Northwestern Air BAe 32 Crash in N.W.T., Canada
On January 23, 2024, a Northwestern Air Lease Ltd BAe Jetstream 32 crashed shortly after takeoff, approximately 500 meters west of Fort Smith Airport (YSM/CYSM) in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, Canada. The crash resulted in at least 5 fatalities among the 11 occupants, with the aircraft being completely destroyed. The flight, carrying passengers, had departed from Fort Smith Airport, heading towards Yellowknife Airport, NT (YZF/CYZF). The cause of the crash is under investigation, and emergency services, including a Royal Canadian Air Force C-130 Hercules, responded to the site. BC Heli-Skiing Helicopter Crash Results in Fatalities and Injuries
On January 22, 2024, a Skyline Helicopters AgustaWestland AW119 MkII Koala, operated by Northern Escape Heli-Skiing, crashed in the Skeena Mountains, north of Terrace, British Columbia, causing three deaths and leaving four in critical condition. The aircraft, manufactured in 2006 with MSN 14511, was completely destroyed in the incident. The Transportation Safety Board, RCMP, WorkSafeBC, and the B.C. EASA Releases 2024 European Plan for Aviation Safety
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has released the 2024 edition of the European Plan for Aviation Safety (EPAS), marking its 13th edition and underscoring EASA's commitment to aviation safety in Europe. This comprehensive plan, integral to the European Commission's strategic vision for aviation safety, details strategic priorities, primary safety risks, environmental protection measures, and actions needed within the European aviation safety system. The 2024 edition, updated following a new three-year revision cycle, features 164 actions, including 19 new ones, aligning with the 2023-2025 strategic priorities and addresses key areas such as erroneous take-off parameters, Artificial Intelligence Trustworthiness, and integration of Higher Airspace Operations.
