Amazing Grazing 

Graze boxes, sharing platters, nibbles – 

whatever you like to call them, these tasty, 

beautiful looking plates of deliciousness are all 

the rage at the minute. 

There are loads of great local businesses that 

can deliver wonderful, ready made boxes 

for you to tuck into but if you fancy making 

your own, here are some ideas and recipes to 

inspire you. 

A bit of planning is essential. The size of 

your platter will depend on how many you 

are feeding. The ingredients will depend 

on whether you have veggies, vegans or all 

meat eaters. The contents will depend on the 

time of year and the event. You could have a 

theme like Mediterranean, round-the-world or 

traditional ploughmans. 

We would recommend a mix of homemade 

and shop bought produce – because let’s face 

it, life is too short! 

Try to keep it as bright as possible – with 

contrasting colours next to each other. Think 

about textures. You want some crunch as 

well as some soft (bread sticks next to a dip). 

As for fl avours, if you have spicy food fans 

then add some chilli jam, spicy sausage and 

Mexican cheese. For those who prefer things 

mild, add some traditional chutney and some 

mild soft cheese. 

Fruit is always a nice touch. Chopped 

strawberries, green and red grapes, 

blueberries, fi gs and kumquats all look 

amazing and go well with savoury. 

The recipes opposite are all easy and quick 

to make and will add a personal touch to your 

platter. Have a go, let your imagination run 

wild – and send us a photo!

we used: 

Strawberries, Medjool 

dates, Mikado chocolate 

sticks, walnuts, 

homemade chilli jam, 

homemade salsa, 

homemade hummus, 

carrot and celery sticks, 

garlic and herb goats 

cheese, stilton, sourdough 

crackers, breadsticks 

wrapped in Parma ham, 

sliced chorizo and salami, 

green olives, grapes, 

cherry tomatoes and 

chorizo sticks. 

We served warm feta 

soda bread in a basket 

on the side.

Quick Salsa 

400g tin chopped tomatoes 

½ small red onion – finely 

chopped 

1 clove garlic – grated 

Splash of wine vinegar 

Juice of ½ lime 

½ green chilli – finely chopped 

(optional) 

2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander 

Pinch sugar 

Salt & pepper to taste 

Method 

Using a sieve – drain the tomatoes 

from the juice (save this for 

another recipe). Use a spoon to 

push the juice through the sieve. 

In a bowl mix all the ingredients 

together. Season to taste and 

store in the fridge until needed. 

Only add chilli if you want a really 

spicy salsa. 

Really Easy 

Hummus 

400g tin chickpeas – drained & 

rinsed 

2 tbsp tahini paste 

4 cloves garlic 

Juice of 1 x lemon 

1 tsp ground cumin 

6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 

Plenty of salt to taste 

Method 

Place the chickpeas in a food 

processor (you could mash them 

if you don’t have one). Add all the 

other ingredients and whizz until 

well blended. It’s important to keep 

tasting and add extra salt and lemon 

juice if necessary. Make it to your 

taste. If it’s too stiff , add a splash 

of water. To serve, sprinkle with 

paprika and olive oil. 

This recipe is easy to adapt – 

sometimes we add chilli powder or 

a couple of roasted red peppers 

(peeled). You could add some 

coriander and more lemon. The 

possibilities are endless. 

Feta Soda Bread 

200g plain flour (+ extra for 

dusting) 

200g wholemeal flour 

1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 

1 tsp sea salt 

1 bunch chives – snipped into 

small pieces 

100g feta – crumbled 

200g natural yogurt 

100ml milk 

2 tsp herbs (thyme or za’atar 

work well) 

Method 

Heat oven to 200°C. We used a cast 

iron 24cm lidded casserole dish. You 

could use a baking sheet. 

Place the fl ours in a bowl along with 

the bicarb of soda, salt, chives and 

cheese. Mix the yogurt and milk 

together in a jug and add to the dry 

mix, bringing it all together. You may 

need to add a bit more milk. You are 

looking for an elastic dough, not too 

sticky. Place on a fl oured surface 

and shape it into a round. Dust the 

base of the casserole/baking sheet 

with fl our. 

Place the dough in the casserole/ 

on the baking sheet. Deeply score 

the top into 4 x quarters. Brush with 

milk. Place lid on (if using) and bake 

for 30 mins. Then take lid off and 

bake for another 10. The top should 

be nicely browned and the bottom 

should sound hollow when tapped. 

