The Township of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls offers a variety of municipal services, including an airstrip in Nestor Falls, two fitness centres, two landfill sites, two libraries, fire and rescue services, as well as other emergency services, and much more. Click on the links below for more information regarding all municipal services offered in the Township.

Airport

The new and improved AirportLanding Strip is located on Nestor Falls and is operated under the authority of the Township of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls.

The Transport Canada details are as follows: (TC LID: CJA5), is located 1 NM (1.9 km; 1.2 miles) north of Nestor Falls, Ontario, Canada, 3,665′ x 75′ asphalt.

Fees:

Landing Fees:
Minimum $10.00 per aircraft up to 3 000 kg and $5.00 per 1 000kg over 3 000 kg thereafter, plus HST.*
*Note: Fees are applicable to both Domestic and International origin flights.

Parking Fees:
$10.00 per day, plus HST.
Parking is unsupervised.

Seasonal Landing/Parking Fee (one time per season):
$300.00, plus HST.
Parking is unsupervised.

Any damages incurred by use of the Nestor Falls Airport/Landing Strip must be reported to the Township of Sioux Narrows – Nestor Falls immediately. Damage is to be repaired or replaced to an as good as or better than before damage occurred state by the person/persons that damaged the Airport/Landing Strip to the satisfaction of the Township of Sioux Narrows – Nestor Falls. The Township of Sioux Narrows – Nestor Falls is not responsible for loss of or damage to personal property.

All refuse, garbage, items, etc., must be removed from the site. No refuse, garbage, items, etc., shall be left or stored on site.

Cemeteries

The Township offers several options for memorialization and operates two cemeteries: Pineridge Cemetery in Sioux Narrows and Norman Cottam Memorial Cemetery in Nestor Falls. Both our cemeteries are governed by municipal by-laws and provincial laws. Visitors are welcome at our cemeteries, but please respect these special places.

Emergency Measures

Be Prepared, Not Scared:

If you are unprepared for a disaster, it can shatter your life. Expect the unexpected and plan for it. Knowing what to do when a disaster strikes will help you better control the situation and be in a better position to recover more quickly.

No community is equipped to handle all the demands of a catastrophe. Help your community be preparing yourself. Make sure everyone in your family knows what to do before, during and after an emergency. Set up a family meeting to discuss how you can best prepare for an emergency.

What can you do?

Have a family plan. Here are the Top Ten things that you can do to prepare your family for an emergency:

Post emergency telephone numbers where your family can find them easily, such as on the refrigerator.
When calling for help, specify: who you are, where you are, what happened, and what help you need.
Teach your children how and who to call for help.
Keep a home emergency kit handy.
Keep fresh water in a container and change it every two weeks.
Keep a one week food supply on hand at all times in your home.
Teach all family members how to turn off the gas, power and water.
Pick a family meeting place in case you are ever evacuated or must leave your home. Tell friends to call this location for information about you and your family.
Keep a survival kit in your car.
Always keep your gas tank half full. This way if you are evacuated, you can use your car.

Remember: Tune into CKSX Radio (local, low-frequency broadcast, currently working on expanding broadcast range) 91.1 FM, CBC Radio 95.7 FM, Kenora 89.5 FM, Fort Frances 93.1 FM or Warroad, MN 92.5 FM for details and stay tuned for updates. Avoid using the telephone unless your call is urgent. Telephone equipment can become overloaded during an emergency. Please leave the lines free for emergency workers.

If You Are Evacuated

Pack essential items, including: extra clothing, blankets, eyeglasses, dentures, prescription drugs, other important medication, cheque book, credit cards, other important papers, driver’s license, other identification, toilet articles.
Turn off appliances (except refrigerators and freezers).
Lock windows and doors.
Leave pets indoors, with food and water for 2-3 days. Pets are not normally allowed at evacuation reception centres.

Your home emergency kit should include:

Your car emergency kit should include:

Fire extinguisher (multi-purpose dry chemical – ULC approved)
Tire puncture kit
Solar blanket
Waterproof matches/butane lighter
Large diameter candle in deep can
Insect repellent

In Winter, add (car kit):

Ice scraper
Shovel
Material to help with traction (ie. kitty litter)
Change of warm clothing
Sleeping bag and axe saw if traveling out of town

Your Own Power and Heat Supply

To prepare in case of a major power outage, you may want to consider a portable generator. This may be especially important if you live with a person who has critical needs (ie. on an oxygen machine) or as a backup for essential business services (ie. gas pumps or refrigeration). It is also important to remember that generators need gasoline or diesel fuel and must be run outdoors.

