Face of Overlooked Shelter Dog Still Searching for a Home After 624 Days

A playful and friendly shepherd mix is still patiently waiting to find his perfect forever home. After 624 days, Eddie has still had no interest from potential adopters—despite a charming personality and loving nature.

Found as a stray wandering the streets, 4-year-old Eddie was taken in by Perfectly Imperfect Pups (PIPs) in North Carolina when a good Samaritan brought him to a vet after witnessing him seemingly in trouble.

"He was taken into a vet where he had a couple of seizures," a spokesperson for PIPs told Newsweek. "We are an all-foster-based rescue, so we do not have a physical location—his amazing foster has been taking care of him since."

It was discovered that 112-pound Eddie has a seizure disorder, but it is thankfully now well controlled with medication. He hasn't had a seizure for over six months. Eddie is neutered, up to date on all shots and medications, and fully housebroken, but there has still been no interest in giving him a forever home.

Each year, 6.3 million pets enter U.S. shelters, which is an average of 17,260 a day, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The number of dogs and cats taken in by pet shelters hit 46,807 during January 2023, an increase of 1,744 compared with January 2022, the 24Pet 'Shelter Watch Report' found.

Around 920,000 surrendered animals are euthanized every year. Shelters are striving to minimize euthanasia rates by promoting adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavior rehabilitation.

"Eddie is a typical shepherd mix. He enjoys his people and other dogs," said the PIPs spokesperson. "He is in a house with other dogs and gets along great, [though] he isn't a large fan of cats. He also loves a good game of fetch. He will play endlessly if you let him."

Eddie's ideal home would be with someone familiar with the shepherd breed, patient, and understanding of his medical condition.

His seizures are managed, but potential adopters should be prepared to provide him with the care and attention he needs. The rescue spokesperson describes Eddie as a "sweet boy with a big bark," and said that he thrives in an environment where he is kept engaged and active.

"He deserves the best. We'd love to see him with his people in a house with space for ball-throwing and running around," the rescue spokesperson said. "He is truly one of a kind and deserves all the best."
