The momentum continues! In early 2023, San Diego Gas & Electric's COO and Chief Safety Officer Kevin Geraghty challenged our supply management and community engagement teams to find new and creative ways to engage our construction and trades contractors in workforce development efforts. We know that a career in utility construction and line work can change a family and a generation - while helping energy companies build the grid of tomorrow. We spent 2023 working with a number of contractors to think about how they could leave a lasting impact by investing in historically overlooked communities. We also enhanced procurement's engagement and scoring criteria to elevate those contractors who are lifting up communities of concern. Our assumption was that making this work voluntary (and not required), would incentivize the creative power of our contractor community - and we were not wrong! Last week, we had the chance to hear about the impressive wins our contractors have had. After impactful kickoffs from Kevin and Jennifer Jett, we heard about incredible community building work happening at AM Ortega from Maurice Ortega and Val Cromwell, inspiring workforce training efforts at Cordoba Corporation from Jacqueline Reynoso, about San Diego's Competitive Edge Program from Brianna Birdwell and Marcos Valdez of EID Solutions and about Quanta West, LLC's incredible workforce efforts with marginalized communities and Veterans from Andee (Adriann) McCoy, Aljanae' Beamon and David Ball. Responsible and inclusive procurement means more than a (strong and proud) number on a piece of paper. It means building communities, leaving a lasting impact and making sure EVERYONE can play a part in the energy future of tomorrow. Big thanks to Mateo Quiroga, CPSM, Carrie Brennan, CPSM, Laura Frazee, Jennifer Blommaert, MBA and Kyle Van Grol for their planning efforts to make this event so special.
