Video: Nino Schurter VS Mike Levy - Humbled

Nov 25, 2019
by Pinkbike Originals

Eight World Championship titles. Seven World Cup overall titles. Bronze, silver, and gold Olympic medals. Four National Championships. He has thirty-two World Cup wins. Thirty-two! And in 2017, he put together the perfect season, winning every World Cup race and the World Champs. Nino Schurter, as well as his longtime rival Julian Absalon, is considered by many to be cross-country racing's GOAT. It certainly doesn't hurt that the Swissman does all the winning while also getting a bit sideways whenever he has the chance; meanwhile, much of his competition look scared stiff of what their bike is about to do to them.

Nino? He usually looks like he's just out there having some fun.

Nino Schurter
Nino Schurter

Lugano isn't where Schurter calls home, but he spends plenty of time in the area's surrounding mountains for the quality singletrack and consistent weather. The view ain't too shabby, either, it turns out, not that I'd be seeing much of that while choking on my tongue and breathing through my eyeballs. I was there to do some intervals with Nino, although that's probably a bit of a misleading way to describe it, and to see if the GOAT could learn a thing or three from me on the bike. Also not true.

Humbled #1 - Brendan Fairclough VS Mike Levy at Whistler
Humbled #2 - Richie Rude VS Mike Levy in the Gym
Humbled #3 - Gee Atherton VS Mike Levy at Crankworx

Good thing we didn't give you a Downcountry bike, Mike.

came here to see Nino absolutely crushing it on the descent with an extended seatpost, leaving Mike in the dust. Disappointed to only see some boring intervals (of course he beats him by a big marging there)
  • 5 1
@gooutsidetoday: nah. Nino is fast but I dont think the tip 3 would lose any sleep. Wink

Put N1no and Levy on the WH lawn and finally do the field test everybody is waiting for.

I think he'd surprise some people. He's remarkably quick on the downhills, and always sideways and laughing. I'd predict a low-4 minute time.
  • 2 0
To my knowledge,Nino only has raced one EWS,Finale a few years back. IIRC,he crashed out.

In 2013 after Rampage Schurter rode from the Rampage site, up onto the mesa, across, then down and over to Spingfield. 22 miles. In the middle of the ride he KOM'd (at the time) the rocky -13% grade Grafton Mesa descent. Currently on that Strava segment he's tied with Jesse Malemed. Probably all on his XC or maybe a trail bike. I don't care much about XC racing but this is one of my favorite bike facts.

 Freaking heck. Never knew this.
  • 9 0
He's a monster on the descents. And constantly having fun.
  • 97 7
I'd guess that Levy has well above average fitness and skill levels, so this just gives more perspective to how insane Nino's fitness and skills are.
  • 65 9
I agree with the latter but I’m not sure about the former.
  • 67 2
he definitely does, he finished ~35/600 or something at the BCBR one year with a stacked field of pro xc dudes.

Maybe PB can do a "reviewer FTP test" video to prove me right. Then ya'll can bow to the master.
  • 26 8
@samimerilohi: I would’ve thought the 32 World Cup wins, Olympic gold, silver and bronze, 8 World Championships and 7 WC overall titles are a better measure of his fitness and skill than climbing a hill quicker than Levy.

Reminds me of the guy who 'needs' a SB150, then gets passed by a Surly hardtail.
  • 18 0
@Scottybike36: I think you're missing the point. Of course Schurter is fast, as proven by his success. But watching him race 100 other very fast guys doesn't really show how much faster than the average rider he is.
  • 9 0
@SvenNorske: And complains the SB150 isn't enough bike to take a small downhill section. And the hardtail goes down no problem. I think the "on this bike??" comment got me the most

@samimerilohi: No not really. I completely get your point. You’re saying that winning World Cup races 2 minutes ahead of 100 very fast guys leaves plenty of onlookers and viewers somewhat ambivalent. You’re saying doing that cannot in any way show that he is insanely fast. Only when he rides with a much slower rider and he leaves them for dust it becomes clear that he is really fast. Your logic is sound. Impressive.
  • 3 0
@SvenNorske: you got a link for that? Would love to see it.
  • 17 0
@Scottybike36: No, I'm not saying any of that. You made all of that up on your own.

