Background
NAV CANADA, in collaboration with the GTAA, has implemented a new approach procedure at Toronto Pearson. This procedure supports environmental sustainability and reduces noise impacts on communities in the Greater Toronto Area.
In late 2021, NAV CANADA launched a public consultation as part of this proposal to introduce airspace enhancements known as Required Navigation Performance - Authorization Required (RNP AR) for two runway ends at Toronto Pearson.
RNP AR provides the opportunity to design shorter, more direct arrival routes, enabling aircraft to turn towards the airport sooner. These procedures will support environmental sustainability efforts by significantly reducing greenhouse gases and the overflight of residential areas.
November 2022 Implementation
Based on the feedback from the 2021 consultation, and the anticipated benefits of RNP AR, NAV CANADA began implementing the procedure starting November 28, 2022. The implementation included some adjustments based on feedback that was received.
NAV CANADA anticipated a gradual and steady utilization of this innovative operation. When in use, residents can anticipate that some eligible aircraft will use the new procedures, which reduces flying time and greenhouse gases while leveraging quieter continuous descent operations.
As shared in consultation, some residents may observe changes to air traffic patterns:
- Northwest (Milton, Halton Hills, northwest Brampton and surrounding areas)
- Northeast (Vaughan, Caledon, Brampton and surrounding areas)
Over the long term, there will be opportunities to keep aircraft higher on the downwind, which brings benefits for communities southeast and southwest of the airport. Residents can learn more about RNP AR here.