On a baking tray it should take about 

40 mins. Serve hot with butter.

My Perfect Wedding... 

In June it was my 12th wedding anniversary. Every time 

I close my eyes, I remember that day like it was just 

yesterday. 

One of the most important days in any girls life. This 

special day you have a chance to feel like a real-life 

princess. To create the most unforgettable memories, 

have the most beautiful photos. It’s the day when life is 

at its best and a happy healthy future is your dream. 

Is it really that easy to organize and enjoy the big day? 

Well, it was for me and that is exactly why I thought I’d 

share my secrets to a perfect wedding with everyone 

today. 

I was only 25 when I got married and despite being 

young, although I didn’t think I was young at the time, I 

knew exactly how I wanted my wedding to be. 

It was not about the venue, the number of guests, 

the dress, the food or the cars or any other wedding 

attributes. It was about me and my soon to be 

husband, he was and is my man for life and the only 

one I was ever going to marry. I wanted to ensure that 

it would be the best day of our lives and one that we 

would never forget. 

I planned and organised the big day myself and yes it 

was a beautiful dress, a nice venue and amazing tasty 

food that never stopped being served. But the main rule 

was everything focused on us, the new married family. 

My very laid-back attitude and chilled mood, made the 

big day utterly and completely stress free. Most guests 

commented that it was the most relaxed wedding they 

had ever been too. 

Our wedding was in Ukraine and by our Ukrainian 

tradition’s weddings are organised very quickly, no 

years of planning or waiting. I always say when you 

know you know, no time needed. 

My future husband proposed to me on our 1st 

Christmas together and 6 months later we were 

husband and wife. 

Despite my relaxed attitude towards the wedding day, I 

had very disciplined and particular expectations about 

our appearance. Everything and everyone should look 

and feel perfect. 

Forgive me if you disagree but I believe that when you 

look good you feel good and I don’t see it any other way. 

Gym sessions became very productive for both of us. 

And as you would expect from me, I will be giving you 

some skin care and pre wedding skin treatment advice 

to help you look and feel your best for your very 

personal special day. 

When I was younger, just like most of us, I suffered 

from break outs and I could not even imagine a spot 

appearing on my face for my wedding day, it would be 

considered as catastrophe for me. 

I had a good skin care routine (at the time I used 

Clarins and Guerlain) but I decided to get professional 

advice and help. I started to have regular facials and 

micro dermabrasions, I tried lymphatic drainage and 

vacuum massage on my face to give it a sharper look. 

I did enquire about Botox, but I look back now and 

realise that I was given honest and professional advice 

that I didn’t need it at that time. 

Lip fillers were on my radar for a few years, even 

before my wedding, but guess what I freaked out and 

did not have them done. This is the only thing that I 

regret when I look back at the photos. I had them a 

few months after the wedding by my skilful husband 

who is a medical Doctor and who introduced me to the 

wonderful world of medical aesthetics. 

The rest is just finer detail: the hair, the makeup and 

the dress. Remember, the most important part of your 

day are the two people making life long promises to 

each other and feeling amazing.

Three little words… 

We know physical movement, 

let’s call this exercise, of any kind, is 

beneficial for our health. Correct? If 

you agree just give me a little head 

nod to yourself. 

We also know that eating ‘healthy’ is beneficial 

for our body… Correct? We aren’t going to 

get into a debate around good nutrition in this 

article. It’s a minefield and frankly… we know 

we should eat well. 

So, if we’re not talking about exercise or 

nutrition… what else matters or affects 

our health? 

1. Rest… actually recovering from the stresses 

of exercise, nutrition/ dieting change as well 

as dealing with the day-to-day life stress 

we manage. Efficient recovery is almost 

ALWAYS underrated. It’s actually something 

we monitor very closely with our clients and 

members. So next time you’re feeling a little 

burnt out, ask yourself when did I last rest 

fully and allow my body to rebuild? 

2. Sleep… not the 4 hours we might brag about 

(I’m hardcore, I only need 4 hours sleep we 

might say) nor the 9 hours you HAVE to have 

because you can’t operate on anything less. 

We need 6-8 hours sleep to allow the body 

to recover. For those of us who struggle to 

get a night of unbroken sleep there are loads 

of useful techniques to help. There are apps 

for the phone, sprays for your pillow even 

eye-masks. 

