Cape Breton Capers teams have different results to finish first half of AUS basketball season

SYDNEY, N.S. - The Cape Breton Capers basketball programs had mix results to wrap up the first half of their Atlantic University Sport season at Sullivan Field House in Sydney on Friday.

The Capers women's team downed the New Brunswick Reds 78-74 in a four-point contest in the standings.

Kiyara Letlow had an impressive game for the hometown Capers, dropping a game-high 40 points. Mackenzee Ryan chipped in with 16 points, while Hannah Smith and Hailey MacLeod both finished with five points apiece.

Marley Curwin led the way for the visitors with a team-high 15 points. Kylee Speedy recorded 12 points and Erin Ingalls had 10 points, both off the bench for the Reds.

On the men's side, Cape Breton was downed 94-85 in a four-point contest in the standings.

Norm Burry recorded 21 points, while Malik Grant had 19 points and Brandon Laryea dropped 11 points for the Reds.

Osman Omar had a game-high 27 points, while Jason Callaghan notched 17 points and Tyson Cato netted 11 points for the Capers.

Both Cape Breton teams will continue their regular season after the Christmas break when they travel to Antigonish to play St. Francis Xavier University on Jan. 6. The women play at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m.