Not in great shape right now, and we were at 5,600ft, which didn't help my cause. TBH, I was dying. When I'm fit, my FTP is 300 and I weigh 150lb, which is respectable but the outcome wouldn't have been any different if I had been in shape Smile

You don't feel any difference in oxygen level at such a low altitude. C'mon it is not the everest and it is closer to the sea level than say Mexico city or Bogotá.
  • 3 0
@opignonlibre: 5600' is not a low altitude and you would definitely feel a +20% reduction in oxygen. I can feel it when I leave 4500' and head down to sea level.

@toni796: I remember seeing some random fact from Jan Ulrich on Amstel in one of the Spring Classics and he sustained a 2hour long 400watt+ breakaway and won. That was eye-opening

@toni796: At the Rio Olympics Fbain Cancellara averaged 435watts for the entire time trial, 540+ on the climbs. I doubt they pull those number on grand tour climbs too, but still more than 400watts for an hour and a bit is insane. I wonder if he ever gets flashbacks to the pain in his thighs.
  • 6 2
@leelau: The eye catching bit in those numbers is the 160bpm, not suspicious at all...

@leelau: @leelau: Pretty sure Jan Ullrich never won Amstel Gold...
He was consistently fat over the winter and usually just got to race weight for the Tour.
Also sure on a level palying field, LA doesn't win that many Tours. Jan was an insane talent, just not as good at cheating as Lance.

@toni796: Contador released some of his power data last year from one of his tour winning seasons... over 400 watts for an hour, over 450 watts for 20 minutes... at under 62kg, for a bonkers > 7 w/kg ftp.

I still get more impressed withBMX racers... all the skills and power of Olympic track cyclists. Chances are, for amateur use of someone who pedals only to get to the trail head and focuses on downs, you are better off doing lifts then sprints and intervals like BMXers to make every movement count more, rather than get best average pace of a roadie to shine on fireroad climb. Who remembers those? Rode Enduro with elite BMX racer and I wish everyone to have a similar experience. When there are no more than 3-4 pedal strokes to make between corners and features and bloke gains serious distance after every such effort you start believing in peak power over steady pace.
  • 9 0
surprised it's only 420W @68kg. Maybe he's being a little cagey with the numbers, or is saving himself for a real workout. At 71kg only a little heavier, on a good day, even I can survive that interval. Velonews has done some analysis that really shows the incredible capabilities of top level cyclists. Sepp Kuss holding almost 400W for 20min @ 64kg in repeated efforts, Quinn Simmons 506W for 6min @72kg to win Junior World Championships.

They’re at a full sprint before they even hit the ground as they fly over moto jumps on a kids bike surrounded by dudes in PJ’s doing the same thing and if you crash someone lands on your head and they die as well.

Go good is Nino? It took the best (probably) single day road rider in the world to beat him. Nino may not have the highest numbers but he defines efficiency. The guy is line perfect and has the most measured output I’ve ever seen a mountain biker have. Not a watt wasted.
  • 1 0

@bwcyyc: lots of mtbers will do 420 for an hour...wait watt are we talking about?

  • 6 0
@bwcyyc: Pffft... whatever... I can do 420 all day. Smile
  • 5 1
@jclnv: Actually he is far from being the most efficient rider. He's pretty bulky, not that aerodynamic, he moves a lot on the bike and he's all about instant power (unfortunately for him, not enough to beat VDP or even Gaze on good days).
His numbers are weirdly not that impressive (for a pro, don't throw stones at me...). On Amstel, VDP pulled more than 700W on some segments (1 min effort after 150 km of heavy duty...), and managed to produce 1400W on a massive sprint after 10km full throttle alone (no one in front of to drag him, pretty much), and after 250 km at 350W average. That's what I call insane.
To me, Schurters' numbers tend to demonstrate that he is only made for mountain biking, and nothing else. He would also be destroyed in cyclocross I think. Eli Iserbyt would kick his ass (IMO).
  • 3 0

What is this nonsense? Talking about watts and average pedal power etc on pinkbike? Someone people here really need to binge drop in tv and reconnect with their inner chain wallet. This Is not the time or place to be talking about watts and EPO and all the crap that goes with it. Wink
  • 2 1
@opignonlibre: 350W for 6hours ? It is not above threshold....
But anyway, even if 1400W and 700W are obviously above, not all riders can reach those numbers, especially after 250km. Schurter can't (he tried on Tour de Romandie, but he was far from the best).
  • 1 0
@racerfacer: Agree. Think there might be some sandbagging to confuse the competition here.
  • 3 0
@RoadRunner13: Garbage. How do you explain his success then? I know what I’m looking at, the guy is technical perfection.

