege #CareerReady #VocationalTraining #ProfessionalDevelopment #CTE #JobPlacement
