The photographer did their job from a technical standpoint, but the connection I needed to feel good in photos was missing. I didnโt feel seen or understood at all, nor did I feel like I looked like me. Drawing from that negative experience helped me curate human-focused experiences centered around connection and inclusivity as a photographer. These pillars have continued to be integral to my business as itโs expanded to include coaching and consulting. This is why itโs so magical when I get to support clients with their foundational brand messaging, client experiences, and brand photos. Today, I want to share a story that demonstrates how an organization, in this case, LEGO, turned a mistake into a remarkable market win through strategic PR and corporate communications. ๐งฑ The "LEGO Crisis" ๐งฑ Back in the early 2000s, LEGO was facing a crisis. Hard to imagine considering we as parents have contributed so much to the company's sales thanks to our zealous kid. But their sales were plummeting, and fast. They were on the brink of bankruptcy thanks to a series of strategic missteps and a deviation from their core products. Video games, clothing, and even theme parks- LEGO had diversified. Unfortunately, these ventures were not as successful as the iconic plastic bricks. They were bleeding money and losing their identity. ๐จ The Turning Point ๐จ LEGO's leadership embraced transparency. They admitted their mistakes, acknowledged that they had drifted from their core mission of creative play, and reiterated that they were ready to rebuild. They launched a massive restructuring plan and communicated their commitment to refocusing on their core product: the bricks. ๐ The Results? ๐ 1. Revival of Core Values: LEGO's return to its core product aligned with their values of imagination, creativity, and learning through play. 2. Effective Communication: They effectively communicated their new strategy through marketing campaigns, showcasing their dedication to quality and creativity. 3. Customer Loyalty: LEGO fans and parents appreciated the company's transparency and commitment to their mission. Sales and loyalty soared. ๐ช Market Wins ๐ช LEGO not only survived but thrived. They expanded their market presence and introduced innovative sets, partnerships (like the LEGO Star Wars series), and digital experiences.