MvdP is a phenomenal rider but Alaphillipe would play with him on any steep extended climb. That’s why MvdP didn’t race Koppenberg this year after dying last year. Masses of watts but not the W/KG of the top cross guys, let alone the road field.

You want once in a generation talent? Evenepoel is on a different planet to anyone, ever. In a couple of years he’ll rewrite the rule book of what one rider is capable of.
  • 1 1
@jclnv: apart from real climbing, I think VDP is the perfect cyclist, capable on every terrain (he's not that bad on time trial). Yes some guys can beat him on some stages/races, but overall, he impresses me far more than Schurter, Alaphilippe or Bruni (I'm saying that, and I'm french...).
  • 2 1
@RoadRunner13: He’s too heavy. You’ve only seen him do a few select races. Wait till you see him jettisoned time after time in mountain stages in the Tour in 2021. The hype will fade then and you’ll realise how good Alaphillipe is that he can mix it in the mountains and the Ardennes.

However, by that time Evenepoel will be dropping the bunch whenever he feels like it.
  • 1 4
@RoadRunner13: really? What are roadies then? Half of the pros still hasn’t reconciled with the arrival of disc brakes, geometries are from 1970s at best and they all ride what looks like kids bikes. They could easily up the wheelbase, slacken the head angle, steepen the seat angle, especially for mountain races/stages, up the wheelsize to get the outer diameter of a 29” mtb wheel, but no... graphene in tires, electronic shifting and race for fiber modulus going from mega high to hyper giga aeroclass monocoque with vibration damping.
  • 8 0
@WAKIdesigns: Are we suddenly riding more technical roads or steeper roads? Road geometry is not under the same pressures to adapt.
I don't think the same ideas apply. There are practical reasons pro road racing has been slow to adopt certain mountain bike tech. I have a friend who does neutral service for pro racers...any idea what a headache disks are for them??
"Shut up Donnie - you're out of your element here"

@jclnv: ya never know...Indurain was a big guy. Sean Kelly and Jalabert started as sprinters and eventually each won a grand tour. But you're probably right...

  • 1 1
@jclnv: If they won the GC, then the answer is good enough, no?
In the 5 years Big Mig dominated the tour, mostly by destroying the TT, he never cracked to the point of him worrying.
  • 2 1
@ReformedRoadie: Look into how EPO effects performance. It is far more advantageous for high power guys climbing.
  • 2 1
@jclnv: that's why Pantani did cocaine...
Under Rick Jame's advice.
  • 2 0
@jclnv: please go into the details, with ReformedRoadie there's still somebody on the internet who's been living under a rock for the past 20 years.
  • 3 0
@RoadRunner13: MvDP is 6 inches taller and nearly 30 pounds heavier... of course his raw power numbers are higher. He's also nine years younger.

