A Brazilian documentary is nominated for an Oscar. President Bolsonaro hates it.

RIO DE JANEIRO — To the left, she's an intrepid truth teller. To the right, she's a liar — possibly, an outright criminal. To the Oscars, she might just be the best documentarian of 2019.

It’s another round of political polarization in Latin America’s largest country, and this time the central character is the filmmaker Petra Costa. At issue is her documentary “The Edge of Democracy” and its portrayal of the divisive events surrounding the removal of one Brazilian president, the imprisoning of another and the ascent of a third: nationalist Jair Bolsonaro.
