Vancouver International Airport (YVR) 

has been ranked the best airport in North 

America for the second year in a row by 

millions of the most discerning judges: 

travellers. 

YVR was honoured with the prestigious 

designation as part of the 2011 Skytrax 

World Airport Awards—an independent 

and highly regarded survey which ranks 

airports worldwide—held March 30 at the 

Passenger Terminal Expo in Copenhagen, 

Denmark. 

“This award has special meaning to 

YVR since it signifies that our quest for 

excellence is recognized by the millions 

of travellers who use our facilities every 

year,” said Larry Berg, president and CEO, 

Vancouver Airport Authority. “Pivotal to

The Skytrax survey was completed by 

more than 11.38-million travellers from 100 

countries around the globe. Respondents 

were asked to rate airports on 39 different 

criteria including cleanliness, design 

and layout, retail facilities, clarity of flight 

information and signs, luggage handling 

and transportation. 

In 2010, YVR passengers benefited 

from the new facilities and services put in 

place in preparation for the 2010 Winter 

Games, including the Canada Line rapid

Hope Without Borders initiative 

supports Japan’s relief efforts 

Soil liquefaction was evident in areas of reclaimed land around Tokyo as a result of 

Japan’s earthquake. The Japanese government has said the cost of the earthquake and 

subsequent tsunami could reach $309-billion, making it the world’s most expensive 

natural disaster on record. 

ICE International Currency Exchange 

and the team from Payline FX have combined 

forces to collaborate on a fundraising 

initiative that will span Canada, from coast 

to coast. 

Launching on Monday, April 11, Hope 

Without Borders will offer Canadians and 

the travelling public the opportunity to give 

their support, no matter how small, by donating 

funds in any currency at any one of more 

than 85 ICE Currency locations throughout 

Canada. The goal is to raise $25,000 for the 

Japan earthquake relief efforts. 

One hundred per cent of proceeds 

collected will be donated directly to the 

Japan Red Cross Society by Payline FX, 

a BC-based international payment brokerage, 

with all administration and wire fees 

waived. 

Headquartered at YVR, ICE’s 35-year 

history as one of the most respected retail 

foreign currency exchange brands in the 

world now includes more than 320 branches 

in 20 countries, including more than 65 

airports. 

“We are not only global businesses, 

we are global citizens,” said Koko Sarkari, 

director of global operations for ICE. “Our 

organizations were moved beyond words by 

the devastating events in Japan, following 

the earthquake and tsunami on March 11.” 

Through this cross-country campaign, 

ICE is hopeful that many of its retail partners 

across the country will place provided 

donation boxes at their retail operations, to 

give more people opportunities to donate. 

“As members of the Canadian airport 

community, we have reached out to our fellow 

retailers and anticipate their strong support,” 

said Dan Northam, ICE International 

Currency Exchange’s director of compliance. 

“With more than 160 retail locations 

within the Vancouver International Airport 

alone, we have a unique opportunity to pool 

our resources.” 

To kickstart the Hope Without Borders 

campaign, Payline FX will match the first 

$1,000 in donations made. 

“With clients and employees from 

Japan, we wanted to do our part to make 

a difference,” said Paul Rechner, president 

of Payline FX. “We have fielded a number 

of calls since the earthquakes from people 

asking for our help to remit their donations 

directly to the Japan Red Cross Society. 

We are happy to use our payment systems 

to give Canadians an alternative option 

for their donations. Our collaboration with 

ICE also gives us access to reach out to 

Canadians across the country through ICE’s 

numerous retail locations.” 

With retail locations at many of 

Canada’s major international airports 

including Vancouver, Victoria, Montreal, 

Ottawa, Toronto and Quebec City, the 

Hope Without Borders campaign has a 

wide reach. 

The campaign is expected to run until 

August 2011 in recognition that Japan will 

face a long road to recovery.

Clear Skies Awards 

Last year, CARA Airline Solutions was presented with a YVR Clear Skies Award by Anne 

Murray, Vancouver Airport Authority vice-president of community and environmental 

affairs, for its improvements in environmental performance that included a 17 per cent 

reduction in fuel consumption. 

Vancouver Airport Authority is 

encouraging YVR businesses that have 

demonstrated outstanding environmental 

achievements to apply for its second-annual 

Clear Skies Awards. 

Launched during Environment Week 

2009, the Clear Skies Awards bring the airport 

community together to celebrate and promote 

environmental sustainability. From reducing 

fuel consumption and using alternative fuels 

to recycling food packaging and increasing 

energy efficiency, many Sea Island companies 

are doing their part to go green at YVR. 

Last year’s winners included Cathay 

Pacific, for its purchase of a fully electric 

operations vehicle; Little Wings Daycare,

Hawkair 

makes a move 

For more than 10 years, Terrace, 

B.C.-based airline Hawkair has been connecting 

passengers to northern British 

Columbian communities through daily 

scheduled service out of YVR’s South 

Terminal. 

That service from the South Terminal 

has now changed as Hawkair moved 

its operations to YVR’s Main Domestic 

Terminal earlier this month. 

The move follows a change in designation 

by the Canadian Transportation 

Agency. With its new medium category 

licence, Hawkair will operate two 50-seat 

DeHavilland Dash 8-300 aircraft and two 

37-seat Dash 8-100s to its network of B.C. 

destinations including Terrace/Kitimat, 

Prince Rupert and Smithers. 

