Data can be viewed in IBM
Cognos using dashboards,
reports, queries and analysis.
Moreover data can generate
alerts.
BI objects are available using
a wide variety of clients.
Data can be delivered to different profiles that access to BI objects as a
result of authorization permissions granted to them.
19. How Airgest uses IBM Cognos
Each business line corresponds with a specific folder in IBM
Cognos BI
Each folder contains a set of reports used to satisfy
performance and KPI informations required by the managers
Enviromental
Handling
HR
Security
Traffic Stats
Moreover, each folder is a package of other informations
(called metadata) useful to create, without particular computer
knowledge, reports, queries, dashboards in a self-service
mode using a simple drag&drop functionality
Each BI object is subjected to privileges in terms of
authorization about writing and reading
IBM Cognos includes an internal repository where BI objects resides.
20. How Airgest uses IBM Cognos
Each user can execute reports correponding to its
visualization privileges in different output formats:
HTML, Excel, PDF, CSV, XML.
Reports can also be sent by email directly from the
Cognos environment
Moreover, sending a report by email can also be scheduled
An alerting tool is provided in order to send a report by email
when a particular event occurs
21. How Airgest uses IBM Cognos
PAX per work time of Handling resources
Movements per work time of Handling
resources
- KPI defined for each month
- Comparison between two years choosen by a
prompt
• Effective representation
• Immediacy of information
• Accuracy of information (the calculation is
defined once)
• Integration between traffic statistics and human
resources in real time
• No more calculations in Excel files
• No possibility for human mistakes about
calculation
22. How Airgest uses IBM Cognos
Often analysis start from an aggregate level and then increasingly
more detailed
In Airgest, IBM Cognos users can perform analysis starting from an aggregate level
and drill down in details only by a click
Considering an analysis per year, a simple click can display data per quarter, then per
months and so on
In this way a report set is also an interactive way
to bring information and not only a tabular data
representation
It is also possible perform a click on an item in
order to execute another report using as filter the
clicked item (not only following a hierarchy
structure)
23. How Airgest uses IBM Cognos
A generic user with privileges about the
ability to create BI objects is called Author.
An author can insert a list and can
drag&drop metadata (on the right of the
picture) in order to display the required set
of informations
Reports can be saved in the Cognos BI
repository (called Cognos Connection) and
shared with other users
Authors can also specify dynamic filters
using prompts and conditional styles in
order to apply colors, font size, font color,
etc. according to specific thresholds
24. How Airgest uses IBM Cognos
Informations can also be obtained
using an app for mobile devices
called IBM Cognos Mobile
This app is available for Android,
iOS, Blackberry and Windows
Mobile operating systems
If you want, you can install IBM
Cognos Mobile in your smartphone
and play with some offline
examples (active reports)
25. How Airgest uses IBM Cognos
In Powerpoint, for example, you have
to design your presentation just the
first time.
Using IBM Go Office you can update
data without perfoming each time
copy&paste of your graphs
IBM Cognos GO Office! is a MS Office Add-in which allows an integration with IBM Cognos
For loyal Excel users, custom
calculations and custom data can be
integrated with institutional reports and
sheets can be updated using a simple
“Updata Data” button provided by the
plugin
26. Achieved goals
• Improved data monitoring
• Less stress for controllers due to report production
• Improved responsability in users input
• Optimization of controller activities: job time is not more dedicated to data gathering, to data
aggregation and report creation (e.g. each quarter)
• Now time is spent to analyze data and not for creating something to analyze
• Faster comparison between periods
• User mistakes are immediately revealed and easily corrected
• Engagement: use of modern approach encourages controllers to enhance their knowledge
and business processes (…think better)
• More then 200 reports developed today for 16 airport areas
27. Many thanks for your attention

Good afternoon
My name is Camillo Gioè and I’m a Business Analytics Consultant at Elmi.
In my presentation I will speak about the experience related to the business intelligence project developed by Elmi with the help of Airgest referents.
In details, I’ll describe how IBM Cognos helped us to reach the goals of the project
IBM Cognos is a world wide leader in the business intelligence field.
It is a web based BI platform developed by IBM
It provides some tools useful to report, to analyze….to explore data ensuring an high level of freedom to perform significant insights.
It also provides an ad hoc query tool and a simple intuitive environment to create personal and institutional dashboards adopting a self service BI mode.
Because we are at the Maximo Airport Summit is mandatory to underline that IBM Cognos is an embedded software in IBM Maximo and it represents a remarkable complementary tool in order to take more advantages about the Maximo adoption, especially in a complex environment like an airport
In fact, IBM Cognos allows to work on Maximo data facilitating the monitoring activities and the requirements expressed by business line managers using reports, dashboard and alarms.
As we will see, Cognos tools allow to explore Maximo data.
In this way users not only display data but they can interact with them in order to optimize the information contained in the same data.
Now, let’s take a look deeper into the solution developed according to Airgest requirements and its business processes, the computer technologies in use and users skills.
The BI system receives in input different data sources: excel files, access databases, csv files, relational databases and some checklists sent by email by airport operators that compile them mobile devices.
All these data are extracted and preprocessed in order to underline bad data quality or incoherence. When possibile, a transformation phase is applied to them following business logic rules useful to give additional value to data
Then data are integrated in a unique centralized data warehouse designed to ensure high level of performance.
