Instill qualities that each player will need in any environment: (a) Pride, self-confidence and self-esteem; (b) Taking responsibility for actions and performance; (c) self-discipline; and (d) Sportsmanship, cooperation and sacrifice for team benefit, not the individual’s. Winning is not the first priority, until State and Nationals. Players learn most from losing, not winning. Making mistakes is one of the most important tools to achieve success. NiallJohnston.jpg

Niall Johnston
n.johnston@sdscsurf.com
USSF “D” License
SDSC coach since 2019

Niall grew up in Galway, which is in the West of Ireland. He played for his local team, called Salthill Devon, which was then and still is one of the leading junior clubs in the country. Niall played soccer in college; back then it was called UCG. After college he came to the US and for many years played for a team called Costa Mesa Hibernians, made up mostly of Irish, English and Scottish players plus a handful of American college players. They played in the PSL, which was one of the best leagues in the LA area - a lot of players from the league subsequently played in the MLS which started in 1996.

Favorite soccer moments: 1994 was a great year for soccer in the US and led to some of his best soccer memories. The World Cup came to the US and a lot of the games were played at the Rosebowl in Pasadena. It was also a big year for Niall personally, as his twin girls were born. Because he was involved in the Irish soccer community in the LA area, he was asked to be a part of the one of the two opening ceremonies that the World Cup held that year: the first in Chicago and the second at the Rosebowl. He had the honor to carry the Irish flag into the stadium - a very cool feeling. He remembers waiting outside the stadium; two very cool things happened... First, Niall and a friend listened to the live radio broadcast of the Ireland-Italy game where Ireland beat Italy 1-0 in a shock result! And then, right after that they saw one of the ex-US national team players holding the actual World Cup. The player let them touch it but there was no way he was going to let them hold it! That was his best soccer memory and he wasn’t even playing! A few weeks later Niall was at the World Cup final between Italy and Brazil; when it went to penalties he was right behind the goal that they used. Roberto Baggio - the Italian player - almost hit him when he missed the final penalty and gave the win to Brazil.