In addition to its scheduled service, the 

airline offers charter service throughout 

British Columbia and Alberta, supporting 

the mining and resource-based industries 

that gave the airline its start in 1994. 

Travellers looking to explore northern 

B.C.’s legendary outdoor pursuits can 

connect to sport fishing and heli-skiing 

lodges through Hawkair charters. 

Passengers travelling with Hawkair 

out of YVR’s Main Domestic Terminal 

will continue to enjoy the airline’s excellent

the mountain in support 

of adaptive snow sports 

Vancouver Airport Authority employees 

took to the mountain last month as part 

of the 4 th annual Vancouver Adaptive Snow 

Sports (VASS) Corporate Challenge Cup. 

A sponsor of this event since its inception 

through the Community Investment 

program, Airport Authority employees 

participate in the annual corporate challenge 

dual-slalom race hosted by Grouse 

Mountain in celebration of sports and 

accessibility. 

Corporate teams of skiers and boarders 

along with VASS volunteers are matched 

with a VASS student for a fun race. The 

goal is to raise awareness of VASS, an 

organization which provides snow sport

offered for snowboarding, sit-ski, stand-up 

skiing and advanced adaptive ski racing.

will distribute more than $650,000 to

Travellers through the YVR-subsidiary 

airport in Nassau, Bahamas are enjoying 

a brand new, state-of-the-art U.S. terminal—the 

first landmark of a three-stage 

$409-million redevelopment of Lynden

Emergency preparedness at YVR 

The catastrophic earthquake and tsunami 

that hit Japan in early March has prompted 

many people and businesses on the West Coast 

of Canada to evaluate their own emergency 

plans and preparations in the face of a potential 

natural disaster. 

The safety and security of YVR’s passengers 

and some 23,000 employees is the 

Airport Authority’s primary responsibility— 

during both regular operations and in times of 

crisis. YVR’s emergency management plan 

focuses on three principles—prevent, prepare 

and practice—and is designed to respond to 

a number of emergencies, including potential 

earthquakes and floods. 

Because every natural disaster brings its 

own unique set of circumstances, it is difficult 

to speculate on the impact of an earthquake 

to YVR’s operations. However, the Airport 

Authority’s comprehensive emergency management 

plan would allow YVR to carry 

out a unified response with other emergency 

management agencies and care for passengers 

and employees on Sea Island. 

YVR’s buildings, bridges and infrastructure 

are seismically sound; many facilities are 

new and those built before 1992 have been 

upgraded to exceed current seismic codes. In 

fact, YVR’s Control Tower is built to remain 

independently functional after a significant 

earthquake to serve as a recovery centre to 

support the community at large. YVR’s dyke 

system has also been upgraded over the past 

15 years and could withstand significant tides. 

Emergency supply cabinets are found throughout 

the terminal facilities, and a comprehensive 

terminal evacuation plan further ensures 

the safety of YVR passengers and employees. 

The Airport Authority also works closely 

with regional emergency responders stationed 

at or near Sea Island, including Richmond 

Fire-Rescue and the Canadian Coast Guard. 

These relationships, fostered through ongoing 

communication and regular emergency 

exercises, would help ensure a coordinated 

response. In the event of a major natural 

disaster, YVR would likely operate as a hub 

for incoming aid and supplies to support the 

community beyond Sea Island. 

The Airport Authority’s emergency 

management plan is assessed and refined on 

an ongoing basis to incorporate knowledge 

gained through real-life and simulated emergency 

situations, and the latest developments 

in airport safety and emergency. And because 

a plan is only as good as its execution, practicing 

with live scenario training, emergency 

simulations and table-top exercises is essential 

to ensuring the continued safety of YVR’s passengers 

and employees. 

Make an emergency preparedness kit 

The Red Cross recommends that you 

keep a disaster preparedness kit in your 

home with enough supplies to meet your 

family’s needs for at least 72 hours. 

Store the following supplies together 

in sturdy, easy-to-carry containers such as 

suitcases on wheels or backpacks in case 

you need to evacuate your home: 

• Water—Store two litres of drinking water 

and two litres of water for washing per 

person, per day, keeping a 72-hour supply 

on hand for your family and pets. Listen 

to public announcements about treating 

the water in your area after a disaster. 

Once per year, make use of your water 

supply and add fresh water to your kit. 

• Food—Store at least a 72-hour supply 

of non-perishable food for each person. 

Select foods that are non-perishable 

and require no refrigeration, cooking, 

or added water. Once per year, check 

the expiration dates. Ensure that there is 

enough for each family member. 

• Manual can opener 

• Crank or battery-operated flashlight and 

radio, with extra batteries 

• Extra keys, for house and car 

• First aid kit 

• Cash in small bills 

• Special needs items—medications, baby 

formula and diapers, and equipment for 

people with disabilities. 

• Copy of your emergency plan.

• Change of clothing and footwear for each 

person 

• Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each 

person 

• Pet food and pet medication 

• Garbage bags and twist ties 

• Toilet paper

Airbus to launch A320neo earlier than scheduled 

Airbus is advancing the delivery date 

of the new version of its A320 passenger 

aircraft—the A320neo—by six months. 

The aircraft was originally scheduled 

to enter service in 2016, but with orders 

already in excess of 300, Airbus is now 

planning an October 2015 delivery date. 

“The exceptional market demand for 

the A320neo Family as airlines recognize 

the operational, economic and environmental 

advantages which the neo will 

deliver, has encouraged us to advance 

the entry into service date to October 

2015,” said John Leahy, Airbus’ CEO, 

customers. 

