Compilation of data on air bases is not a once and for all finished product, but dynamic, by extension,
corrections and additions coming to the event. Airbase List has therefore designed for continuous updating as new
data supply will. The list will be supplemented with direct links to documents, maps, drawings and automotive der
for each airbase.
The report will hopefully also help to stimulate interest in the Swedish flygba- prices and inspire further research
airbase.

Introduction
The Swedish military air bases have undergone extensive and interesting development and great efforts have been made in the
construction, maintenance and use of air bases. The development can be studied from several different perspectives. The
starting point and the interest may for example be in Swedish and international history, individual and group aspects,
community values, organizational structure, personnel categories, building, equipment, operational management, local history,
aviation mission, a certain air base or a certain time period.
The frame in the present report consists of lists of definitions, abbreviations, and air bases. Definition and the
abbreviation list is mainly taken from the open Publication RML-F (Rules of military aviation, soil, plants and
facilities, some airports and air bases) and Anbas (Instructions for root connection). Airbase List's own compilation
after 20 years of research and data are drawn from a large number of declassified documents at the War Archive
and the armed forces.
Air base Airport with special devices used for military purposes.
Airport On land defined area (including any buildings, installations and equipment) intended for aircraft takeoff,
landing and surface movement of the ground.
Airport Land Area of terraced surface intended for aircraft takeoff and landing, and within and
immediately adjacent to this normalized obstacle-free surfaces. Airfield surface built normally
runways. For airfield hear special devices to promote air safety.
The official definition of the concept of military air base and military airport in this context, however, slightly too tight,
because they exclude some categories of air bases which may also be of historic interest.
Airbase The list consists of a large amount of structured data, which means that it can be difficult to create an
overall picture and context by just reading the list. To try to clarify the image of the air base the development, I have
the list added the example of, among other things temporary and planned air bases. I have also supplemented the
report with a brief summary of the Swedish military airbase developments.
pioneering time
The period 1909 - 1939 is characterized by few and insignificant expanded airfields. Flights fields consisted of opening na grassy
areas and obstacle clearance was performed when needed to make landing and take less risk. The Army and Navy had initially
care for the few aircraft. Naval Aviation, who had a strong position in military aviation, using only sjöflygbaser. Although there
was flygplatsanläggning- are simple.
After the First World War made new demands on the Army and Navy aviation fältmässighet. To carry out surveillance
flights along the borders of Sweden with the weak performance aircraft were required ombaseringar and ground staff who
serviced the airplanes on temporary bases. Swedish first

war airfields (Vänersborg and Boden) was added during the First World War. Aviation also participated increasingly in the army and
flottmanövrarna.
1926 founded the Air Force's own defense arm, but much of the independence of army aviation and naval aviation
remained. Five air corps added up (F 1 - F 5) with positioning areas, hangars, workshops and expanded airports. During the
1930's first portion were also added in some övningsflygplat- see (Vännäs, Rinkaby etc.). In the 1936 defense established
that the air force would be expanded to include seven air bases, seven training airports, four training centers, two central
flygverk- cities and strengthened management function. Flight of the joints basing the war, with the proliferation of special
war bases, had become more prominent by the international focus on bombers, but no decision was taken on that issue. It
was at the old war order. The land-based air units would promptly rebase the peace flotilla to then rekognoserad farmland. In
winter, the aircraft would be equipped with skis and fly to the appropriate frozen lakes. Sjöflyget would spread to temporary
locations in coastal and inland waters.
A couple of scares from air traffic 1937-1938 made it clear, however, that wars airports must be expanded in peacetime, not
the Air Force would be completely beaten in the first hours or days of hostile air strikes against Sweden. The Royal Aerospace
Administration (KFF) was the autumn of 1938 to carry out a nationwide comprehensive inventory of suitable sites for construction
of the war airports. The survey results were presented in March 1939. A total of 180 had been conceivable areas of the country,
of which the most suitable sites 95's cost calculated. 40 war airfield proposed for deployment in a first stage. This proposal was
revised and the parliament approved in June 1939 funding for the construction of 20 war airfield, divided on the rear (inside the
country) and the front base areas (near the coast).