3. Forgive… yourself. So many of us fail to 

change our lives because that one slice 

of cake has messed everything up. IT HAS 

NOT!!! It’s called normal human behaviour 

and we didn’t mess anything up. The effort 

it takes to begin a change of lifestyle is huge 

and punishing ourselves for one minor slip 

isn’t fair and truth be told, it’s exhausting 

starting over constantly. 

The summary I’d like to leave you with is 

to think a little further than just exercise 

and dieting. 

Let’s think about our whole selves and our 

wellbeing. And I can’t stress this enough, 

eating a chocolate bar isn’t the end of the 

world, it happens! 

Picking back up right away, regardless of 

what’s happened, is what is going to see your

Welcome to our new fashion page, NG Style. Each 

month we will be sharing our fashion tips and 

trends with you. Starting with our outfit challenge! 

We all love a bargain. It’s a great feeling, knowing 

you’ve had a good deal. Buying second hand or 

re-cycled clothes is not only better for the planet, 

it’s better for your purse and you can quite often 

end up with something a bit more unique. 

Our resident bargain hunter is Sarah. If there’s 

a deal to be had, Sarah knows about it. So, we 

decided to set her the challenge of dressing one 

of us (Cat), head to toe, for the princely sum of 

£30. As a mum of four, Cat has neither the time or 

inclination to go clothes shopping, so we decided 

to surprise her. 

After an initial consultation – what size are you? 

Do you want an outfit for work or going out? Do

you? What brands do you wear most often? Sarah

Charity shops are great for picking up a bargain 

(while also supporting a good cause). We have 

spent many an afternoon trawling through the local 

high street shops looking for that hidden gem.

As I write, we are a few weeks past Freedom Day and 

the easing of many restrictions which have dominated 

life over the past eighteen months or so. 

Employers are now able to dictate that staff should 

return to their places of work as WFH is no longer 

the requirement. However, research has shown that 

almost 75% of workers would like the flexibility of 

remote working to continue in some format. Many are 

anxious about the return to work and if employers aren’t 

sensitive to this shift then it could adversely affect staff 

engagement, wellbeing, recruitment and retention. 

Worryingly nearly a quarter of SME owners responding 

to a survey revealed that they would not be consulting 

with their employees on their return to the workplace 

policies. 

I have advocated in my articles many times for better 

mental health support for staff. Coronaphobia* has 

taken many different forms during the pandemic 

therefore any steps to relieve anxiety in people returning 

to work must be a big consideration. Even smaller 

companies with limited resources can access free 

guidance online with helping employees cope with 

changes. MIND the mental health charity has a number 

of free Wellness Action Plans. 

As life becomes busier again it’s imperative that 

communication is maintained in order to make the 

transition back to normality easier. Speak to your line 

manager about your fears and concerns and if you are 

a business owner LISTEN. When the pressure is on to 

increase revenue after the pandemic has eased it would 

be business suicide not to listen to the workers who are 

needed to reach those targets.

SAMUEL JACKSON

With the introduction of firearms, there 

soon developed a number of craftsmen who 

specialised in these new weapons. 

In the 19th century, 

Samuel Jackson 

became a wealthy 

Nottingham 

gunsmith as 

a result of the 

increasing demand 

for guns for 

sporting activities 

of all kinds. 

Guns such as muskets and rifles were not easy 

to produce. They were all handmade and as a 

result each one was unique. Parts were hand 

crafted and so were not interchangeable. For 

private individuals who used these weapons 

for sport this was not a problem. For the 

soldiers however, especially in wartime, this 

individuality in design and manufacture made 

for huge difficulties. By the end of the 18th 

century, however, a new European design for 

muskets with interchangeable parts enabled 

the first mass-order from America. 

From this point onwards, the manufacturing 

of guns changed, and a distinction between 

‘Gunsmith’ and ‘Gunmaker’ became clear. 

Gunmakers designed and produced weapons, 

and Gunsmiths fixed or serviced them. 

It appears Samuel Jackson fulfilled both 

requirements, as many quality weapons 

bearing his name are well sought after by 

collectors even today. 

Jackson’s company was started by his father 

on Church Gate, Nottingham. By the time 

Samuel took over the business, it was well 

established and already had a good reputation. 

This was something that Samuel maintained 

throughout his lifetime. 

produced alarm guns that were triggered by 

trip wires and bird scares. One of their other 

lines was the patent ball throwers that allowed 

practice of the now important game of tennis. 

