New electronic terminals are coming to Tokyo’s Haneda and Osaka’s Kansai International airports to drastically shorten immigration and customs clearance time.

As reported by Nikkei Asia, the new system will be implemented in fiscal year 2024 with the aim of getting entry time down to one minute.

Arrivals to Japan will need to enter their information, like passport details and any goods declarations, on the Visit Japan web page, at which point a QR code will be provided to use with the new electronic terminals which will handle both immigration and customs.

The new process, if successful, will make for a more comfortable visitor experience and minimise paperwork on the government side.

The number of foreign arrivals to Japan has recovered strongly since the lifting of Covid-era restrictions in October 2022, with last December being the busiest December ever for arrivals.

It is expected that, upon satisfactory results, the new system will expand to other international airports in Japan.