The A320neo incorporates new more 

efficient engines and large Sharklet wingtip 

devices, which together will deliver up 

to 15 per cent in fuel savings. This will 

represent some 3,600 tonnes less carbon 

dioxide per aircraft, per year. 

In addition, the A320neo will provide 

a double-digit reduction in nitric 

oxide and nitrogen dioxide emissions and 

reduced engine noise, thus being a good 

neighbour at any airport where airlines

Air Canada’s Boeing 787 

delivery schedule delayed 

Boeing has informed Air Canada that 

the first five deliveries of the new 787 

Dreamliner aircraft, previously scheduled 

to be delivered in the second half of 2013, 

are now targeted for delivery during Q4, 

2013, and the first half of 2014. 

This represents an average delay of 

five and seven months from the previous 

schedule. 

Boeing will continue to evaluate the 

schedule for deliveries of Air Canada’s 

remaining 32 orders for Boeing 787 aircraft 

and provide Air Canada with an 

update when available. 

The 787 Dreamliner is a long-range, 

mid-size, wide-body, twin-engine jet airliner 

that seats 210 to 330 passengers, 

depending on the variant. 

Announced in 2003 as a successor 

to the 767 and an alternative to the 

Airbus A330, Boeing has struggled with 

more than three years of delays on the 

Dreamliner. Parts shortages, manufacturing 

defects, incomplete work by suppliers 

and redesigns have all contributed to the 

delays, forcing Boeing to pay penalties to 

airlines that were counting on the plane to 

service new routes. 

United celebrates with 

retro Friend Ship livery 

United Airlines commemorates its 85th 

anniversary earlier this month by unveiling 

an aircraft painted in the airline’s 1970s-era 

Friend Ship livery, which features stripes 

of deep red and sky blue and a regal star 

pattern, from United’s historical liveries. 

Ironically, given that Airbus’ rival, 

Boeing, once owned United, the aircraft 

used in the celebration was an Airbus 

A320. 

History 

United’s history began on April 6, 

1926, when a small Swallow biplane 

owned by Walter Varney completed the 

first airmail delivery, landing to cheering 

crowds in Nevada after a flight across 

a harsh, mountainous route. While other 

aviation legends saw air travel as a challenge 

and a sport to be conquered, Varney 

was among the first to recognize its business 

potential. 

Varney then founded Varney Air 

Service in 1926 after acquiring an airmail 

contract. He later sold the company 

to United Aircraft and Transport, which 

would change its name to United Air Lines 

in 1933. 

In 1934, Varney and business partner 

Louis Mueller founded Varney Speed Lines. 

Boeing, meanwhile, created Boeing 

Air Transport in June 1927, before changing 

the name to United Aircraft and 

Transportation in 1929. On March 28, 

1931, Boeing combined the company with 

National Air Transport, Varney Airlines 

and Pacific Air Transport to create United 

Air Lines. 

On Sept. 28, 1934, United Aircraft and 

Transport divided into United Aircraft, 

Boeing Airplane and United Air Lines. 

That same year, Varney and Mueller 

sold Varney Speed Lines, which was then 

renamed Continental Airlines in 1937. 

In May 2010, United and Continental 

merged to become the world’s biggest 

carrier. 

Flying then and now 

In 1930, Boeing’s tri-motored Model 

80 carried up to 18 people in an enclosed 

cabin—a step up from only a few years 

earlier when two passengers rode on top of 

mailbags, wearing parachutes and goggles. 

In 1936, people could fly coast to coast, 

allowing at least 20 hours for the trip, but 

generally bought tickets at the door of the 

plane just before takeoff. 

By comparison, the combined 

Continental/United airline flies more than 

150-million customers each year, equal 

to about half the population of the U.S., 

and travellers can book flights from virtually 

anywhere. United’s largest aircraft, the 

747-400, seats 374 travellers, offering flatbed 

seats, personal inflight entertainment 

and hot meals. 

United flies a mix of Boeing and 

Airbus single-aisle airliners, and though its 

wide-body aircraft are all Boeings, United 

has ordered 25 Airbus A350 XWBs. 

Continental flies an all-Boeing fleet.

Helijet launches air services 

from Prince Rupert 

Richmond-based Helijet continues to 

expand its helicopter charter and air ambulance 

services along British Columbia’s 

north coast and has opened a Prince Rupert 

base at Seal Cove. 

The Prince Rupert base will be overseen 

by Steve Morrow and Andrew Scott. 

Morrow will oversee air medical operations 

and Scott will develop Helijet’s general 

charter business. 

“We’re proud to develop Prince 

Rupert as a base of operations, and look 

forward to becoming an integral part of 

the city’s business and tourism community,” 

said Danny Sitnam, president and 

CEO of Helijet. 

Helijet’s air medical service will operate 

a twin-engine Sikorsky S-76 helicopter 

under an exclusive eight-year contract to 

the BC Ambulance Service, 24 hours a 

day, seven days a week. A team of 12 

highly trained professionals of flight crew 

and maintenance engineers is required to 

keep the helicopter mission ready to fly at 

a moment’s notice. 

Helijet has been under contract with the 

BC Ambulance Service for more than 12 

years, operating two dedicated helicopters 

based in Vancouver, and also providing 

Lear-31 fixed-wing jet aircraft for more 

than five years. 