standby time
With the outbreak of WWII in 1939 prioritized the construction of the war airports and ex- pansion of the flotilla airports and civil
airports as an important part of the defense rearmament. Sweden's few squadrons were ordered to urgently rebase at airfields
that were considered suitable for the starting base ring to defend Sweden. The problem was that there were very few airports
to rebase to the first year of the war. An example of this was 8-9 in April 1940 when the bomber squadron F 1 at Vasteras /
Hasslo promptly would rebase to Skåne and the West Coast and take the highest krigsbered- cabinets. The invasion of
Denmark and Norway was in full and F 1 divisions with their twin-engine B 3 (Junkers Ju 86) constitutes a significant part of
Sweden krigsflyg at a hostile invasion. Only the airfields at Ljungbyhed (F 5) and Trollhättan (ASJA / SAAB) were provided.
Meanwhile omba- tion and dissemination very important to the Air Force would not be beaten already at first hostile Resistant
assault on.
Ground staff belonged in the months following the outbreak of war the squadron temporarily based at a krigsbas and
ground force moved by road and rail between the airports. 1940 war organizers were Air Force ground forces fully. Flights
bases formed the so-called base groups of three airfields, under English model "Satellite Airfields". Base group consisted of a
basgruppsstab and three station departments. Station Division was in turn divided into 2-4 Station companies. Base groups
was not permanently based in the field, but would regroup for their area until the emergency situation demanded it. Station the
companies would go out quickly to prepare the airfields and the receipt of basgruppens body. Responsibility for the base
groups of the airfield was awarded the different Air Force Wings.
1942 Air Force has grown significantly and it was felt necessary to make a reorganization of the air base operations. The
country was divided into airbase areas (Flybo), where a number of air bases and base groups were included. Another innovation
was the Army's local defense units were given the task to set up airfields platoons at the Air Force's war airbases. Army Airfield
platoon was more permanent advantages laid at the air base, even when no air operations would be taking over responsibility for
the war airfield maintenance and security.
Altogether they built during the stand-out 39 pieces of war airfields and gradually improved the existing military
and civilian airports.
base 60
Air Base Base system 60 were introduced in the 1950's to meet requirements of the cold war and technology with jets
mm. Permanent coated runway (runway), about 2000 m long, were built. At least one reservvägbas built air base. A
basbataljon (Basbat 60) organized to man each base 60 ordinary war airbase (O base). The base region expanded to a
few square miles and the air base's functions were grouped widespread in this area. A protected com- command center
(KC) was built a few kilometers from the airport for the management of the air base's operations.
The aircraft received more diversified investment between missions by aircraft seats were divided up into three areas. At the
airstrip front clarifying areas (Forward of) the fighters in the highest starting readiness. A rear clarification zone (Behind) 1-2 km
from the airport, which attack and reconnaissance aircraft were clarified for the mission. About 5-10 km from the aircraft placed
in the field of installation for an area (UOM) for more extensive overhaul and repair or back. At regular war and exercise air
bases were between military units exercises (CDT) and increased preparedness a bastropp of 8-10 people firmly placed at the
air base for the clarification of individual aircraft and the maintenance of the airport.
Base 60-roll was very extensive and it became completely clear only in the mid 1970s.

base 90
Base 90 was a new air base concepts for greater mobility and increased flexibility in air base service for emergency and war.
Base 90-building began in the mid-1980s. A new battalion organization created Bas 90 war airbases and named Basbataljon 85
(Basbat 85). Groups for clarification of aircraft, air traffic control, communications, air base security, airport maintenance, etc.,
would be able to quickly regroup to the runways that are currently considered to be most suitable league to receive landing
aircraft. Air Base was supplemented with more landing opportunities and more scattered airplane seats.
Some previous regular air bases went over together with civil airports to be lateral or reserve bases to Bas 90 bases. In the
airbase area complemented the main course with some short courses and a narrow path. Special parking spaces for large
transport aircraft were added at some Base 90 field. Older reservvägbaser within the base area was built, in some cases on the
narrow paths. The management system was computerized gradually and associated functions installed corresponding new
technology.
