The Department of Air Transport 

The Department of Air Transport of the School of Engineering at Cranfield University combines 

a wealth of practical expertise together with extensive research and teaching experience in one 

centre of excellence. Cranfield has been serving the air transport industry for over 45 years. 

The Department of Air Transport is the main international centre for postgraduate teaching in air 

transport management and safety. Our flexible approach to teaching means that MSc courses 

and PhD research can be undertaken on a part-time basis as well as full-time. We are a focus 

for research in air transport, and we also provide consultancy services and career development 

training to the industry. 

The department is home to the Cranfield Safety and Accident Investigation Centre, as well as 

research centres specialising in business travel and in the provision of air transport services in 

remote regions. 

As well as a staff of sixteen lecturers and researchers, the Department can draw on expertise 

and resources from elsewhere within Cranfield, and externally from other air transport 

specialists. It is also supported by extensive library facilities and on-line databases. 

The purpose of this register is to introduce you to the participants of the MSc’s in Air Transport 

Management and Airport Planning and Management who are seeking positions in the air 

transport industry from the beginning of September this year. Many of the participants have had 

industrial, commercial and organisational experience prior to joining the MSc course and they 

will be seeking positions commensurate with their maturity and experience. Others have come 

direct from university and will be particularly interested in employment at management entry 

level.

The MSc in Air Transport Management 

The aim of the course is to prepare students, coming either from university or from within the 

industry, for careers at a senior level in the management of civil air transport related disciplines. 

The course comprises nine compulsory modules:

The course involves group project work, seminars led by senior visiting lecturers from the 

industry, videos and visits. The course includes a thesis, which provides an opportunity to study 

a problem in detail.

“ Before coming to Cranfield I graduated in Transport Management and gathered working experience in aviation 

through internships, my first thesis and a student traineeship. So the passion for air transport has always been 

there. But I felt my academic education in aviation was not complete. After comparing the programmes of various 

universities with a good reputation in the air transport industry, I realised that Cranfield is offering the most 

adequate and well-diversified course. And the course delivered what it promised: a 360° view of the industry, 

including airports, airlines, leasing companies, aircraft and engine manufacturers, air traffic control, aircraft 

maintenance etc. But most important, it enabled me to build up an invaluable network consisting of people from my 

class as well as permanent and visiting lecturers. 

But the most crucial question is: did Cranfield add value to my CV and therefore have an impact on my career? 

Well, although the aviation business was still in a very tense situation when I finished the course, I started as a 

Management Assistant with one of the world ’ s leading aircraft leasing companies, debis AirFinance, just one month 

after giving my final presentation at Cranfield. I am convinced this would have not been possible without the

“My initial career was in a completely unrelated field, working as a manager in the entertainment industry. However, 

having always been extremely interested in the airline industry, I realised that this was where I wanted to be. Thus, 

I looked at my options and realised that Cranfield represented an ideal opportunity to increase my knowledge of air 

transport, and to enable me to establish a career in the industry. 

The course was extremely interesting and enjoyable – spending a year with like-minded people and total 

immersion into the airline world, meant I learnt so much about all aspects of the business, both in and out of the 

classroom. It did take a lot of dedication and hard work, but was ultimately extremely rewarding and worthwhile. 

The course culminated in a case study where we, as groups, put together a detailed start-up airline business plan, 

which enabled us to put all the theory into practice. 

I undertook my thesis on behalf of Channel Express, a Passenger Charter and Cargo airline, who were looking at 

expanding into the scheduled market. The knowledge I had gained, and also the final case study enabled me to 

join them on leaving the course to assist in managing the start up, and then the ongoing business development of 

their scheduled operation – Jet2. 

I subsequently moved to MyTravelLite – the low fares airline which was part of the MyTravel Group PLC, and after 

an initial spell as Head of Marketing and Development, assumed the role of Managing Director - something that 

without the knowledge gained at Cranfield would have been impossible! In March 2006 I moved to Montreal to join 

IATA and in May 2008 returned to the UK as Commercial Director of bmibaby. ”

“Before starting the MSc in Air Transport at Cranfield University I had not worked in the air transport industry. I had 

to decide whether a year spent at Cranfield would, in fact, assist me in my objective of moving into air transport. I 

decided to take the chance and can say, without any hesitation, that taking the Cranfield MSc in Air Transport was 

one of the most useful years of my life, as well as being very interesting and enjoyable. The Cranfield name helped 

me to secure a British Airways work experience attachment during the winter holiday of the course. But the real test 

was to see whether I could secure a permanent position within the industry at the end of the course. As it turned 

out, the Cranfield University brand turned out to be one of the most well respected in the industry. My year at

intended to be put into practice.

My main activity is kayaking - a sport in which I am a qualified coach, regularly leading groups on rivers around

I have long held an interest in the air transport industry - as can be seen, for instance, in the thesis I undertook as 

part of my first degree. So, my current Masters studies allow me to add an array of practical, industry-specific 

knowledge to the more general, background knowledge on issues - such as the environment, society, and 

economy – tackled as part of my degree in Geography. This combination enables me to effectively operate within 

the air transport industry, already possessing a wealth of knowledge and understanding of the industry, while 

retaining the ability to look outside the industry – to be able to take the view of an outsider looking in, where

The research objective of this graduation internship was to analyze whether capacity and 

timeliness problems may arise in the E-basement of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol during peak 

hours in the future. And to examine whether the baggage process could be improved by 

processing the baggage flows in the baggage buffer of the E-basement in a more effective 

way, so that in the future, with the same resources, more baggage could be processed 

without a negative impact on the quality of the baggage process. 

