Ten Duinen 1138: a window upon the mysterious and private world of cistercian abbeys in Europe. The museum tells the story of the former cistercian abbey Onze Lieve Vrouw Ten Duinen. The abbey grew out of a modest hermitage into one of the most powerful monasteries within the county of Flanders. The monumental archaeological site reflects the lost glory of this abbey. The Maldague Collection is dedicated to the production of religious silver. The south abbey mill is situated 300 metres from the museum and now stands on one of the two original mill mounds.

Blankenberge
The Serpentarium at Blankenberge is a unique zoo of reptiles in Europe, where you can make an instructive trip through the jungle and the desert. The decor was completely built of concrete walls with carefully sculpted rockcarvings. So the interior is a perfect reproduction of the natural biotope of different animal species. All the terrariums were imitated true to nature and offer a unique aspect with a lot of living plants and artificial ones, very similar to the former. The cascades present in many terrariums offer a real visual spectacle. We penetrate into the wonderful world of constrictor snakes, venomous snakes, lizards, iguanas, crocodiles and all kinds of amphibians. We can admire impressive bird spiders, scorpions and strange insects. The stalactite and stalagmite caves with their remarkable inhabitants like the axolotls and the Mexican blind cavefish, together with the exotic bats form the link between the jungle and the desert of this amazing zoo.

The town of Poperinge is renowned as the countrys hop-growing capital. This plant is fascinating for more than one reason, as not only is it the fastest-growing plant in Western Europe, but its cones are also vital to the beer brewing process. While the history of hops is exciting enough, that of the folk who grow, harvest, sell and transform the hops is even more captivating. And all will be explained to you using cutting-edge technology at the Hop Museum. The building may be over 150 years old, but the tour developed for visitors is brand new (reopened at end of 2006). Images from films, audiovisual systems and even an interactive game on the hops theme transform a visit to the Hop Museum into an amazing experience for young and old alike.

O ost - V laanderen (East Flanders)

ost-Vlaanderen is a province full of diversity. Woodlands, flat polder landscapes, deep valleys, rustic villages, aristocratic historical towns and Gent the city of art and culture. All the ideal ingredients for a relaxed outing in the province. Each region in Oost-Vlaanderen has its own special atmosphere. Meetjesland, in the north-west of the province, is a prime example of discretion with its secluded coves. The typical round fields of Waasland are surrounded by pollarded willows in contrast to the cultural and industrial heritage sites that are the great assets of the Leie region. In Scheldeland rivers, dykes and hunting paths are the outstanding features while the Flemish Ardennes bears its title of the most beautiful landscape in Flanders with pride. And the beating heart in the middle of these five tourist regions is Gent the city of art and culture.

You just choose the route you want and cycle from one junction to another.

Taxandria Museum - TRAM 41 Granpa, tell us about the olden days. Have you ever asked this question? Or do your grandchildren ask you? Theres a significant chance the answer will be yes, because people have an innate curiosity about how things were in the past. The Taxandria Museum is a great way to satisfy this curiosity. Visitors can wander through the past of the Kempen. You can get a picture of the lives our ancestors led from the cradle to the grave in specially designed theme rooms. Definitely worth a visit! Beguinage Museum - TRAM 41 You cannot use diminutive terms for the beguines because they were very serious women. They created their own rules, elected their grand dames themselves and made their own money. Unfortunately there is only one beguine left in Belgium. She lives in Kortrijk. In the Beguinage Museum in Turnhout the memory of thousands of beguines is kept alive. No sinecure, but in the house where they lived and with objects that they used or worshipped, a great success! Info: Begijnhof 56, B-2300 Turnhout Tel.: 014/42.12.48 Fax: 014/41.74.59 Email: begijnhofmuseum@turnhout.be National Playing Card Museum - TRAM 41 The National Playing Card Museum is the showcase of Turnhout. If you are interested in the industrial, graphic and creative history of the town, then a visit to this museum is a must. A large number of companies have been printing playing cards and books here for ages. In the museum you will be able to discover all about the production processes used for playing cards. Old print presses, a steam machine and lots of colourful playing cards demonstrate that this branch of industry relies on ice-cold precision and fiery passion! Fancy a fun day out with friends? Planckendael is the perfect spot. You can play Tarzan in the trees, 14 metres off the ground. Or if you prefer, why not travel by raft from Africa to Oceania? Surrounded by nature, youll experience an exceptional day, and our animals will benefit from your visit as the receipts help towards our scientific research. This takes place at Planckendael, but also in the wild, as were continually extending our knowledge about our animals and have even won awards for it. So you too can learn a lot about nature and animals to surprise your friends Even in Roman times, Planckendael was a wildlife haven. Ok, it wasnt called Planckendael back then and there werent any rhinoceroses, bison or hyenas in the vicinity, but the species and numbers have grown, with the result that, today, its a wild animal park unique in its genre, with bags of space for adventure and discovery When nature calls you, you must reply. Hurry up and come to Planckendael and spend a day full of adventure with your friends. What weve renewed Not thick necks, but long necks! Planckendael has very recently made a brandnew giraffeliving quarters and a big Savannah where the new inhabitants will hopefully feel so good that they will surprise us with some little long-necks.. Did you realise that an adult male can be 5 metres tall? Then you really do have to look up!