A protected bascentral (BASC) was set up at the main base for the overall management of flygbasbatal- ion. A makeshift
with BASC in existing military barracks or temporary agency building barracks were gradually replaced by a protected
bunker. The relatively slow rate of expansion, however, resulted only part airbases could obtain a permanent BASC bunker
before closing down by Bas
90. The command center (KC) modernized by including a new technical equipment. Duty clarify cleaning head placed in
KC, instead of previously having had her living in klargörings- area. Base 90 era was cut short due to changes in the
marketplace after the Cold War and was discontinued in the mid-1990s. Base 90 system is now completely dismantled.
7
Network-based defense of international cooperation
After the Cold War and the changed threat to our society made new demands on an effective defense. The outdated
invasion defense was replaced with network-based defense (NBD), a mobile, flexible and small defense to be able to
operate internationally in cooperation with other countries. For military air forces some (new name for the Air Force)
followed a middle period of the 1990s. Aerospace & Defense would with unit JAS 39 Gripen aircraft switched to the
reinvention of the task to provide direct air support (DFU) to ground forces and air defense task was given lower priority to
a secondary ability. At the air base side planned a stripped Organization (Bas
2000). These plans resulted in 3-4 nationwide airbase battalions (later reduced to just one airbase battalion) and
independent operating companies and platoons (Basbat 04). Planning for Basbat 04 was abandoned in the early 2000s
and the current organization of an international effort facilitated unity began to develop. Airport Unit (PU, Basbat 08 / t)
to be at short notice be able to operate from strategic and tactical air bases both nationally and internationally. The
device is equipped with a system for variable air base line, which means that the working position and
telecommunications equipment are placed in the air transportable containers. Mobile, wireless computing systems,
satellite and IP communications (Internet) compatible with foreign systems, connect to the outside world. Other air base
material is also characterized by mobility. Examples of fast omgrupperingsbar stock is tent hangar and height
adjustable control towers mounted on a trailer.
8
Construction of airbases
The planning of the air base expansion starts with Fortifikationsverket investigating future flygbaspro- projects in consultation with
the Armed Forces and the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration. Then set up investment plans for funding requests and
participation in the updating of the Armed Forces program plans. When the decision was made airbase expansion begins design
work and in consultation with the defense develop the air base's future design.
At the reconnaissance and design of air bases must be in addition to purely operational aspects including environmental
aspects (eg risk of noise pollution and water pollution) are taken into account. It is not unusual for some 20 alternative positions
needed to be examined before the final location could be fixed.
The military airfields have evolved much since the pioneering days during the early 1900s. The first aircraft of the
Defense Staff had very modest demands on the runways and a reasonably smooth grass field with a few hundred meters
in length was perfectly acceptable. The flat rinks and winter was offered on the lakes was of the highest class for its time.
For the Royal fältte- legrafkårens flight department, before the air force's formation, had the old drill fields so good Base
ring capabilities to any particular construction of airfields are not required. First, in the mid 1930s when the Air Force
increased with faster and heavier aircraft, initiated the expansion of air fields at some fleets, including F 4, F 6, F 7 and F
eighth
Faced with the threat of a future world war began in 1939 working with the deployment of a large number of war airfield.
To enhance preparedness in these fields had not lawns was viable enough for flight operations were established beginning
in 1940 special runways with permanent coating called runways. The first runways at our military airfield was laid out in the
shape of a star or an isosceles triangle. At this time, namely airplanes because of its sensitivity to crosswind takeoff and
land in relatively straight headwind.
With jetplanens introduction in 1946, the first operational was the De Havilland Vampire J 28A and SAAB J 21R, the
situation changed radically. Because of the high takeoff and landing speed required significantly longer courses, but in
return the jets smaller cross wind sensitive, which meant that it now could normally settle for a single runway. The
standard length was 2 000 m and a width of about 40 m for flotilla airfields and 25 m for war airfields. As a reserve airfield
could use sections with a coated width of down to 12 m. For aircraft maneuvering on the ground built taxiways and
parking spaces with devices for aircraft supply with fuel, ammunition and electric power.
The original grass field exists today in the form of a flight streets surrounding the runway. Flights thoroughfare is intended to ensure
adequate obstacle clearance and potential for making an emergency landing. When flying in darkness and bad weather required airfield
lighting and telecommunications equipment in order to enable safe takeoff and landing.