It's cool to be a fan but just spouting off admit numbers, out of context, is stupid. When it comes to watts/kg, they really aren't separated by much. And Nino has never tried to be anything but a mountain biker so of course, after 20+ years of training his body for that one discipline, he's only suited to mountain biking.
  • 1 0
@ReformedRoadie: Here’s the thing, Pantani may have just been exceptional.
  • 2 0
@jclnv: All of the world tour riders are exceptional. During that time period, almost all were taking EPO, as well as HGH, Testosterone, etc. Pot Belge was (is?) used that is a combo of coke, heroin, caffeine, amphetamines and analgesics... Clean riders were the exception, and none lasted long or got results.
Pantani was an incredible, complicated talent, who battled depression, which he often used drugs to combat (aside from the performance aspect). He maintains god status in Italy...He certainly was exciting to watch race.
  • 1 0
@ReformedRoadie: Pantani was just doped to the hilt, like the rest of them. Honestly, cycling has never been clean and likely never will be clean. Just enjoy the performances and learn not to ask too many questions. They really need to just drop the facade of clean racing and go back to the good old days of Bjarne Riis calling his shot and then dropping everybody.
  • 2 0
@ReformedRoadie: based on this thread, your name does not check out...
  • 1 4
@ReformedRoadie: if you go to a bike shop and see a road bike next to a 29” mountain bike it looks like a kids bike. No roads didn’t get harder, it doesn’t mean bikes couldn’t be better. Saying current road bike is fine to ride down Alpine Switchbacks at 90km/h is like asking everyone to send Dirt Merchant on BMXes. You can. Yes you can. Why do you think Gravel gets popular? Because people are finally taking fingers out of their arses. And how do “non Taliban” roadies and CXers react to Gravel?
  • 2 0
@WAKIdesigns: I kind of think the gravel trend is motivated by cyclists giving up on sharing the road with obnoxious (and sometimes texting and sometimes intoxicated) motorists. There's hardly any cars on gravel. Kind of reminds me a bit of my early mtb days back in the early 90's. I'd be interested to ride a road bike with some more progressive geometry just to see how it feels; however, not sure I'm a fan of steep seat tube angles on the road. I find it puts it puts me in a non-optimal pedaling position on my mtb and I have to move the saddle back as far as it will go.
  • 1 0
@WAKIdesigns: current road bikes are fine for alpine descents well over 90km/h... if you have trouble with that it, I suggest you try working on your nine handling skill instead of your tire size.

29" wheels are advantageous because they roll over obstacles well, there's no need for that on the road. That's why motorcycles aren't running the same diameter tires as trophy trucks.
  • 31 0
When watching Nino perfectly rip that descent, just remember that there was a time fifteen years ago or so when riders were rumoured to be sneaking onto courses at night to remove obstacles to make the trail easier and faster. XC has gone in such a good direction since then.

I'm under the impression that Levy's approach in these videos is a bit lighthearted on purpose...probably to highlight the differences between top pros and average riders. Regardless of fitness, his stance and technique on the climb section looked a bit too poor to be believable. For a person that tests bikes for a living I'm having difficulty buying that this is how he hangles steep climbs.
  • 2 0
It's lighthearted for sure, but that steep section was much steeper and looser than it looks on camera. That's always the case tho haha

Funny as F to watch him with Mike and those Donkeys were on Mikes side, you could just feel the empathy oozing from them.
  • 4 0
Great vid. Fun, and it shows how good the pros really are. There's a world of difference between gravity-oriented and xc mountain bikers, their idea of fun is totally different sometimes. there's an element of masochism in xc that is shared with road bikers. Levy has that too obviously because noone in their right mind would try to keep up with the rainbow jersey when he's doing intervals unless they secretly enjoy that taste of blood in the lungs.
But also nice to include the downhill bit. All these pros are excellent bike handlers, make no mistakes. People moan about the "easy" xc courses on here sometimes, but try going down them with black spots in your vision from oxygen debt after 50 mins of hard racing. Even on a big bike you may find that you cant keep up with a mid-pack xc pro in a situation like that.

This made Monday SO much better.

So that day, Levy was the grape smuggler. I'm putting my Pinkbike knowledge to good use!
  • 9 2
How many times did Levy say “Nino”?
  • 5 0
 94750
  • 7 0
I think that donkey was feeling sorry for Levy...
  • 7 1
Humbled video's are brilliant, puts into perspective how crap I really am ????????????
  • 2 0
 Good question!
  • 5 0
I love that Mike actually spun out on the spot Nino made harder for him, lol. Both of these guys are great sports, props from an armchair (while at work) rider Smile
  • 3 0
Big props to Levy for his effort in this. He gets a little light-hearted shade for doing these vids, but it seems like he’s having fun and I enjoy watching them. I would love to see how 90% of pink bike readers perform in any of the segments. You’d watch that red hot mess and gain a whole new appreciation for Mike’s riding skills and fitness.

