The best of Greece, without the touristy crowds? Here’s where I found the gems of Athens, Santorini and Crete

Trade the overrun sights for small-group food and wine tours and experiences.

Just down the way, the summer-hot streets of Plaka steam. In the historic Athens district, hordes of travellers have descended on the T-shirt shops and other touristy spots surrounding the soaring limestone hill that thrusts the Acropolis skyward.

But here, where I’m lunching, a few blocks up the road, in the neighbourhood of Psyri? Quite fresh, actually. Breezy, even, under a canopy of vines. The veggies still crisp on my Greek salad, a big block of feta atop it all, dripping with olive oil. Little pitchers of white wine from the Peloponnese, already poured. A million miles from the crush of Athens in high season. And yet, in the middle of it all.