Make sure that backup heat sources, such as wood or gas stoves and fireplaces, are properly installed and inspected and that you have extra fuel on hand. Remember – unvented combustible heat sources, such as charcoal or propane barbeques and kerosene heaters, emit fumes which can kill! If you have no backup power or heat supply at your house, make sure your emergency plan includes a place your family can go that does.

Fire & Rescue

The primary mission of the Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls Fire Rescue Services is to protect the lives and property of the community we serve, by providing prompt and professional serves in the event of fire, emergencies, disasters or any other event which may threaten public welfare.

The residents of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls have a ready access to a wide range of emergency services, including Fire, Police, Ambulance, Search and Rescue and other allied emergency services such as Community Emergency Management and Mutual Fire Aid.

The Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls Fire Rescue Services is comprised of two Stations:

Station 1 at Sioux Narrows and Station 2 at Nestor Falls. Our service includes three pumpers, one rapid attack unit, two utility units and one marine unit.

Our Fire Rescue Services Department is comprised of a dedicated group of local volunteers who are specially trained in the provision of Fire Suppression and Rescue Services. Our Chief of Fire Rescue Services, Mike Kakeeway, is a resident of Sioux Narrows.

Thanks to Mike, and numerous dedicated volunteer community members, our service is in compliance with the Ontario Fire Marshal and Emergency Management Ontario. We have programs in place for Personnel Education/Training, Community Emergency Management, Smoke Detectors and Public Education and Awareness. With provincial funding we have been afforded the opportunity to purchase new equipment and gear. Our Fire Rescue Service Personnel have been participating in ongoing local training, including live-fires and controlled burns. We also partner with other departments in the area, Lake of the Woods Search and Rescue and the Ministry of Natural Resources, to participate in regional training exercises in a wide variety of topics. These training activities provide our fire fighters with the tools they need to effectively provide fire rescue services in our municipality.

Recycling

Our new recycling compactors have been installed, our staff have received their orientation on operation and we have received the new programming information from the new collector, EMTERRA!

Household Recycling Collection Depot

Accepted:

All household and office paper: newspaper, inserts, flyers, catalogues, magazines, telephone books, paper gift wrap, greeting cards.
Paper bags with single & multiple paper layers, eg. Pet food bags.
Corrugated cardboard and cardboard boxes.
Hot and cold beverage cups.
Shredded office paper must be placed in a clear, full-size plastic bag.
All food, beverage and household plastic containers, plastic packaging, bottles, jugs, tubs, pails, clamshells, cold drink cups with numbered triangles: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7. BUT: Remove caps and lids. Containers must be empty. Please rinse/clean.
Metal steel and aluminum cans, foil and trays from food and beverages. Containers must be empty. Please rinse/clean.
TetraPak and gable top cartons, juice boxes, soup boxes, milk cartons. Containers must be empty. Please rinse/clean.
Glass food and beverage containers. Containers must be empty. Please rinse/clean.

Not accepted:

Dirty, full, part-full or otherwise, containers.
Plastic bags (except clear bags containing office shredded paper).
Styrofoam packaging and trays.
Non-paper gift wrap, eg. Foil gift wrap.
Cardboard boxes with wax coating.
Foil-lined boxes or bags.
Paper towels, napkins or tissues.
Used motor oil containers.
Batteries.
Bioplastic or compostable plastic.
Liquid absorbing pads, eg. In trays of meat, poultry, fish, etc.
Plastic wrap and shrink wrap for meat, poultry, fish, cheese, etc.
Plastic blister packs, eg. Plastic/paper for packaging batteries, toothbrushes, etc., or plastic/foil protective packaging for chewing gum, pills, etc.
Ceramic plant pots.
Plastics that are not containers, eg. Toys, laundry baskets, plastic cutlery, etc.
Mirrors, window glass, broken glass.

The new collection bin system is different than in the past, the items must be deposited loose into the bins, NOT bagged as they were previously. Therefore, the Township will no longer be distributing the clear blue recycling bags.

Helpful hint: as cardboard boxes are recyclable, place all other loose recyclable items in the cardboard box and bring to the site. Leave immediately adjacent to the bin for attendant to deposit in the container.

Any acceptable containers should be rinsed before placement in the bin.

No food waste or regular household garbage is acceptable.

We are now officially accepting electronic waste at the landfill sites! Please ask the attendants for directions where to place your items. Please ensure that you delete any data, if possible, from any electronic item(s) containing data storage. Absolutely no microwaves, air conditioners or smoke detectors. This program will divert waste and contribute to the longevity of our sites. Please recycle your electronic waste! Thank You.
