Gonzalo Higuain could very well call time on his illustrious career at the end of the MLS season, but the Inter Miami star has not made that decision yet.

Higuain spoke briefly Tuesday afternoon to clear up the rumors that had popped up about his future during the previous 24 hours. Higuain’s father, Jorge, had told an Argentine television show on Monday that Gonzalo was set to hang up his cleats upon conclusion of the current Inter Miami campaign, but the 34-year-old forward stated that was not the case.

“It was a misunderstanding that he had with me,” Gonzalo Higuain said in Spanish on Tuesday. “I never told him about retirement in any moment. He expressed himself incorrectly. Mistakes like that can happen, but it is not the reality of the situation.

“I am focused on the club and fulfilling my contract. If the moment comes where I make that decision to retire, I will be the one to communicate it. No one besides me. Whatever my dad or anyone else says, it has nothing to do with what I can say so when the time comes to retire I will be the first one to say it.”

The accomplished striker that represented Argentina on the international level 75 times and played in a World Cup final is currently in the last year of a 2 1/2-season contract that he signed with Inter Miami back in September 2020. The deal includes a team option for 2023, but Higuain could opt to call it a career this winter.

“Retirement is close, but it is not what I have in my head right now,” Higuain said. “What is in my head right now is fulfilling my contract, and then at the end of the year seeing how I feel. I will sit with the club then and we will see what is the best decision, but right now I am focused on trying to have a great season this year.”

Higuain and Inter Miami have not gotten off to a great start this year. The South Florida side is the worst team in MLS at this early stage in the campaign with an 0-1-4 record and has scored just three goals.

The star attacker has played a part in each of those tallies, netting twice and assisting on the other.

“I feel good right now,” Higuain said. “I just wanted to clear [these rumors] up because I did not want any more misunderstandings. I will be the first one to comment on it when the moment comes.”
