This airport once had a regular service to Sydney (I caught an East West Airlines Fokker Friendship flight to Sydney from here in 1971) however the population of Glen Innes & surrounding districts was unable to support an ongoing service. It now relies on personal aircraft & agri businesses for survival.

Wikipedia (visit link) says of the future of the airport:

The airport is going under a major development with Glen Innes Regional Airport Pty Ltd committed to the construction of a 600-student resident commercial aviation college. The school will prepare both Australian and international students to graduate "airline ready" with full CASA licenses, up to Multi Engine crew and instrument rating.
