RARE pair of Opera Callas SP floorstanding loudspeakers in gorgeous sappele finish. SP is for Super Pavarotti which is a an Opera cabinet design, scaled down here. These little overachievers were used here for several months, until one of the Peerless woofers gave up and became noisy. These woofers were made especially for Opera by Peerless, and the exact replacement is no longer available. I replaced both drivers with Tang Bang W4-1849 reed cone full range drivers as you can see in the photos. The speakers sound even better than they did before, and IMHO the Tang Bang drivers made a nice improvement on overall sound quality. When you walk into the room with these speakers playing, you expect to see much larger speakers. They impress with large scale, lifelike sound that is extremely refined and resolving of complex music…especially when used with the best quality equipment. They have the ability to disappear in the room and leave you with nothing but music.

The 27mm MuRata silk dome tweeter is at work here and is widely known as a great tweeter. There is also rear firing Morel tweeter for improving spacial imaging. The remaining 4.5” drivers in the middle are original to the speakers and were part of the original special production run/build by Peerless, especially for Opera and specifically for this speaker.

A serious speaker one could mistake for just average pretty easily because of their size, and price here, but they play bigger than many larger floorstanders that have come through over the years and sound classy doing it. Solid, high quality build, best materials, top quality binding posts, leather wrapped front baffle!, and boutique level devices in the crossover networks also play a role in the great sound.