Athletics were not forgotten, as the company 

also produced starting pistols. They advertised 

their guns at between £5 and £35 each and if 

you wanted to trade your gun in for a newer 

model they would refurbish the old one and 

arrange its resale. As well as weapons, the 

company produced all the accessories required 

by a sportsman of the day. Guncovers, game 

bags, and even dog leads and collars for the 

retrievers. 

The business was profitable and allowed 

Samuel to live well. As a man of means, like 

many of the town residents, he owned an 

allotment on what was then called Coppice 

Road, Mapperley (now called Ransom Road). 

These allotments in Nottingham are the oldest 

in the world. The Hungerhill Gardens in St Ann’s 

have existed since the 1600s as grazing areas 

for the city. 

The allotments became more formalised 

during the Victorian era and by the 1840s, 

the 75-acre site was established as “pleasure 

gardens”. They were hedged gardens, of a type 

that were common in the 19th century. Some 

had greenhouses and summer houses, many of 

the latter built from the rejected bricks easily 

available in the many brickyards which dotted 

the Mapperley plains. 

These gardens provided space and an 

opportunity for those who lived in the city 

to grow their own food as well as relax in a 

pleasant atmosphere. It allowed people like 

the Jackson family to escape the confines of 

the crowded city. By 1860 these allotments 

represented “the most extensive detached 

garden site in England”. Today they are listed 

as Parks and Gardens of Special Historic 

Interest.

Late bloomers 

Autumn is the time some 

of us cut back and tidy up 

our gardens ready for the 

winter. But the autumn 

garden can be full of 

colour as some plants 

are just beginning their 

show. Here’s some of my 

favourite late bloomers. 

Chrysanthemums are well 

known house plants but there 

are lots of lessor known types 

that thrive in the garden and 

are safe to leave out over 

winter. 

is totally perennial and hardy 

in well-drained soils. It gets 

tall (4-5ft / 120-150cm) but 

doesn’t need staking. There 

are two varieties to look out 

for – the unnamed pale lemon 

one and “Hanneys Lemon 

Drop” that is sunshine yellow 

with pale yellow tips to the 

petals. These are spreading 

plants so give them some 

room and dig them up in 

spring annually to keep them 

in check. The flowers are very 

fragrant and loved by bees 

and butterflies. 

Helianthus, perennial 

sunflowers, are some of the 

best late bloomers adding a 

splash of sunshine colour and 

perhaps more surprisingly 

a whiff of chocolate scent 

to the autumn garden. The 

variety “Bitter Chocolate” 

is just starting to flower at 

the end of September, and 

they exude the unmistakable 

scent of drinking chocolate 

on a warm, sunny day. For 

more flower power, but alas 

no scent, try the well-loved 

“Lemon Queen”, the large 

flowered “Happy Days” or the 

“Dixter Orange” is a short, 

bushy plant that is absolutely 

smothered with bright orange 

double flowers from mid- 

August and into October it still 

puts on a brilliant show. “Clara 

Curtis” is more subdued, with 

pale pink single flowers. 

Hardy Chrysanthemums 

can be left in the ground all 

year but should be lifted and 

divided in spring every two 

years. Give them a sunny spot 

in well-drained soil and they’ll 

give you a wonderful autumn 

display every year. 

Another flower just coming 

into its own is Bidens aurea. 

Not at all like the tender 

Bidens we use in hanging 

baskets this is more like the 

annual flowered Cosmos but 

Japanese Anemones have 

also been looking good in late 

summer and will continue 

to flower into the autumn. 

Mostly their flowers come in 

various shades of pink or pure 

white, each with a bold yellow 

knob at the centre. We grow 

“Honorine Jobert” (white) and 

“September Charm” (pink). 

They can take quite a while to 

get established in the garden, 

sometimes a few years, but 

once they get their roots 

down there’s no stopping 

them! In fact, make sure you 

are certain of the position 

when you plant them as the 

deep roots of an established 

plant will keep on coming 

through for a long time after a 

plant has been moved.

These are just a few of the 

late bloomers on display in 

our garden through autumn 

so I don’t rush to put the 

garden to bed for the winter 

too soon.

Honda Civic Type-R. 

No sooner has the bright red 

Civic arrived on the drive every 

passer-by stops to admire its 

cool design. “Look at those 

exhausts,” says my son Henry 

(5). It looks like a rocket. The 

rear is certainly striking thanks 

to the massive spoiler and then 

there are the subtle red brake 

callipers. Stroll round to the 

front and there are air vents 

by the side of the front doors; 

they’re on the bonnet too, further 

adding to its racing credentials. 