@mikelevy Don't be a hero on those climbs! Flip the cheater switch!
  • 5 0
Nino must be so bored of these lol He smoked GMBN a couple months ago too
  • 7 1
I love these but am now doubting all of Mike's reviews on bikes. hmmmmm
  • 4 0
Eeesh, it's just a fun video. Also, that climb is much steeper than it looks. I'd bet 10 Timbits that the majority of riders wouldn't get halfway up it. As for the downs, I'm on a bike with a 100mm stem, 680mm handlebars that I've never ridden before. So yeah, I'm being careful riding it while I'm on the other side of the world. It was sketchy Wink
  • 1 0
@mikelevy: haha very true Mike- just giving you a hard time. Wink
  • 4 0
I bet Nino used the twinloc on that tarmac climb to lock his supension and Levy didn't, out of principle. And look at the result! Wink
  • 6 0
"It's not interval training, if you just do one!" LMAO!! Wink
  • 3 1
GoPro completely flattens everything out. That 'at altitude' trail, both up and down is way steeper than it appears. And of course the lack of O2. Nino is a heck of an athlete, not only for his pace but his technical skills are very high. That was a real steep chunky descent on a XC bike. BTW, Levy would dominate most of your asses.
  • 1 2
you don't really lack O2 at altitudes lower than 2500-3000m.
  • 2 0
I like and admire so much Nino Schurter, but isn`t he in a sort of ``zone of confort``now??? I`d really like to see him in the EWS competition. He`d both have the occasion to spit his lungs up hills and to show his downhill skills, no??? Get out of the sofa Nino, come to enduro troubles!!! Smile
  • 2 0
We still don't know how good Nino is on a bike, at least compared to the gravity set.
How steep was that descent? Because you can't tell on camera. Mike said that he knows some downhill riders that wouldn't ride that descent on an XC bike. Which is not surprising considering they don't ride XC bikes, and Nino does - for a profession.

More interesting would be seeing how Nino decends compared to say an EWS pro on say a Scott Ransom.

And even the climbs, how fit is Mike? Was it a big deal that Nino cleared the climb and Mike didn't? Mike doesn't sound that fit judging by the (over-amplified) breathing.

Don't get me wrong, I like Mike on camera though, he comes across well apart from way too much cussing.

OK Mike, I remember back in the old days when Mark and I used to be riding up Vedder and almost feel mocked for riding up Vedder rather than doing the truck run but I must say that your video definitely speaks to the importance of the need for balance between staying in shape for the uphill so that you can do justice to the downhill portion of mountain biking. When I used to race cross country, back in the day (I always won my races on the uphill, not the downhill portion.) My strategy was get ahead of everyone on the uphill because it is was very difficult to pass on the downhill portion. Your website continues to inspire everyone in the sport. Keep up the great work!

the big difference on the climbs between the two in my view is their pedalling: Nino just rolls those pedals over without a hint of hestitation, while Levy looks like he is pretty much spastic. no wonder those rocks gave him so much grief.
  • 2 0
Did anyone count the number of times Levy says "Nino" in that 10 minute video? I would count but I'm pretty sure its more than my fingers and toes. Not too many Mike's from Nino.
  • 6 2
Nino kicks EWS ass if only we could pay him enough.
  • 8 4
Was Mike trying to look like a complete noob on that climb? Dear lord.
  • 12 5
These are the guys telling you what bike to buy
  • 4 0
@JohanG: Like the majority of pinkbikers are much better though, lets be honest here.
  • 6 0
@JohanG: pretty sure it's steeper than it looks. And he probably pedaled up till there, not sure if he is used to pedaling in the steep above 7000 ft.
  • 6 0
@zede: Schurter looked to be in his 50T cog...even with his 38T front, it is clearly steeper than it looks.
  • 2 0
I did this exact climb on a hike. It is steep as f_ck!
  • 2 1
I thought he was looking more like a noob on the tech downhill, but I think he was just being overly dramatic for the video. Just the like on the 8-ball hot lap. He can ride better than that.
  • 5 0

  • 1 0
@mikelevy: well you could have at least set correct saddle height..
  • 1 0
@mikelevy: While I wouldn't wish to switch back to that width on my own bike we were perfectly fine riding 100mm stem and 680 wide handlebars 5y ago on the same trails.
  • 1 0
@mikelevy: mike -- just busting balls man, didn't mean to offend. Cheers!
  • 1 0
@GZMS: The saddle probably was set correctly. 80mm dropper is still pretty high.