Helijet will also offer general charter 

helicopter air services for the numerous 

business sectors in the surrounding community, 

as well as sightseeing tours for 

local residents and tourists. 

Helijet is a Canadian-owned company 

and is North America’s largest scheduled 

helicopter service, carrying more than 

1.9-million passengers in the past 24 years. 

In addition to its scheduled and charter 

services, Helijet is a major service provider 

of dedicated medically equipped helicopters 

and turbojet aircraft for the Province of 

British Columbia and numerous medical 

service clients. 

Canadian transportation 

history up for bids 

For more than 40 years the Canadian 

Snowbirds Demonstration Team, flying 

the venerable Canadian-built CT-114 

Tutor Jet aircraft, has entertained millions 

of air show spectators as international 

ambassadors for Canada. 

The CT-114 twin-seat aerobatic trainers 

were built in the mid-sixties for the 

Royal Canadian Air Force by Montrealbased 

Canadair (now Bombardier) and 

adopted by the Canadian Forces Snowbirds 

team in 1971. 

Along with other historical vehicles, 

one of these original CT-114 aircraft 

will be offered for sale this month at the 

annual Classic Car Auction of Toronto in 

Mississauga, Ontario. 

Flown by the Snowbirds team in the 

1990s, this classic aircraft retains its original 

patriotic colours, cockpit instruments, 

controls and ejection seats. 

Since being retired from service, the 

aircraft is expected to become a candidate 

for restoration or a historical museum 

display. An extensive collection of documentation 

including log books, complete 

maintenance and service records will 

accompany the sale. 

The iconic aircraft is one of only 

four CT-114 jets under private ownership, 

presenting a rare opportunity for 

collectors or museums to acquire an 

important milestone of Canadian aviation 

history.

Demonstration Team, is up for sale. 


WestJet and 

American 

Airlines 

begin their 

partnership 

American Airlines and WestJet have 

begun their codeshare agreement that will 

give customers of both airlines more choices 

and greater connectivity when travelling 

between Canada and the U.S., as well as 

across American’s worldwide network. 

This codeshare allows American to 

place its AA code on WestJet flights, and 

WestJet to place its WS code on flights of 

American Airlines. 

By placing the WS code on American’s 

flights, WestJet will be offering its guests 

service to more than 30 new American 

U.S destinations. WestJet will add these 

codeshare routes in phases, starting with 

the WS code on American flights to Dallas/ 

Fort Worth and Los Angeles via Toronto, 

with expanded service throughout the 

American Airlines network expected in the 

near future. 

The codeshare agreement will also 

make it easier and more convenient for 

customers to connect from WestJet to 

American’s global route network and from 

American to WestJet’s Canadian cities. 

Members of the American Airlines 

AAdvantage program and WestJet’s 

Frequent Guest Program can now earn 

miles or rewards on the codeshare flights. 

The two airlines are also exploring 

other ways to augment their cooperation 

in the future.

agreement with Expedia to restore the 

online travel company’s access to its 

fares and schedule information. 

In January, Expedia dropped tickets for 

American Airlines from its listings, charging 

that the airline’s new commercial strategy 

was “anti-consumer” and “anti-choice.” 

American Airlines had introduced a 

system requiring agencies such as Expedia 

and Orbitz to sell the airline’s tickets using

Maple syrup rich in 

beneficial compounds 

Last month, at the 241st American 

Chemical Society’s National Meeting in 

Anaheim, California, a U.S. researcher said 

she has discovered 34 new beneficial compounds 

in pure Canadian maple syrup—five 

of which have never been seen in nature. 

Navindra Seeram of the University of 

Rhode Island also confirmed that 20 maple 

syrup compounds she discovered last year 

in preliminary research play a key role in 

human health. 

“I continue to say that nature is the best 

chemist, and that maple syrup is becoming 

a champion food when it comes to the number 

and variety of beneficial compounds 

found in it,” said Seeram. “It’s important 

to note that in our laboratory research 

we found that several of these compounds 

possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory 

properties, which have been shown to fight 

cancer, diabetes and bacterial illnesses.” 

Seeram and Chong Lee, a professor 

of nutrition and food sciences at the 

Maple Chicken 

University of Rhode Island’s College of 

the Environment and Life Sciences, found 

maple syrup phenolics—the beneficial antioxidant 

compounds—inhibit two carbohydrate 

hydrolyzing enzymes that are relevant 

to type 2 diabetes. 

Among the five new compounds is 

Quebecol, a compound created when the 

Maple tree sap is boiled to create syrup. 

“Quebecol has a unique chemical structure 

or skeleton never before identified in 

nature,” Seeram said. “There is beneficial 

and interesting chemistry going on when 

the boiling process occurs. I believe the heat 

forms this unique compound.” 

First Nations’ peoples were the first 

to discover sinzibuckwud, the Algonquin 

word for maple syrup, which means literally 

“drawn from wood.” They quickly 

recognized the sap as a source of energy 

and nutrition and made it into a crude type 

of sugar. It was drunk as a sweet drink or 

used in cooking. 

While production methods have been 

streamlined and modernized, the process 

of making maple syrup remains basically 

the same. The sap must be collected and 

distilled carefully to produce natural totally 

pure syrup that is free of chemical agents 

or preservatives—the sugar content of sap 

averages 2.5 per cent while the sugar content 

of syrup averages 66.5 percent. 

Ontario is the fourth largest maple 

syrup producer in the world after Quebec, 

Vermont, and New York State. 