The House of Glass (literally a house made of glass) is a unique project for Lommel and Flanders. In this Flemish Centre for Contemporary Glass Art, GLASS is represented in a myriad of different forms with detailed explanations. The House of Glass plays a combination of different roles. It acts as an exhibition space and shows glass items from different collections. Another of its many roles is to show works by contemporary (glass) artists . Visitors can also discover how glass blowers transform raw materials into a ball of glass and then into wonderful works of art. See them at work in their workshop and admire their handiwork. You will find the results of their craftsmanship in the exhibition area and the glass shop.

Tienen
The sugar town of Tienen, situated in hilly Hageland country, has a rich past, as well as inspiring monuments and fine buildings You can see that Tienen was a former Roman settlement by enjoying a visit to Het Toreke museum. The totally refurbished layout of the displays introduces you to a mystical and fascinating world dealing with the rituals about life and death in Roman times. We also show you the results of the excavations that began in 1997, uncovering the largest Roman cemetery in the Benelux. This extensive dig has revealed a treasure trove of objects and finds and gives us a look at the burial rites of the Romans and what they thought about the dead and the hereafter. Guided tours can be arranged. Situated nearby is the Sugar Museum, which guarantees a unique and almost overwhelming experience. Take an audio-guide on the surrealistic search for the lost taste of sugar, which immerses you in an amazing world of fact and fiction. The whole rich and colourful world of sugar is covered on the tour: the enthralling social history of the seasonal worker, harvesting the beet and processing it into sugar, the way bees produce honey, the effect that sugar has on our body and all the possible uses that sugar can be put to. Beguinage Beguine Court. Come to my court my Brides of Christ The Beguinage of Diest was founded in 1253 by Arnold IV, the Lord of Diest. It is one of the 13 Flemish beguinages to appear on the list of Unesco World Heritage Sites. This typical urban beguinage has one of the most beautiful entrance gates built in Rubens baroque style in 1671. One immediately gets a sense of the serenity, harmony and nature of the closed mediaeval communities in the beguinages. Most of the houses date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The Sint Catharina Church is one of the typical13th and 14th century beguinage churches.

New permanent exhibitions: Have you seen Europes greatest Dinosaur Gallery? Not yet? Well, 450 000 visitors already did - what are you waiting for? The permanent exhibition 250 years of natural sciences presents fourteen emblematic objects, witnesses of two and a half centuries of exciting research history, explaining research, collections, discoveries and adventures. At the entry you are greeted by an elephant that used to live in the former Brussels Zoo, located in the park nearby the Museum. Two gorillas recall the National Parks of Congo, founded by the Museum in 1930,

with support of the royal house. And there is a lot more to discover. The new Evolution Gallery tells the story of past, nowadays and future Life. Almost thousand fossil and recent specimens let you discover the incredible richness, sophistication and complexity of life. The evolutionary mechanisms are explained through many interactive displays. This marvellous hall makes the history of life accessible to everyone (as from 13 February 2009). Temporary exhibitions: In X-treme, the natural survivors, youll travel to the most extreme spots on our planet, where survival is an art. You will meet organisms which can freeze and unfreeze again, which are able to survive without a drop of water, to support a temperature of 120C, to find their way in pitch-dark environments or to live at very high altitudes with oxygen deficiency- impossible for human beings. These plants and animals are the real survival specialists! Hands-on activities and experiments are part of the exhibition (until 30 August 2009). Are you captivated by whales, dolphins and other marine animals? Do not miss the Whales and dolphins exhibition, which takes you to the depths of the sea, tells you about the diversity of species, their origins and their evolution, their way of life as well as the often ambiguous relationship between men and marine mammals. Discover this fascinating exhibition from October 14th 2009 on.