I wouldn’t like this behind me, 

that’s for sure. This is a Civic 

with a difference. A package to 

please any boy racer. 

A 169mph sports car for just 

over £30,000. A very easy way 

to lose that precious driving 

licence. So much respect is 

required. It reminds me of a 

considerably more expensive 

Maserati, which when the engine 

is started, the ground beneath 

literally vibrates. 

Honda Civic Type-R 

Tim Saunders is an advanced 

motorist and journalist. He

Although this doesn’t happen 

in the Honda the engine does 

vibrate the driver’s feet in the 

footwell. 

There’s a three-mode driving 

system operated by a switch 

in the centre next to the front 

passenger seat that allows the 

driver, or passenger for that 

matter, to choose between 

Comfort, Sport or +R setting. 

Basically Comfort is for everyday 

driving, a more relaxed setting, 

Sport gives a little enhancement 

while +R unleashes everything 

it has to offer, ideal for a track 

day. The latter is sort of Maserati 

mode; a louder noise from that 

exhaust, tighter suspension. In 

fact driving in +R mode reminds 

me of the time I went on a 

Honda powerboat; the same type 

of g-force is thrust upon the 

occupants. Defi nitely one for the 

adrenalin junkies among you. 

I do like the red and black suede 

steering wheel; very comfy to 

hold and the slightly squashed 

circle shape of the wheel is 

appealing. The power steering is 

quite hard and race car like as 

you might expect, compared to 

other cars.

JAPANESE SHOJI BLINDS - MADE IN NOTTINGHAM!

In 2012 Sarah Beeny demonstrated on TV the first 

lightweight Shoji blinds and room dividers in the 

UK. 

Nick at Highbury Design in Arnold explained what 

happened- ‘we had been told this was a niche market, 

and with a million viewers we thought we might get 

20 or 30 website ‘hits’ with maybe a couple of orders, 

so we thought we would spend a little time making 

Shojis for the programme. Up until 10 minutes before 

the programme end we had had no ‘hits’ but then she 

demonstrated how they can be used as sliding panel 

blinds or as room dividers, and within two hours our 

website collapsed- we had 2,500 ‘hits’ and another 

8,000 were to follow- and it all went crazy. Japanese 

TV called asking for our opinion on the effect of 

Japanese culture on Western civilisation; we had to 

make a ‘Shoji Tokonoma’ for the Chelsea Flower Show 

and it built up from there.’

Nottinghamshire Police leading the way as crime 

plummets 

The overall fall in crime recorded in 

Nottinghamshire was way ahead of 

the national average and only bettered 

only by the City of London Police – 

which covers just a square mile of the 

capital. 

New national statistics, recently 

released, show robberies, burglaries, 

knife crime and other serious offences 

all plummeted, marking a sustained 

drop which started well before the 

impact of the pandemic. 

Continued investment in specialist 

policing teams and more officers helped 

the force to record an overall annual fall 

in crime of 21% – comfortably ahead of 

the national average of 14%. 

The new figures, released by the Office 

for National Statistics, show 22,239 

fewer offences were recorded in the 12 

months to April 2021. 

Burglaries fell by 34%, robberies by 36% 

and theft offences by 33% and serious 

sexual offences saw a significant 

reduction too. 

Offences of violence with injury fell by 

25% and knife crime by 15%, as officers 

continued with a raft of proactive 

initiatives in pursuing those who cause 

communities most harm and preventing 

offences. 

The force’s own figures for the same 

period showed trafficking in controlled 

drugs saw an 11% increase, a credible 

and much welcomed result based upon 

sustained targeting of dealers and an 

abundance of community intelligence. 

Many drugs operations were carried 

out by the force’s 12 different Operation 

Reacher teams in addition to the force 

Serious and Organised Crime Taskforce. 

Chief Constable Craig Guildford said: 

“Today’s figures confirm the continuation 

of some extremely positive trends 

witnessed before the start of the 

pandemic. I am delighted not only that 

we are out-performing almost every other 

force in the country, but also that some 

of the biggest falls have been reported in 

areas where we have taken the decision 

to invest in specialist teams of front-line 

officers and detectives. 

“Our two knife crime teams are now out 

and about every day in locations across 

the county and our network of Operation 

Reacher teams have been causing drug 

dealers and other criminals sleepless 

nights with a relentless series of early 

morning raids. They have now notched 

up more than 500 different raids and will 

continue to add to this number in the 

coming weeks and months. 

