CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – More than 55 cancellations and hundreds of delays were reported at Charlotte Douglas International Airport Monday, primarily due to heavy rain and storms in the area.
Security lines spanned nearly the entire building’s length at times; the estimated wait time was over an hour.
Exactly 578 flights were delayed, and 58 were canceled, according to FlightAware.
Delay times weren’t usually more than two hours; however, the biggest issue for travelers was making connecting flights to their final destinations.
“We are on our way out to Yellowstone, and we are supposed to be flying into Salt Lake City and then into Boseman later tonight,” said Julie Maldonado, a passenger. “We were supposed to be getting there around midnight tonight. But now we have a delay and apparently don’t have a connecting flight.”
Jason Kobishop and his family are stranded in Charlotte after their connection was rescheduled to Tuesday. Though the weather was the issue Monday, Kobishop says recently, it’s not the first time he’s had a lousy travel experience.

“They blamed it on the weather, but we’ve flown a few times in the past few months, and it’s been the same kind of deal,” Kobishop said. “Not excited to travel in the future. I just want to stay home or drive places more.”
With severe weather lingering in this week’s forecast, travelers should give themselves extra time as cancelations and delays could be a recurring theme.
Power outages also impacted the area and about 1,000 Duke Energy customers remained without power Tuesday morning after the Tornado Warnings that brought heavy rain to the area had expired.

As of Tuesday morning, Charlotte Airport listed less than 20 flights experiencing delays.