So before you leave YVR, pick up a 

bottle or two of this most Canadian of food 

products. Not only is it an excellent source 

of manganese and a good source of zinc, but 

it has fewer calories and a higher concentration 

of minerals than honey.

Ingredients 

1 kg chicken pieces 

75 ml all-purpose flour 

50 ml vegetable oil 

125 ml maple syrup 

30 ml cider vinegar 

30 ml sherry 

30 ml soya sauce 

10 ml ground ginger 

2 cloves garlic, minced 

2 ml pepper 

1 ml paprika 

Method 

Coat chicken pieces well with flour. 

In large nonstick fry pan, add vegetable oil. 

Cook for 5 minutes, browning well, turn often. 

Arrange in 22 x 30-centimetre baking dish. 

In small bowl, mix together maple syrup, vinegar, sherry, 

soya sauce, ginger, garlic, pepper and paprika. 

Pour over chicken evenly. 

Bake at 175°C for 45 minutes to 1 hour, 

turning once during baking. 

Cover with foil, if browning too quickly. 

Garnish with freshly chopped parsley.

The 109-year-old carriage in which 

Prince William and Kate will journey to 

Buckingham Palace after their nuptials. 

As the countdown begins for the wedding 

of Prince William and Kate Middleton 

this month, Visit London, the capital 

city’s tourism body, predicts that an extra 

600,000 tourists will flock to London on 

the day of the wedding, pushing the number 

of visitors up to 1.1 million compared 

to a normal day. 

This month, Royal Wedding 2011 

events will take place throughout London, 

and will include festivities such as a wedding 

kick-off party in Trafalgar Square 

for St George’s Day on April 23, 2011. 

Costing more than $156,000, the event will 

feature concerts by star performers and 

west end musical actors, as well as young 

local musicians. 

Another major event that will take 

place in London in the run-up to William 

and Kate’s wedding is the 60th anniversary 

of the Festival of Britain. It will take place 

on the South Bank in London and will 

feature carnival rides, live music, food and 

drink, performances and dancing. 

Elsewhere in London, royal wedding 

street parties will be taking place. 

Throughout the city there will be road closures 

to make way for celebratory parties to 

mark the historic occasion.

The wedding route 

At 10:30am on Friday, April 29, 

Kate Middleton will travel, not by Glass 

Carriage as Princess Diana did, but by 

car from one of the palaces in the area— 

Buckingham Palace, St. James’s Palace or 

Clarence House—along The Mall, Horse 

Guards Parade, Whitehall and Parliament 

Square to Westminster Abbey to be married 

by the Archbishop of Canterbury. 

Prince William will travel separately 

along pretty much the same route, which 

will take him along the Mall, through Horse 

Guards Parade to Whitehall and on around 

Parliament Square to Westminster Abbey. 

With a history going back more than 

1,000 years, Westminster Abbey was 

already the burial site of King Edward, last 

of the Anglo Saxon kings, when William 

the Conqueror chose it for his coronation 

in 1066. English monarchs have been 

crowned here ever since. Edward, later 

Edward the Confessor, was made a saint 

in the 11th century. The shrine of this 

medieval saint, consecrated in the presence 

of King Henry II and Thomas Becket, 

Archbishop of Canterbury, remains at the 

center of the Abbey.

April 27 through April 29, but will open 

again the day after the Royal Wedding. Visit 

to see the preparations on April 26 or watch 

the Abbey get back to normal on April 30. 

Up to a dozen large plasma screens 

will be placed around Westminster Abbey 

for public viewing of the ceremony, so turn 

up early to get a good spot near the front. 

The ceremony 

Starting at 11am at Westminster Abbey, 

the wedding ceremony is estimated to last 

an hour, after which the newly married 

couple will travel, by carriage this time, 

back to Buckingham Palace for a reception 

with the groom’s mother, Queen Elizabeth 

II and several hundred guests. It is expected 

that there will be appearances by the couple 

and other members of the royal family on 

the balcony of Buckingham Palace. 

Later that evening, Prince Charles, 

William’s father and current heir to the 

throne, will host a dinner dance for the 

couple at Clarence House. 

Souvenirs 

Six vendor stalls will be selling official 

Royal Wedding souvenirs—two in Green 

Park and four in St. James’ Park. Along 

with Hyde Park, both parks form part of the 

Royal Parks of London. 

The British Museum is also offering a 

few Royal Wedding souvenirs that can be

commemorative coin 

The Royal Canadian Mint has 

unveiled two commemorative coins in 

honour of the upcoming Royal Wedding 

of Prince William and Kate Middleton. 

A $20 silver coin with an engraving 

of the Prince and his fiancée gazing 

lovingly into each other’s eyes is the 

work of Laurie McGaw, a 57-year-old 

Guelph artist. 

McGaw also designed a $300 gold 

coin for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic 

Winter Games, three coins in the 

Continuity of the Crown Series and a 

2007 Silver dollar featuring Mohawk 

leader Joseph Brant. 

Embedded in the coin is a sapphire-coloured 

crystal, reminiscent 

of the 18-carat sapphire-and-diamond 

engagement ring worn 

by Middleton, which once 

belonged to William’s late 

mother Diana, Princess of 

Wales. 

The coin is also 

engraved along its edge 

with HRH Prince William 

and Miss Catherine 

Middleton and there is a 

heart hidden among its maple 

leaves. 

