Napoli slaps ridiculous price on Gonzalo Higuain amid reports of interest abroad

Higuain

With Napoli forward Gonzalo Higuain linked to clubs such as Arsenal, Liverpool, and AC Milan, Napoli has responded strongly by making his release clause public.

In a move often frowned upon by clubs, Napoli released a statement to a local radio station that made his contract clause public, and it’s a ridiculous price, as release clauses often are.

“Napoli are keen to clarify certain articles, published in some newspapers, about the departure of Higuain,” the statement to Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli read. “The official clarification from Napoli is the following: there is a clause in Gonzalo Higuain’s contract. The clause is €94,736,000. There have been no bids. Anyone who wants the player will have to pay the club that amount.”

With only the rarest of transfers topping $100 million, Higuain’s $106 million release clause seems just a tad out of reach for any club wishing to have a go. There will surely be those who try to talk Napoli off their pedestal, but at the moment, they seem to be holding their ground.

In two seasons at Stadio San Paolo, Higuain has bagged 35 goals in 69 Serie A appearances and assisted 14 more. His current contract runs through the summer of 2018, having signed a five-year deal two seasons ago while moving to Napoli from Real Madrid for around $33 million.

Currently on duty with Argentina in the Copa America, he has made two appearances - one a start - and scored the winner against Jamaica in Argentina’s final group stage game.
