Naples International Airport (NAP) serves the city of Naples, Italy and the surrounding Campania region. It's also referred to as Capodichino Airport, for the area of Naples where it is built. Located about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) from central Naples, it is the largest airport in southern Italy. The single-terminal airport serves more than 10 million passengers a year, with flights arriving from within Italy and also from Europe, the U.K., Russia, and North Africa. There are some seasonal flights from Newark, New Jersey.

Thanks to its small size and close proximity to Naples, Naples International Airport is easy to reach and easy to navigate, and very convenient in terms of getting to central Naples.

Know Before You Go

Naples International Airport consists of one single terminal on two levels. The arrivals area is on the ground floor and departure gates are on the first floor (what Americans would consider the second floor). Baggage claim and ground transportation can be found on the ground floor. There are shopping and dining options on both levels, and both inside and outside of the secure area. Major commercial airlines that service Naples International Airport include Alitalia, Air France, British Airways, Lufthansa, and United Airlines. Low-cost carriers include Ryanair, EasyJet.

Parking

Naples International Airport has a range of parking lots, including short-term covered and uncovered areas, and both covered and uncovered long-term parking areas. All parking lots are within 4 minutes walk of the terminal.

Driving to the Airport

If you're driving to the airport from Naples, you'll head north out of the city until you reach the A56 (Viadotto Capodichino, also called the Tangenziale di Napoli) and take it ENE to the airport exit. If there's little to no traffic, the trip should take about 10 minutes. But given that traffic in Naples can be a nightmare, we'd allow for at least 30 minutes to reach the airport.

If you're driving to the airport from the direction of Sorrento or Salerno, you'll either take the A3/E45 motorway from Salerno, or pick it up at Pompeii (if you're coming from Sorrento). You'll continue on the E45 as it becomes the A1 (Autostrada del Sole). Exit the autostrada at the exit marked Aeroporto/Napoli Centrale/Tangenziale. This merges onto the A56, which takes you shortly to the airport exit.

Public Transportation and Taxis

Naples International Airport, located about 4 km from central Naples, provides a number of transportation options for getting into the city and reaching destinations on the Bay of Naples.

• Alibus: Alibus service runs from the airport to points in central Naples, including the main train station, Napoli Centrale (Piazza Garibaldi stop). The trip takes about 15 minutes and tickets are 5 euros one-way. The Alibus bus stand is located outside, about 50 meters from the terminal entrance—look for the bright orange and blue buses. Tickets should be purchased at the Alibus counter in the arrivals hall or at machines in the airport.
• Other buses: At the bus terminal located about 150 meters from the front of the airport, you can catch regional buses to Pompeii, Salerno, Sorrento, and the Amalfi Coast.
• Taxis: Taxis wait outside the airport to transport travelers into the city or surrounding area. There are set fares for destinations in the city. For transport to Napoli Centrale Station or the Centro Antico (the historic center), the flat fee is 18 euros for up to four passengers.

Airport Services

Standard facilities and services in Naples International Airport include a tourist information kiosk, a post office, a currency exchange, rental car and hotel reservation counters, luggage deposit, and a VIP lounge. ATMs (called bancomats in Italy) are scattered around the passenger terminal; most accept international bank cards, however, we recommend you check with your financial institution before departure.

There's also a hotel in the airport, the Capsule Hotel BenBo, which offers 42 small sleeping compartments with beds, TVs and charging stations, and 16 shared bathrooms.

What to Eat & Drink

There is a good selection of restaurants, cafes, and wine bars where you can grab a quick snack, a cocktail, or enjoy a leisurely sit-down meal. Many offer products from Naples and the Campania region, including, of course, traditional Neopolitan pizza!

Shopping

The non-secure area of the airport houses a handful of shops, ranging from sundries and a pharmacy to clothing and souvenirs. Past security, there are 24 stores. Most sell fashion but there are gift stores as well, including one selling buffalo mozzarella, a specialty of Campania.

Airport Lounges

There is one VIP lounge in the departures area. It's located on the second level and is open 5 p.m. to 11 p.m, daily. Alitalia's Tintoretto Lounge, located at Boarding Area for Schengen flights is open 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Entrance is free for priority club members; all others pay a one-time fee to access a lounge.

Wi-Fi & Charging Stations

Free Wi-Fi is available anywhere in the passenger terminal, with charging stations placed strategically so you'll always be able to juice up your smartphone or other mobile devices.

Tips & Facts

• Arriving international passengers must go through customs and passport control. Visitors arriving from within the European Union don't need to pass through customs.
• Other than in the hotel (see above), sleeping inside the airport is strictly prohibited. The terminal is closed between 11:30 p.m. and 3:30 a.m.