European Space Agency (ESA-ESTEC) 

External Project: Developing a Lunar Rover 

For my thesis at Aerospace Engineering I planned a lunar mission to the moon together with 

a team of students. The goal of this lunar mission was to bring a rover vehicle to the moon as 

cheap as possible. Designing this lunar rover itself was also a part of the project. This 

wonderful project was based on the Google Lunar X-prize; professional teams were working 

on the same project as well. During this project ESA-ESTEC was partially involved. At the 

end of the project, ESA-ESTEC had special interest in enhancing the design of the lunar 

rover vehicle. Therefore, I worked with my project team at ESA-ESTEC as part of an external 

project for developing this enhanced lunar rover vehicle for the period of one year. 

I am an active person and enjoy snowboarding, cycling and playing volleyball. At my volleyball club in The 

Netherlands I have been trainer and coach of several youth and senior teams. Furthermore, I have been the 

captain of the team where I was playing in. Whilst I was studying at Delft University of Technology I have been the 

mentor and project-coach for the first-year students at Aerospace Engineering, the treasurer in the board of the 

study society and the chief of the sponsor-committee and the magazine-committee. At the moment I am the course 

representative for the Airport Planning and Management course at Cranfield University. I take a keen interest in 

the aviation and the aerospace industry and enjoy keeping up-to-date with current developments. 


After finishing the Master of Science programme at Delft University of Technology my goal was to get more

Graduate: 

Graduation research project at the passenger services department. This project involved a 

future study concerning travel, consumer and passenger behaviour trends. The results lead 

to advice concerning innovations and improvements to the passenger processes. Major 

tasks during this research involved gaining qualitative data, creating a model to process this 

data into a future outlook for Schiphol airport and analysis to create useful conclusions. 

2009 Dutch Antilles Express, Curacao, Netherlands Antilles 

Intern: 

As an intern at the maintenance planning department of this Caribbean regional airline, the 

main responsibilities involved establishing a fleet reliability program, a ground support 

equipment maintenance program and assistance with the implementation of a new 

maintenance system. 


Apart from a special interest in the aviation industry I am keen on travelling. Looking for new cultures, 

environments and people inspire me. This is something I would like to combine with my future occupation. 

Furthermore I am an active and competitive sports player. 


In my bachelor degree the first three years were dedicated to aviation related technical and operational learning 

objectives.The fourth year was dedicated to gaining practical management experience. As airports have my 

specific interest and to develop further skills in the business, strategical and management side I participated in the 

Airport planning and management course at Cranfield University. This mix of skills provides me with the necessary 

base to achieve my objectives in this industry. These objectives include working in teams on strategy, planning or 

business projects, working abroad in different cultures and to continue my learning process.

Executive MSc in Airport Planning and Management (part-time) 

The part-time Executive MSc in Airport Planning and Management started in September 2008. 

It stems directly from its full-time equivalent, which was launched in October 2006. Besides 

having its origins in the full-time course, the part-time MSc shares modules with the Executive 

MSc in Air Transport Management and makes use of a number of highly successful one week 

residential professional short courses offered to industry by the Department of Air Transport. 

The great advantage of having these short courses as part of the programme is that they bring 

together airport and air transport managers working all over the world. The wealth of experience 

that this interaction provides both in terms of gaining knowledge of different operating 

environments and having the opportunity to discuss airport and air transport issues with 

experienced practitioners makes this course unique. The nature of the student base encourages 

a self-motivating, interactive approach to learning, with much inter-student transference of 

knowledge and skills. 

The course requires all students to complete the following eleven taught modules and a research 

thesis.

Executive MSc in Air Transport Management (part-time) 

The part-time Executive MSc course was launched in November 1995 as a direct response to 

demand for such a programme from the air transport industry. It stems directly from its full-time 

equivalent, which has provided more than 700 graduates for the air transport sector over the 

past thirty five years. Besides having its origins in the full-time course, the part-time MSc makes 

use of a number of highly successful one week residential professional short courses the 

Department of Air Transport has been providing for the industry. The great advantage of having 

these short courses as part of the programme is that they bring together air transport managers 

working literally all over the world. The wealth of experience that this interaction provides both in 

terms of gaining knowledge of different operating environments and having the opportunity to 

discuss air transport issues with experienced practitioners makes the course unique. The nature 

of the student base encourages a self-motivating, interactive approach to learning, with much 

inter-student transference of knowledge and skills. 

Employers of students currently taking the course include: Airstream, Amadeus, Cargolux, 

Eurocopter, Qinetiq, Rolls Royce AeroEngines, Ryanair, GECAS, Qatar Airways, Kenyan CAA 

The aim of the course is to provide those employed in the air transport sector with an in-depth 

understanding of: 

� air transport economics and financial management 

� mathematical techniques relevant to air transport x air transport commercial practice 

� air transport operations (aircraft and infrastructure) 

The course consists of eleven modules of 1 week duration. Nine of the module are compulsory 

and must be taken during the first two years of the course (including a case study), the student 

can then choose 2 optional modules to complete in the third year, plus a thesis.