The nickel-plated 25-cent 

commemorative coin features a portrait

In September 2009, new legislation 

called The Wills, Estates and Succession 

Act was passed. This act is based largely, 

but not completely, on the BC Law 

Institute’s 2006 report Wills, Estates and 

Succession: A Modern Legal Framework. 

Although passed in September 2009, 

the new legislation will not come into force 

until this autumn. 

One of the key new provisions of the 

new act deals with what is called “undue 

influence” in the making of a will. Under 

this provision, the burden of proof shifts 

from the person alleging undue influence— 

as it is under current law—to the person 

being accused of using undue influence. 

The accused person must prove that the will 

was freely made. 

When the new legislation comes into 

force, it will also apply to existing wills. 

“It’s a brand new provision which could 

serve as a red flag by warning that there 

may be delays and other problems down 

the road if this section comes into play 

when an estate is being settled,” said lawyer 

Mary-Jane Wilson, a partner with Wilson 

Rasmussen LLP, who specializes in estate 

law. “Any kind of lawsuit is definitely going 

to delay an estate settlement. People should 

be aware of this new rule.”

“Under Section 52 [of the new legislation], 

where a person [the challenger] 

establishes that a party was in a position 

where there was a potential for dependence 

or domination of the will-maker, and alleges 

that a gift in the will resulted from that party 

using this position to unduly influence the 

will-maker, the onus is now placed on the 

party seeking to uphold the gift to establish 

that the will did not result from undue influence,” 

said Wilson. 

Sally Dennis, who heads the wealthmanagement 

division of the law firm Farris, 

Vaughan, Wills & Murphy LLP, said this 

section has been included in the new legislation 

to provide better protection for elderly 

will-makers. “You have many examples 

today of suspected elder abuse as the population 

ages and older people become more 

dependent on others.” 

Under the current law, the challenger 

of the will making the accusation of undue 

influence won’t necessarily have all the 

facts, whereas a caregiver accused of coercion 

is likely to have all the facts. 

“I think Section 52 is an improvement 

because it better protects the will-maker,“ 

said Dennis. “And after all, a will really 

should reflect somebody’s true wishes.” 

This new burden of proof provision, 

while perhaps one of the more dramatic 

changes, is only one in a new statute with 271 

sections that gathers together seven existing 

pieces of legislation into one omnibus bill. It 

has been the subject of extensive consultation, 

including a comprehensive study by the 

BC Law Institute that began in 2003. 

The intent of the new law is to update 

and streamline B.C.’s succession law. One 

of the goals in the vast overhaul is to make 

the province’s succession law easier for the 

public to understand. This is likely to be of 

particular importance in a province with a 

large number of retirees. 

People need to be aware of new rules 

that govern situations regarding intestacy, 

as well as ways to ensure a deceased person’s 

last wishes are respected, even if they 

are contained in a document that does not 

meet the requirements to be considered a 

proper will. 

Some of B.C.’s top wills and estate 

practitioners were involved in preparing 

the new legislation and the consultations 

and feedback included participation from a 

range of estate and financial planners. 

The B.C. government has stated that 

the new legislation will not invalidate wills 

made before the law comes into force but 

will apply to their interpretation.

Direct, non-stop and 

connecting flights explained 

Did you know that there are three types 

of flight categories? 

Non-stop: a flight which goes directly 

to the destination airport without any connections 

or plane changes. If you want the 

shortest travel time, fly non-stop. However, 

non-stop flights are usually the most expensive 

compared to direct or connecting 

flights. 

Direct flight: a flight which does 

not require passengers to change planes. 

However, you probably still have to make 

a connection. A direct flight simply means 

that the flight number remains the same and 

you do not have to change aircraft. Often 

times when you see a flight schedule it may 

not indicate that there is a connection. 

Connecting service: means your flight 

will have at least one connection and most 

likely a plane change as well. 

Airline profits expected 

to lose altitude this year 

Following record high profitability in 

2010, Canada’s airlines can expect lower 

profits this year due to higher costs, according 

to The Conference Board of Canada’s 

Canadian Industrial Outlook: Canada’s Air 

Transportation Industry – Winter 2011, 

released last month. 

“Cost-control measures implemented 

during the recession helped airline profits 

take off when sales started improving in 

2010,” said Maxim Armstrong, economist. 

“With costs expected to catch up with 

revenues, these profit levels won’t be sustainable. 

Still, profits will remain high by 

historical standards.” 

The report said business and consumer 

confidence are driving growth in sales and as 

result businesses are loosening their budget 

constraints and this resumption of income 

growth is allowing more people to fly. 

Particularly encouraging for the air 

transportation industry is the rising number 

of international travellers coming to 

Canada, both from emerging countries and 

from a slight upward trend of American 

visitors to Canada in recent months. 

This trend is expected to continue in the 

coming years. However, domestic travel 

will remain the primary source of growth 

for the industry. 

Following two years of decline, costs 

will rise by more than nine per cent in 2011 

due to higher oil prices and increased hiring. 

Pre-tax profits are expected to fall to 

$785-million in 2011, down from $1.2-billion 

last year. Profits will remain in the 

$700- to $800-million range annually for 

the next three years.

aircraft will 

lighten the load 

On April 1, April Fool’s Day, WestJet 

issued a news release announcing a new 

state-of-the-art, money-saving feature on 

board all of its flights aimed at countering 

the rising price of jet fuel. 

The release said the airline would be 

using air mixed with helium in the ventilation 

system to lighten the weight of the aircraft. 

