Regent Aircraft Services Retrieval and Rebuild of MSN 455

The rebuilding of MSN 455 was completed earlier this year, with the aircraft delivered to the customer and now in service.

The entire aircraft history can be seen at https://www.twinotterworld.com/msn-455 . Delivered originally to Management Jets International in Jun-1975, it went to Nepal in Feb-1977 with Royal Nepal Airlines. In the subsequent years it remained parked for close to ten years, returning to service in 2012 with Tara Air.

An accident at Simkot, Nepal on 28-Nov-2017 took the aircraft out of service again, and it remained there until it was sling loaded out via helicopter about ten months later. From there it was shipped via container to Regent Aircraft Services in Calgary to be rebuilt.

• Regent Aircraft Services completed the full rebuild during 2018/2019, including:

• Complete re-wire in partnership with Aerocorp Avionics

• Full Garmin GN950 glass cockpit avionics suite, including STEC autopilot

• Aeroplastics/Unity brand new interior and sidewalls

• All factory inspections.

The selection of images below depict the recovery project in Nepal and the rebuilding back at Regent’s facilities at Calgary, AB.

This is the first of what is expected to be several aircraft to be completed in partnership between Regent Aircraft Services and Harbour Air.

After having been parked at either Calgary or Victoria since the beginning of 2017, C-FMVQ received Royal Thai Police livery by 17-May-2020, as seen in the photo below. It was delivered Victoria, BC - Hillsboro, OR - Murrieta, CA 20-May-2020 for completion work with Ikhana. The delivery flight was undertaken by World Wide Ferry Ltd.

Although it retains the long standing Thai Police deep burgundy and white colours, the new livery matches the Falcon 2000S 33742, which can be seen in the photo below the Twin Otter.

Collided with U.S.M.C. V-22 Osprey at San Diego-Brown Field, CA 30-May-2020.

The damage to the Twin Otter is indicated as substantial, while the Osprey sustained $2 million. Following a period of maintenance, the aircraft was started in preparation for departure back to base at Jamul, CA. Prior to taxi the aircraft rolled forward and collided with the U.S.M.C. V-22 Osprey.

N52FW had previously flown for Kapowsin Air Sports for 28 years before moving to southern California in 2019 when Kapowsin acquired MSN 88 N669JW.

Twin Otter World Congratulates Rocky Mountain Aircraft on their new Springbank facility

Thinking back to my early visits out to Springbank, the comparison of the first facility to now is pretty amazing. Congratulations to the Stevenson’s and their team in the opening of the newest hangar facilities at Springbank.

Construction of the new hangar, built by Bird, took approximately 14 months from ground-breaking to receiving the occupancy certificate. The building offers 19,000 square feet, with 15,000 square feet of free span. As you can see in the photo below, it is located immediately to the SE of the existing hangar.

The aircraft continued on to Kuala Lumpur-Subang - Denpasar - Darwin, NT - Cairns, QLD - Nouméa 23/26-Jul-2020 following maintenance in Switzerland.

836 - DHC-6-300 C-GDCZ Gravitas Aviation Ltd., West Vancouver, BC

Although not yet reflected on the CCAR, C-GDCZ has been acquired by Rocky Mountain Aircraft in Springbank. The aircraft was transported to Canada via sea container from Saudi Arabia, where it had been since 1988, having amassed only 1,100 hours in 32 years. It will be overhauled & refurbished, including upgraded avionics before eventual sale.

Departed Springbank, AB 17-Aug-2020 on delivery to the Royal Thai Police. Flown by Worldwide Ferry, the aircraft routed Springbank, AB - Saskatoon, SK - Thompson, MB - Iqaluit, NU - Keflavík 17/18-Aug-2020. The aircraft is seen below parked beside the new Rocky Mountain Aircraft hangar at Springbank, with thanks to ferry pilot Garth Vickery.

A bit of catch up with this one, with thanks to Dave B for pointing it out. U.S. registration was cancelled 19-Jan-2020 on export to the Turks & Caicos. Since that time it has been flying regularly within the Islands as VQ-TWG with InterCaribbean. On 10-Aug-2020 it flew Providenciales - Nassau - Fort Lauderdale-Executive, FL, and is seen below yesterday, 27-Aug-2020.

Interesting side note that this aircraft carried the same U.S. registration for fifty years until moving to the Turks & Caicos register. It was originally delivered to Alaska Airlines in 1969.

As a matter of interest, MSN 119 has had a fairly, let’s say, colourful history. Having started life in southern California, it went on to missionary work in Africa by 1983. By 1985 it was with Grecoair, flying under the banner of Saint Lucia Airways (a CIA proprietary airline). By 1996 it was back in Africa, again flying for a variety of affiliated David Tokoph’s Grecoair operations .

Jumping ahead to 2012, it arrived in Altenrhein/Saint Gallen for a complete from the ground up rebuild, emerging basically as a factory fresh -300 series equivalent. Returning to the U.S.A. the aircraft remained privately operated from 2012 to 2020, splitting its time between the Italian owners homes in Florida and Montana. It had been for sale since the owners returned to Switzerland themselves.

The aircraft was destined for Manta Air in the Maldives, however has now become available for lease/sale by contacting Rocky Mountain Aircraft. This will mark the return to service of MSN 367 after having been on the ground since 2011, and subsequently rebuilt.