The demands on the tracks carrying capacity over the years has tended to increase. The modern krigsflyg plan high wheel loads
and landing speed has resulted in such high demands on the rolling track buoyancy that most military airfields also receive civilian
aircraft and heavy military transport aircraft.

Subdivision of the Swedish military airbases
There are several different kinds of Swedish military air bases. Air bases can also be divided in many different ways. In this
report, the following division into twelve categories:
(Highway strip, reservvägbas, reserved start streaks, short path or thin web on the public road. Short Course or narrow path at the air base,

Codings on airbases
It has over the years been a variety of notation at the military air bases. It is common consistent way to describe the location
of an air base in abbreviated form is to set a specific geographical place names near the air base airport name and
complementing it with a code mark. Flight Database code designation gave the place name more closely determine what
type of facility (air base) available on the site and what kind of air base terms (eg wars airport). One problem that arose
during World War II in 1939 was to a large part of the air base 'location would be kept secret. It was no longer allowed to talk
about or disc mode name. During the standby time it was forbidden and punishable to enter codings and something about
the business of air bases. The exception was in the secret papers and planning discussions between competent persons.
10
Job numbers and field numbers in the war airbases
The various wars airbase the existence and geographical location would in principle totally kept secret from the outside world. It was the
starting position at the outbreak of war in 1939. In the communication between försvarsmyndig- units and field units must always know
exactly which war airbase intention. It was enough, of course not, for example giving orders announce: "Time number 3.10.1941.0315.
From OB receiver manager F 1: Attention, 3rd Division F 1, Ombasering a krigsbas in central Sweden ".
In new construction and the continued expansion of secret war airbases established Flights administration building
department a temporary job number for each airfield construction. The designation of the finished war, the airfield was a
field number set by the Air Force. Workplace and field numbers matched not normally.
The first year of the war in autumn 1939 - the summer of 1940, there were only a few wars airports that have had time to
become somewhat extended. After starting with a hybrid of field related codes and field number (e.g., V 9), established a strictly
secret field number list of existing and planned war airports and in planning the supports set a given geographical (secret)
location name. Local name linked to the farm or village name of the place where the war the airfield was built. Examples of field
number: Field 1 (Björka).
Field numbers were retained until 1975. In Base 60 system had a number of previous krigsflygfäl- ten switched to be open
practice air bases, civil airports or aviation operations had been shut down permanently. At the same time built a large
number of new war airbases around the country. Secrecy surrounding field numbers were later removed, but to name a
place name or location of unauthorized was always a crime.
C numbers
Civil airports to be used by the Air Force war airbase assigned during the Second World War special civil number
(C-number). Upon extension works also received these airbases temporary work number (see above).
codename
FAR codes (Fixed Call sign for Reporting of air defense) is assigned air defense systems / units that cover name for not
disclosing business purpose and direction. However, I have until recently not known if even air bases assigned aliases.
After studying formerly secret document H 1746/62, entitled Provisions for the basing of war bases in northern Sweden in
1963 received at the Air Force Headquarters 12/12 in 1962, I can state that the cover name appeared on air bases.
FV numbers
FV air base number (01) was introduced in 1975 for the airbases then still used by the Air Force in peace service,
during exercises and for possible emergency and war. 1999, FV three digit numbers, by a zero added first (001).
Since most of these air bases dismantled, the notation now lost its topicality.
11
FORTV designation
Fortifications Agency (FORTV) has its own air base numbering used in plant projects and the management of the
military air bases.
ICAO code
ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) system for airport codes. The codes are used worldwide for civil and
military airports.
Coordinate
Airport codes and place names have not been adequate when needed to provide a more precise location on an air base and its various
group sites. Before about 1946 had only general staff maps available for more lägesangivning, which also required the task recipient
had the same kind of maps, and preferably the same edition. The Air Force subsequently introduced Georef coordinates, which gave
more secure but not very accurate position determination. Nowadays, the armed forces have been transferred to a universal
internationally X, Y coordinate system that meets the requirements for safe and precise positioning.
