Greece’s parliament recently approved a new law that aimed at issuing residence and work permits for undocumented migrants, especially for agricultural workers. According to Schengen visa reports, around 30,000 migrants are expected to receive residence and work permits.

The new law implemented by the Greek parliament benefits migrants, particularly from Albania, Georgia, and the Philippines. It grants them a three-year residence permit tied with their job offer. This law was issued to protect workers from abuse by establishing legal status. The rules of the new law apply to migrants who are residing in Greece without residence and work permits for at least three years until the end of November.

Benefits of New Law

According to the Greek Migration Ministry report, there has been a decrease in the number of illegal arrivals in Greece. The number decreased by 4,584 in November, down from 6,863 in October, and dropped by 40% from September. Many individuals migrate from neighboring countries like Turkey to Greece’s eastern Aegean islands on small boats. There has been a significant reduction in the number of people coming to Greece, nearly one million arrived in 2015, and this year 45,000 people arrived.