R.C.A.F. TWIN OTTER 13803 RECOVERY FROM SEA ICE

On March 11, a Royal Canadian Air Force CC-138 Twin Otter from 440 Squadron was damaged during a landing on sea ice north of #Inuvik. To get it home, the #RCAF contracted from a specialist company to airlift it back to Inuvik. With Canadian Rangers providing protection from predators, RCAF technicians removed all fuel, non-essential parts and equipment from the Twin Otter to prepare it for airlift. On March 24, a Sikorsky heavy-lift helicopter contracted through Momentum Decisive Solutions Inc. and sub-contractor VIH Helicopters successfully airlifted the Twin Otter back to Inuvik with a specialized sling.

The aircraft doesn’t appear to have flown since 21-Sep-2020, however there are multiple occasions when it was operational, or powered up between 21-Sep-2020 and 04-Oct-2020. The last instance of that was on 04-Oct-2020.

Russia Continues Set-Up of Taiga Brand in Far East Regions

With thanks to reporting from the Aerotime Hub, with a byline of Valius Venckunas, a bit more information has now become available on the new operator Taiga in the Russian Federation.

In a bid to consolidate several existing operators in the Russian far east, the local governments have agreed to the organization and legalities to form the Union of Regional Carriers. Each carrier will fly under a single Taiga brand, and the route structure has been agreed upon, according to a press release from the Government of Sakhalin.

The core of the Union of Regional Carriers comes from the helicopter company Aviashelf, with other companies to join in due course. Who they will be is yet to be determined. Aviashelf was, until Jun-2019 a subsidiary of Bristow Group.

As a matter of interest, the name Taiga is not new, it was originally selected as the brand for Aeroflot’s far east subsidiary, which ultimately became Aurora.

In any event, the attractive branding of Taiga will compliment pretty well any aircraft it is carried on.

Lenders Take Control of troubled Trans Maldivian Airways

On 24-Sep-2020, lenders to Bain Capital Corporation, parent company of Trans Maldivian Airways, announced their intent to seek control of the airline, and recovery of their investments. Trans Maldivian had previously missed a $6.8 million amortization payment, and had entered into a standstill agreement with the lenders.

The lenders include Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Carlyle, Davidson Kempner Capital Management, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, King Street Capital Management, and Sculptor Capital Management.

Trans Maldivian was acquired by a consortium led by Bain Capital and Tempus Global in 2017.

Built specifically to meet the requirements of the end user in Panama, the aircraft was brought to Regent in Calgary following their pre-buy inspection in Saskatchewan. While at their facility the aircraft received a new interior, utilizing Regent’s STC leather seats in custom colour, a KBA headliner, and sidewalls from Unity Aviation.

MSN 272 will be used privately by the luxury Islas Secas eco-resort which is located on a 14 island archipelago in the Gulf of ChiriquI. Islas Secas is owned by American billionaire conservationist Louis Bacon, who was also responsible for New Mexico's Taos Ski Valley, Trinchera Ranch in Colorado and Tordrillo Mountain Lodge in Alaska.

The Twin Otter is expected to operate from Panama City’s Tocumen International Airport beginning next month. Previously, flights had been operated by a Turbine DHC-3 Otter HP-1870, which has since been moved to the owners Todrillo Lodge in Alaska as N116TL.

The containers are destined for Regent Aircraft Services and Texas Air Services who will be responsible for repair and overhaul of flight control services. The balance of the aircraft will either be fully repaired, or alternatively further dismantled for parts.

DU-SD4 had been with Skydive Dubai since Dec-2011, and was involved in a runway excursion accident at Dubai Marina on 02-Oct-2015. It had been on the ground there since the accident.

Test flown from Sion 02-Dec-2020 following lengthy storage. The aircraft is expected to depart Switzerland shortly on delivery to SKS Airways in Malaysia.

Flew Sion - Nis 14-Dec-2020 The flight is being operated by World Wide Ferry of Calgary.

270 - DHC-6-300 8Q-TMR Trans Maldivian Airways, Male

Collided with vessel Sun Cruise 9 after landing at Sun Siyam Iru Fushi, Maldives 22-Oct-2020. The aircraft began producing asymmetric thrust while using reverse, and directional control was unable to be regained prior to the collision. 8Q-TMR sustained damage to the left engine and wing; it had come out of an EMMA check 4 on 20-Oct-2020 which had included various engine inspections and tasks. Upon completion of the check, some engine parameters had remained out of limits, with no record of rectification.

389 - DHC-6-300 P2-ASM Air Sanga Ltd., Port Moresby

Damaged as a result of runway excursion on landing at Wobagen, PNG 01-Dec-2020. The nose gear failed during the excursion, and there was one injury among the passengers.

The airstrip at Wobagen is 600m in length, with an 8 degree downslope.

657 - DHC-6-300 8Q-TMF Trans Maldivian Airways, Male [Seaplane Holding Cayman Ltd.]

Updating previous entries; immediately after initial touch down on the “North Right” water runway at Male the aircraft rolled approximately 60 degrees to the right. As a result, the right wing dug into the water and swung the aircraft 180 degrees. On completion of the u-turn, the left wing and propeller blades then received damage as they settled and struck the water.

948 - DHC-6-400 RA-67297 SKOL Airlines, Krasnoyarsk [RN Aerocraft LLC]

Runway excursion on landing at Krasnoyarsk-Cheremshanka, Russia 04-Dec-2020. The aircraft travelled some 30m from the runway before coming to a stop, as can be seen below.
