Hey lovelies the ACCC's 2023 targeting Scams report has just dropped. Australians lost a whooping $2.7 billion to scams in 2023 which is down from $3.1 billion in 2022. However it is still almost $1 billion higher than two years ago and still too high a loss. The decrease from 2022 to 2023 could be thanks to the banks being more aggressive with their scam fighting as well as projects by the ACCC's National Anti-Scam centre, ASIC and Telco's. It is always hard to know when multiple changes are made what has made the real difference. I take these statistics with a grain of salt because research has shown that most victims of scams do not report they have been scammed for a number of reasons shame being a main one. These numbers are therefore at the low end of how much Australians have truly lost to scams. Any decrease is great news and I'm honestly happy to see it however $2.7 billion on the low end is still way too high. Behind that huge number are flesh and blood humans who are losing their life savings and who are being completely devastated emotionally and financially. To probably no ones surprise investment scam losses were the biggest losses out of that pie coming in at a whooping $1.3 billion dollars out of the $2.7 billion lost. The loss from investment scams is more than the other scam loss categories combined. This is one of the reasons I'm passionate about investment scams and raising awareness around them. People especially elderly people are losing their life savings to them. They are devastating millions of people globally and heavily affecting society as a whole. There are a number of projects in the works by the Government, National Anti-Scam Centre, Banks, Telco's and Digital platforms that will hopefully keep the scam losses dropping each year. These projects are detailed in the report which I have linked to in the comments. There is a lot of work still to be done and we have to be consistent with our scam fighting initiatives as scammers are very good at evolving and looking for other ways to get what they want. I look forward to seeing that horrific scam loss number decreasing each year. We will never totally get rid of scammers and losses for as long as humans exist but I believe we can definitely minimise the losses and lower human suffering and societal impacts. I'm passionate about men's mental health and wellbeing. In this weeks non scam awareness related post I want to highlight my love of men focused groups like WNOW - When No One's Watching that is highlighted in below ABC video clip and others like #ANDYSMANCLUB a UK based peer to peer support group for men. The numbers are heartbreaking. Male suicide is a major crisis worldwide. Many are struggling mentally and a number of them are lashing out privately and publicly. There are amazing groups like the two I just mentioned above and many more that are truly making a difference and saving lives. For the lovely gents please reach out to any local groups in your area if you need it. Remember its ok to talk and vulnerability is not weakness its brave. Great podcast interview of Erin West by Adam Levin for What the Hack podcast. In this episode Erin talks about her tenacious fight against pig butchering scams and the organised crime rings behind them. Pig butchering scams are named after the practice of farmers fattening pigs for slaughter. Scammers take some time to develop a relationship with the potential victim so they build trust and only after the person trusts the scammer as a romantic partner or as a friend do they introduce some great investment opportunity which is usually crypto related although not always. This is hilarious Jorij Abraham absolute gold 🤣🤣🤣 The scammer did not realise they were literally talking to one of the biggest scam fighters in the world, well they quickly learnt 😂 Lovelies below is a good example of how scammers start unsolicited conversations with you. Have a zero policy against these unsolicited conversations and block them. I personally no longer answer calls from numbers not saved in my phone or that I dont know. If its important they will leave a voicemail. Even for the numbers I know because some scammers have become sophisticated enough to clone numbers I do not do anything I find questionable if asked. I get off that phone call and directly call the organisation using their publicly available number. Also please be aware that some scammers now use sms threading where they insert their sms in a current legitimate thread for example with your bank. Even if its in a sms thread with a company you deal with if a sms seems off and is asking for personal or financial info or asking you to click a link dont do it. Get off the sms and contact the organisation directly using their publicly available number. Hey lovelies a lot of horrific events have been happening locally and around the world and it can feel overwhelming, unsafe, unpredictable and scary even if you did not personally experience the events. It sure feels like that for me sometimes especially in the past 6 months since my dad was killed. I'm always intentional about trying to process such events in the healthiest way possible. I would NEVER fall for a scam! I'm too SMART to fall for that! How could they fall for such an OBVIOUS scam? I work in FINANCE and can see the red flags a mile away. If you have ever caught yourself saying or thinking above THINK again. Anyone can be scammed. As long as you are human and have needs and emotions that scammers can manipulate and take advantage off you can be scammed. Please listen to the very brave Carina Peritore a neuroscientist and triathlete who shares her story regarding losing her money in a pig butchering scam with Adam Levin in his What the Hack podcast. One thing I'm very passionate about is teaching our kids about scams and online safety in general. There are too many heartbreaking stories of young people being scammed and extorted online with too many taking their own lives because of it. We as a society do not do enough to educate children about being safe online especially in this day in age where they spend so much time online. I love the work that Ayelet Biger-Levin is doing in the US going to schools and raising awareness regarding things children need to the aware off regarding online safety and scams. She is doing much needed work in this space. Below she talks about how to talk so kids will listen and how to listen so kids will talk. She also mentions the 3 important concepts to talk to kids of all ages about. If you are a parent, guardian or educator please have a look at the great tips Ayelet shares in below post and please share with your network. I'm looking into ways I can educate kids regarding scams and online safety in my local area. Watch this space. If you have any suggestions and tips regarding how I can do this please reach out.