Helium is approximately 85 per cent 

lighter than nitrogen, which accounts for 80 

per cent of the air we breathe. With a maximum 

takeoff weight of more than 68,000 

kilograms, adding helium to the air mix 

would provide fuel savings of approximately 

three to four per cent on board WestJet’s 

Boeing Next-Generation 737s. This would, 

in turn, allow WestJet to pass the savings on 

to its guests. 

“As a low-cost airline, we are constantly 

looking for innovative ways to keep our 

costs low,” said Richard Bartrem, WestJet’s 

vice-president, communications and community 

relations. “We have been working 

with our aviation partners to determine the 

feasibility of this initiative and we are very 

excited that it has come to fruition.”

Clapper technology to its guests last year.

the reading light in the console above their

Acura’s newly refined 2012 Acura TL 

Acura’s 2012 TL made its Western 

Canadian debut at the recent 10-day 

Vancouver International Auto Show. 

This Acura TL comes with upgraded

Have you ever gone shopping for a car 

and been totally intimidated because you 

don’t understand what the dealers are talking 

about? Here are five terms you need to 

know before you make that very important 

purchase. 

1. MSRP (The price the dealer 

wants you to pay) 

The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail 

Price, commonly known as the list price 

or window sticker, is the price set by the 

manufacturer. Although the overwhelming 

majority of new cars are sold at less than 

the MSRP, some dealers will hold out for 

this price on a very hot-selling vehicle that 

is in high demand. 

2. Dealer Invoice Price (The 

price the dealer pays) 

Manufacturers invoice dealers for 

vehicles as soon as they are delivered. The 

dealer will typically pay for the vehicle via 

a prearranged line of credit. Commonly, 

the dealer will start paying interest charges 

from the first day onwards. 

3. Hold Back/ Marketing 

Assistance 

Most manufacturers help subsidize the 

interest charges and marketing/advertising 

that a dealer incurs by paying the dealer a 

holdback and/or marketing assistance dollar 

amount, after the vehicle has been sold. 

4. Factory to Consumer 

Incentives (Savings for you) 

In an effort to stimulate sales, many 

manufacturers will offer incentives to the 

consumer. These incentives are commonly 

advertised in the media and can consist of 

low rate financing/leasing rates, such as 

zero per cent, cash rebates or a combination 

of both. If a manufacturer is offering zero 

per cent or $2,000 cash, the emphasis is on 

the word or; which means that you cannot 

get zero per cent financing and $2,000 cash. 

You have to decide between the two. 

5. Factory-to-Dealer Incentives 

(Additional savings for you) 

These are commonly referred to as 

hidden or secret rebates. Internally these 

non-advertised dealer incentives can be 

known as marketing credits, trading dollars, 

factory cash, dealer cash, dealer 

bonuses, invoice credits, etc. They are 

user to encourage dealers to further discount 

their prices to sell more vehicles. 

Most dealers will factor in these factory-todealer 

incentives when negotiating a deal. 

Effectively, this may allow the purchaser 

to buy/lease a new vehicle for less than the 

dealer invoice price.

Wire throttle system also creates a ‘blip’ of 

the throttle to help match gear speeds while 

downshifting. 

The transmission has also been teamed 

with a new multi-clutch torque converter 

that not only reduces heat build-up during 

operation but also allows for lock- 

up activation during a much wider range 

of driving conditions, which provides an 

increase in highway fuel economy over 

the 2011 TL. 

To further improve operating efficiency, 

the TL’s standard 3.5-litre V-6 engine 

now has a host of friction-reduction technologies, 

while a revised air inlet system 

provides cooler air for both the 3.5-litre and 

3.7-litre engines. 

The 2012 TL’s new look includes a 

redesigned front bumper with improved 

aerodynamics, a revised grille, updated 

headlights and turn signals, a new fog light 

design and a shorter front overhang. At the 

rear, a new rear bumper incorporates smaller 

rear reflectors, a repositioned license 

plate, updated taillights and a thinner rear 

trunk edge trim.

guess people kept on using the Golf name 

anyway, so VW has responded to public 

demand. 

The car has always been called Golf 

in most other markets around the world 

and, incidentally, the correct Europeanstyle 

pronunciation is “gulf” as in body of 

water, and not “golf” as in the game. 

The Golf has an interesting history as 

it was actually the very first front-wheel 

drive hatchback ever to capture public 

imagination, back in 1974. It was very

much a pioneer and was widely copied 

by automakers the world over. It was the 

first effort by VW to replace the old Beetle 

model and was a major success from the 

start. There have been all kinds of versions 

over the years—the basic hatchback, station 

wagons, convertibles, the performance 

GTI and even—for a brief time—a raisedsuspension 

4X4 model. 

Like its predecessors (this is the sixth 

generation), the Golf has that very practical 

hatchback layout that made it a big hit 

all those years ago. Although this is a very 

compact car, the load space in the back 

with rear seatbacks folded is huge—almost 

van-like, in fact. This is the big advantage 

of a hatchback over a sedan with a trunk. 

No matter how lard it is, there’s only so 

much a trunk will hold—often the load 

area opening itself is the obstacle, especially 

with some “swoopy” modern car 

designs. 

Styling follows Golf tradition, so you 

have to look quite carefully to see that it 

really is a brand new car from stem to stern. 

(Incidentally, there were no significant 

changes for the 2011 model year). 

