We have our first update in a few weeks on the east coast labor negotiation from Peter Tirschwell.
As I have mentioned a few times, this is the major event on the horizon that could cause significant issues nationwide with both imports and exports. Some diversions to the west coast are already being seen, but not many the article notes. Opinions, while still mixed, are becoming more optimistic as we inch closer to the deadline at the end of September.
"Some large BCOs tell the Journal of Commerce that based on the lengthy East Coast track record of labor peace, they have faith a deal will get done without disruption, eliminating the need to divert cargo as a precautionary measure. "
The next couple of months will be critical, and shippers will have to start making decisions on whether to play it safe and start diverting cargo for orders coming later this summer or risk the potential of a strike and getting caught up in delays and backlogs on the east coast.
