Editor’s Note: With a heritage as long and storied as Smithville’s, it would impossible to encapsulate all of its history within these few pages. The following are highlights of the city’s founding and transformation through the years. The following is a collection of personal accounts from longtime residents, newspaper archives and historical society information. It is not presented in chronological order, but in a way that showcases many important aspects of the city’s history.

SMITHVILLE — While the city has seen many changes as the result of population growth, business development and lots and lots of flooding, one thing has remained constant in Smithville: a sense of community. From its earliest days, the city has forged ahead through hard-working residents with an entrepreneurial spirit and strong ties to the land.