This resistant to styling changes is no 

bad thing for owners who like to keep their 

cars for a while, because no VW Golf ever 

appear dated and even three-generationsago 

models still look pretty good. 

What is new is what VW describes as 

“the new face of Volkswagen.” The grille 

and under-bumper air intakes are wide and 

narrow and the old vertical look has gone. 

The headlights blend neatly into the 

grille and with its rounded corners and 

sculpted wheel arches, the new car looks

Models include a basic three-door, a 

five-door, a performance-oriented GTI 

three-door and a GTI five-door. There’s 

also a wagon, which is sleeker and more 

attractive than earlier Golfs in this configuration. 

The choice is wide and if you count 

all the different trim versions there are no 

less than 16—and that’s not including the 

wagon. 

The two engines available for three- 

and five-door non-GTI Golfs include 

a 2.5-litre 20-valve inline five-cylinder 

developing 170-horsepower, and a 2.0-litre 

16-valve four-cylinder turbocharged diesel 

(TDI). 

With diesel awareness now taking hold 

in North America, expect the turbo-diesel 

to be the big seller here. It’s amazingly 

economical and the car has surprising 

range, possibly 1,200-kilometres or more 

between fill-ups. 

Transmissions include five-speed 

manual and a six-speed automatic with 

Tiptronic. There’s also a six-speed auto 

with direct-shift gearbox (DSG), depending 

on which Golf variant is chosen. The 

GTI is available with a six-speed manual 

and also DSG. 

Buy the GTI and you get a 2.0-litre 

four-cylinder TDI powerplant developing 

200-horsepower. 

Anti-lock disc brakes are standard all 

round and electronic brake force distribution 

is included on all models. This is a 

great aid in emergency stops when the 

electronics can ‘think’ faster than the driver 

and stop the car as quickly as possible. 

Suspension is independent all round 

and buyers get traction control and stability 

control, too. 

Given the fact that a new Golf is not 

particularly expensive, this car is packed 

with all the technology you’d find in a far 

more upscale model. 

Golf interiors have been constantly 

improving for years and the most recent 

models have been trimmed and fitted out 

to what I usually call “BMW standards.” 

Take a look at the way the dash panels fit 

and how all the trim matches and you’ll see 

what I mean. 

As with most models these days, there 

are all kinds of upgrades available and by 

exploiting the options list, something akin 

to a small luxury car can be created. 

Buyers can choose a navigation system 

with upgraded sound, heated front seats, 

rear side thorax air bags for five-door models, 

heated windshield sprayer nozzles and 

a power glass sunroof. 

Mostly though, the latest Golf is very 

well kitted out in standard form and all 

cars have air-conditioning, remote key fob 

for the locks, tire pressure monitoring and 

other items you sometimes have to pay 

extra for. 

The steering wheel on all Golfs both 

tilts and telescopes—a feature all cars 

should have, yet there are many that don’t 

even offer this as an option. 

The GTI is, as always, the most desirable 

of Golf models and is highly respected 

by performance car enthusiasts and has 

been for years. It’s a blast to drive and 

offers serious levels of performance with 

outstanding handling and a fair degree of 

anonymity. A performance car that shrieks 

“Look at me, I’m really fast” is sometimes 

more of a liability than an asset. 

There are some subtle changes to the 

basic Golf look—big wheels and nice wide 

tires, for example—but the GTI has no 

go-faster aerodynamic gimmicks tacked all 

over the body shell. This kind of approach 

is what attracts lovers of no-nonsense driver’s 

cars to the GTI in the first place. 

Whichever Golf you buy, it’ll be economical, 

fun to drive, long-lasting, beautifully 

built and will boast excellent performance 

and handling. And as a bonus, it’ll 

be a very long time before it looks in any 

way out of date.

Ford begins building digital child crash dummy 

Ford is beginning research into one of 

the world’s first digital human child body 

models that could someday serve as a 

digital dummy for computer crash testing. 

The work is the next step in Ford’s 

decade-long research to build a sophisticated 

and detailed computer adult human 

model, with body parts and organs painstakingly 

replicated so scientists could better 

understand what happens to the adult 

body in a crash. 

“We study injury trends in the field, 

and we know that traffic crashes are the 

leading cause of death for people from age 

1 to 34,” said Dr. Steve Rouhana, senior 

technical leader for safety, Ford Research 

and Advanced Engineering. “We want to 

better understand how injuries to younger 

occupants may be different. 

“A child’s body is very different 

from an adult’s. Building a digital human 

model of a child will help us design future 

systems that offer better protection for our 

young passengers.” 

The digital world 

Building a digital model is no simple 

task. The work on Ford’s adult human 

body model that started back in 1993 was 

not completed until 2004 and only then 

after extensive validations. 

Ford begins one of the world’s first 

research projects to build a digital human 

model of a child with more lifelike 

re-creations of the skeletal structure, 

internal organs and brain to enhance 

future safety research. 

Digital models are used in research, 

not in vehicle development. They don’t 

take the place of crash dummies, which 

measure the effect of forces on the body. 

Instead, they are used as a way to understand 

how to further improve restraint sys- 

tem effectiveness through better understanding 

of injury mechanisms. 

The digital model is constructed component 

by component—brain, skull, neck, 

ribcage, upper and lower extremities, 

etc.—with extensive research included 

on each part. 

“Building the model of a person is 

just like building a model of a car,” said 

Rouhana. “You start with your surface 

geometry for each component and any 

subcomponent it contains—in this case