If y’all haven’t seen the nino vs Marc Beaumont gmbn vid it’s worth a look
  • 1 0
Agreed, Marc even won a DH WC himself. Nino smashed him haha
  • 3 0
I AM BLOWN AWAY THAT MIKE DID NOT BLAME the less than 90 degree seat angle on the XC bike for his climbing woes.......
  • 3 0
I do enjoy these videos. Levy reminded me of newborn lamb trying to find it's legs.
  • 4 0
N1no is more downcountry than Mr. Downcountry...
  • 2 0
You guys need to watch some GoPro video footage and then go ride those same trails. Real life is different than video, I assure you.
  • 6 3
Should have sent him with an ebike so he could keep up.
  • 8 5
Even the pros look awkward descending on those bikes.
  • 3 0
Pretty sure Nino went up that hill faster than I'd ride down it!

one of the best humbled episodes.. nice one mike and nino

That video was highly entertaining and found myself laughing a lot! I know I would be in the exact same position as Mike!

 Where are the field tests
  • 22 0
They realized last year just how popular they were and are using that popularity to increase page views (during a typically slower time of year), by dragging it out and giving us the videos in drips and drabs. Makes sense from a business point of view. But I do think they're dragging it out a little bit too much.
  • 3 0
@islandforlife: yep. Though I agree with you that it's starting to stretch a bit too long. One category a week seems reasonable. Stretching them out over a month or more seems maybe just a bit excessive.

This is pretty good content though, so I can't really complain, even if @mikelevy plays up his own incompetence a bit much.
  • 2 0
Waiting for Bike Mag Bible of Bike Tests pretty much
  • 13 3
@islandforlife: of course we're releasing just Field Test video a day, we want each bike to stand on its own. We did the same thing last year...

BUT, the reason we're not running any for the next few days is so our editors can catch up. @jasonlucas had the audacity to take a vacation in Costa Rica. Smile

 @brianpark: booooooooo
  • 1 0
@brianpark: As I said, I totally get it... But you missed the Nov 14th, 15th, 22th & 25th, and the weekends :-) haha... guess it just feels like they came out faster last year? All in all, awesome content once again... and as you can see, has us all jones'n for more!!

Do a humbled where Levy goes tries to ride someone's Rampage line.

Mike Levy - You should have tried to score a drink from his water bottle!! Sounds like there´s still room for foul play in XC.. This foul play that is creeping into Enduro these last few seasons...

Do another video with MVDP and Nino. You could still call it humbled Wink

Steep descents on the XC bike is tough. The bars are super low and seat is super high. OTB just waiting to happen.
  • 9 3
yeah but way back when that's all you had and if you wanted to attempt something you did, even if it meant you had a 100mm stem, 110mm travel fork, steel hardtail and a tall seatpost, oh...and canti brakes. When he said "on this bike??" about taking the small descent it really made me cringe. Rider relying on technology rather than ability
  • 4 3
@GlassGuy: whenever you use a dropper post you rely on physics and common sense
  • 3 0
@GlassGuy: Trust me, I know old school bikes well. Started riding a totally rigid mtb bike in late 80s. Fixed seat, fully rigid with no suspension, cantilever brakes, dropped chains, chainsuck, terrible tires, losing water bottle every ride, etc. Bikes today are amazing machines.
  • 2 0
@tacklingdummy: Aye. But you try to tell that to young people of today. Would they believe you? No!
  • 1 0
@iamamodel: The ones that think they know it all, would tell me, "Ok Boomer", but I'm a GenX-er. Lol.
  • 1 0
Do any of you old men yelling at clouds still ride said old skool 'hardmen' bikes? Razz No? There's probably a reason...

strange headline there.

A little more about the equipment next time please

Not the GOAT. Overend and Tomac can battle for that one.
  • 7 7
Probably down voted by people not born when they were racing... They were riding down that shit with cantilevers and thumb shifters, full rigid. Supposedly, John is still faster going downhill than Eli is.
  • 1 0
John and Ned are absolute legends. We need to invent a time machine for Nino, and have 'em duke it out in a threeway!
  • 6 0
Juli Furtado won 28 WC XC races in her short lived six year career including 17 consecutive wins. World XC champ as a rookie and the only racer ever to win World Championships in XC and DH. It took Gunn Rita 16 years to reach 28 WC wins. Serious GOAT contender in my book.

Nino would be the fastest guy on an e-bike as well. Lol.
  • 3 5
Nino could win every WC DH race and every EWS race in the same season without blinking an eye. XC pros have no equal in MTB!
  • 1 2
I could keep up with that guy in the stripey jersey on an e-bike?
  • 1 2
 good time for an ebike!
