Major airport home to some of the world’s best beaches to welcome US flights later this month for the first time

It will connect to major airports in Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Miami, and Newark

A POPULAR travel destination will soon spread its wings and bring in American tourists to its new airport.

Visitors no longer have to make multiple travel arrangements to get to the Mexican city and can enjoy vacation festivities right from the start.

Traveling to Tulum, Mexico, is about to get a lot easier.

Previously, to get to the vacation hotspot, visitors from the United States had to fly into a separate airport and commute hours to the destination.

Starting this week, that's no longer the case.

Flights from the United States to the recently opened Tulum International Airport are open to the public starting tomorrow.

Visitors to the Mayan Riviera can say goodbye to the crowded halls of the Cancún airport and the long drive south in favor of the better option.

American Airlines and Delta Air Lines will be the first to undergo the new route on March 28, followed by United Airlines three days later.

The new routes will connect Tulum to major airports like Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Miami, and Newark.

More airlines are set to follow suit with Air Canada joining in May and JetBlue Airways and Copa Airlines in June.

ALTERNATIVE ACCESS

Last year, the Cancún airport was the most popular among American tourists.

A 2023 tourist activity report from Mexico’s tourism secretary showed nearly 4.8 million American visitors passed through it last year.

Because it's such a busy travel hotspot, airlines and travelers are looking for a less busy alternative.

“We’re pretty excited about some of the [travel] demand we’re seeing,” said Amy Martin, vice president of North America network planning at Delta.

ROUGH START

Although it's an exciting development product, it's far from finished.

Domestic flights began in December, but construction is still going on at the newly minted Tulum airport in the terminals and access road.

Flights are known to be delayed and there has been feedback that the booking system has been unreliable.

Despite this, many travelers are choosing to travel to that airport rather than to Cancún because ground transportation options are limited and costs are high.

It's a more affordable option in the long run to just fly into the incomplete airport.
