A cofferdam is an effective engineering solution used in marine construction to create a dry working area for excavation activities. Let's discuss circular cofferdam in more detail:
Sheet Piles: Sheet piles are the primary structural components of a circular cofferdam. They are steel or concrete panels that are driven into the sea floor to form a circular ring. These sheet piles are interlocked tightly to create a watertight seal, preventing water from entering the enclosed area.
Watertight Seal: To achieve a watertight seal, sheet piles are designed with interlocking mechanisms such as tongue and groove, ball-and-socket, or overlapping edges. The interlocks ensure a secure connection between adjacent sheet piles, maintaining the integrity of the cofferdam and preventing water ingress.
Excavation: Once the cofferdam is in place, the enclosed area is pumped out to remove water and create a dry working environment. Various pumps and dewatering systems are used to drain the water from the enclosed space efficiently.
Excavation Progression: The excavation work begins after the cofferdam is dewatered. Typically, dredging equipment or excavation tools are used to remove the material from the bottom of the enclosed area. As the excavation progresses, the depth of the enclosed area is increased gradually until the desired depth is reached.
Shaft Construction: The excavation process in the circular cofferdam creates a shaft with the desired depth. This shaft can be utilized for various purposes such as installing pipelines, cables, or foundations for structures. The dry working environment within the cofferdam facilitates these construction activities.
Cofferdam Removal: Once the construction work is completed, the circular cofferdam is removed. The removal process involves pulling out the sheet piles from the sea floor. Specialized equipment, such as pile extractors or vibratory hammers, is used to extract the sheet piles without causing damage to the surrounding environment.
Site Restoration: After the cofferdam is removed, the sea floor is restored to its original condition. This may involve backfilling the excavated area with appropriate material or disposing of the excavated material responsibly, depending on the project requirements and environmental considerations.
