Donald Trump’s appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show in September came at the end of what some considered a much too easy week of television appearances for the candidate. After breezing past Dr. Oz and Matt Lauer, Trump’s buddy-buddy interview with Fallon seemed too sunshine and rainbows for one of the most controversial candidates in election history. Fallon bore the brunt of the abuse when the Internet outrage hit, but his former Saturday Night Live colleague Tina Fey came to his defense this weekend while speaking at a Producers Guild of America event in New York.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fey said she didn’t think the response was fair. “This election is so, so ugly, it’s not business as usual,” she said. “I really felt for Jimmy when people were so angry. It’s not Jimmy who peed in that punch bowl, it’s not Jimmy who created this horrible world that we’re currently living in.”

True, Fallon isn’t the one running for president, he’s simply a late-night host who is never too hard on his guests. He said so himself after the Emmys, when TMZ asked him about the backlash: “I mean, have you seen my show?”

He has since attempted some forms of damage control, most recently on an episode of SNL, where he appeared with Fey as two undecided voters from Pennsylvania. When Fallon, as “Doreene” claimed not to like either candidate, Tina’s “Denise” leaned over to muss his hair, saying, “Whatever, you love Trump... Everyone thinks you love Trump!” Fallon responded, “I said it one time. Get off my bra strap, cool police.”

Even Fey knows how stressful this election season has been, saying that she thinks everyone is probably experiencing “election-related weight gain.” She said, “I feel like that’s gonna be a thing. ‘I gained eight pounds between the two debates!’”