The data warehouse represents the data layer used by IBM Cognos tools to extract and display data.
Data are automatically load into the data warehouse using scheduled processes that are executed each early morning or using batch files which can be executed by users in order to load data asynchronously.
Today, the BI system has about fifty processes developed to extract, transform and load data into the data warehouse.
The different data sources just mentioned involve different airport areas. As said, integrated data loaded into data warehouse are available in IBM Cognos. They can be viewed using dashboard, reports, queries and analysis . Moreover data can generate alerts based on thresholds or when a more complex event occurs.
These BI objects are available using a wide variety of clients. In fact, a plugin for Microsoft Office ( ase we will see later) allows to use Excel or Powerpoint as client. We can also use a normal browser to access informations or mobile devices.
So data can be delivered to different profiles that have access to BI objects as a result of authorization permissions granted to them.
Now, I’m going to describe how Airgest users use IBM Cognos.
IBM Cognos includes an internal repository where BI object resides. It is divided into two main sections: the first, Public folders, represents a shared location where are saved enterprise objects.
Private folders is a personal area, where user can save personal analysis, report drafts, etc.
In airgest public folder there are about 16 folders, one for each involved business line.
Each folder, contains a set of reports used to satisfy performance and KPI informations required by the managers
Each BI object is subjected to privileges in terms of authorization about writing and reading
We will see that users, over administrator system users, can have a viewer profile but also an author profile.
As you can understand, viewer are users that can only use what other powerful users developed for them
Author users, instead, can create reports, dashboards, etc. They can define the output format of a report and generally have writing and reading permissions on BI objects.
Moreover, each folder is a package of other informations (called metadata) useful to create, without particular computer knowledge, reports, queries, dashboards in a self-service mode using a simple drag&drop functionality
Each user can execute reports corresponding to its visualization privileges in different output formats: HTML, Excel, PDF, CSV, XML.
Report can also be sent by email directly from the Cognos environment so without save files in my computer desktop for sending later a message with attachment with my email client.
Moreover, sending a report by email can also be scheduled. So I can decide to send one or more reports to a set of recipients on a particular hour or on odd days of the week and so on
IBM Cognos also provides a tool able to send an email or an email with reports as attachment when a certain event to be monitored occurs.
Of course a report can include different type of representation like a list, a crosstab or charts.
Mr. Guarrera spoke about KPI. In this slide I would show an example of representation about two KPI, Pax per work time of handling resources and Full time Equivalent per work time of handling resources.
As you can immediately see, for both representations we have a month detailed information and a comparison between two years. Both these informations, i.e the time periods, can be selected using a time prompt.
Ok…you will say I can reach this goal using excel too, but I should create each time my report and spend time using Excel. Even if I have an excel model, I need to update my data source gathering data and, may be, preprocessing my data.
Moreover, I have to insert in this task also a percent of risk due to human mistakes.
This KPI can be calculated immediately because the calculation was defined and tested only one time.
Moreover, I just have all data I need, i. e. data from traffic statistics and data from human resources.
I don’t need ask data to IT team or other colleagues because all data are consolidated into my data warehouse.
Often analysys and informations need start from an aggregate level.
For example, we could perform a query about the aircraft movements per year. But, then we would have a quarter detailed information and then a month detail ad so on. In Airgest, users can use drill functionalities provided by IBM Cognos in order to analyze data in a lower level of information.
User can also click on a particular item of interest and execute another report with a different structure from the previous but using the clicked item as a filter of the new report.
For example I can click on year item in a report and uses this year to filter another report.
In this way a report set is also an interactive report set because it allows me to bring information contained in my, so-called, data treasure, and not only in a flat tabular data representation
Now, we will talk about Authors, i.e. users with permissions and the ability to create BI objects
So, an author can create a simple report inserting a list and performing drag&drop actions related to the desired representation.
The picture shows as a metadata listed in the right can used to create a report.
Obviously report can be more complex introducing data groups, dynamic filters, summarize, calculation and condition styles in order to apply color and other formatting options according to specific threshold.
Of course IBM developed an application for mobile devices, called IBM Cognos Mobile, available for the most common operating systems like Android and iOS.
This app allows to a mobile user to browse Cognos folders and display BI objects
Because we all have Microsoft Office installed in our computer, IBM Cognos provides a plugin, which users can install on its own computer, in order to integrate sheets of Microsoft Excel or powerpoint slides with reports.
This plugin is very useful, for example, for loyal Excel users: custom calculations and custom data can be integrated with institutional reports and sheets can be updated using a simple “Updata Data” button provided by the plugin.
For Powerpoint we can have a similar scenario. I can, in fact, create once my presentation having tables and charts and then , may be the next quarter, I can update all tables and charts of my presentation easily…updating data from IBM Cognos.
In this way, I will not have to copy and paste all objects in my presentation or in my Excel sheets each time.
Summarizing…. the achieved goals are listed in this slide.
In fact, today airgest has improved its ability to perform data monitorg and controllers are less stressed about report production. In fact, they are now concentrated in data analysis rather that data gathering , data aggregation and excel files management
Moreover, users is more responsible about data input and any errors is almost revealed and easily corrected
At the end, use of modern approach encourages controllers to enhance their knowledge and improve business processes
Ok…That’s all…Many thanks for your attention
In this slide we put our contacts for possible future insights
Arrivederci