“Our designated robbery teams, 

meanwhile, have also overseen an 

increase in detection rates of more 

than ten percent – meaning that 

more criminals are being arrested and 

charged.” 

“Again, I am delighted by these excellent 

results and would like to extend my 

thanks to every officer and staff member 

who made them possible. In uniquely 

difficult and demanding circumstances 

they have risen to the challenge and 

allowed us to better support victims 

of crime, bring offenders to justice 

and build ever stronger links with the 

communities we serve. I am sure 

residents will also be reassured to know 

that during the same period we recruited 

an additional 202 new police officers to 

help us continue with our vital work in 

reducing the number of victims.”

Nottingham residents are being invited to don their 

walking gear, lace up their boots, and unite against 

dementia by signing up to Alzheimer’s Society’s 

Memory Walk taking place this Autumn. 

Hundreds of Alzheimer’s Society supporters will 

put their best foot forward at Wollaton Park on 

19th September 2021 alongside family, friends and 

colleagues to raise money for the charity. 

Over a year since the pandemic began, people with 

dementia are still bearing the brunt of coronavirus 

and demand for Alzheimer’s Society’s services is still 

increasing. Memory Walk will bring together people 

who have been personally affected by dementia, 

those who want to walk to remember a loved one, and 

people looking for a fun-filled activity to raise money 

for charity at 20 locations across England, Wales and 

Northern Ireland. 

Supporters can also opt to walk on their own, or 

with loved ones, on the paths, pavements, parks or 

pebbles in a location of their choosing throughout 

September. 

By marching out in support of Alzheimer’s Society, 

walkers will raise crucial funds to help the charity 

reach more people through its vital services, like the 

Dementia Connect support line, which have been 

used more than five million times since March 2020. 

The deadline for signing up is 15 September. You can 

sign up for free at alzheimers.org.uk/memorywalk.

HOMES URGENTLY NEEDED FOR TRAINEE GUIDE DOGS

Sight loss charity 

Guide Dogs urgently 

needs volunteers in 

Nottingham to care 

for trainee guide dogs, 

whilst they prepare to 

become life-changing 

guides. The charity’s 

volunteer Fosterers 

provide temporary 

homes for dogs, as they 

complete the latter 

stages of their guide dog training. 

Guide Dogs covers the cost of all the food, veterinary 

care and equipment required for each dog and provides 

volunteer Fosterers with full training and support. 

The organisation is in urgent need of at least 25 new 

homes in the Nottingham area for its future guide dogs. 

As part of the role, Fosterers would be required to 

drop dogs at the Nottingham Guide Dogs centre in 

Phoenix Business Park, just outside Bulwell, on weekday 

mornings and collect them again in the evening. 

A guide dog begins its formal training at around 12-14 

months old and, in normal circumstances, most dogs 

qualify as working guide dogs by the age of two. 

Volunteer Fosterers usually care for dogs that are 

between 14-24 months of age. 

The two main breeds the charity uses are Labradors and 

Golden Retrievers, which are crossed to gain the best 

characteristics of each breed.

POST-LOCKDOWN LIFE FOR DOGS

It’s great news for us all that COVID-19 restrictions 

are beginning to ease. However, this may not 

be the case for some dogs, especially if you’ve 

acquired a furry friend during the beginning of 

lockdown. 

All these dogs have known is a limited number of 

people who have been able to have close contact 

with them. Their walks have been quiet, with limited 

noise, people and traffic. They haven’t experienced 

new places, different areas and new smells. What 

will life be like for your dog post-lockdown? 

Here are several tips to help your companion adjust: 

New situations 

Too many challenges will overwhelm them and can 

cause nervous behaviour which could develop into 

a fear phobia. It’s therefore a good idea to gradually 

introduce your dog to new situations. 

To prevent a fear phobia occurring, slowly build up 

new experiences by providing lots of praise and 

rewards. Linking new exposures to positive training 

methods will enhance your dog’s ability to cope. 

For example, instead of inviting friends into your 

house where your dog is not used to having 

strangers, you could arrange to meet up with friends 

and go for a dog walk which exposes your dog to 

new people paired with fun distractions. 

Out and about 

Take a trip to an outdoor shopping centre where you 

and your dog can sit and watch the world go by. Take 

treats with you to reward calm behaviours in a busy 

environment. Staying too long may overwhelm your 

dog so it’s a good idea to keep visits short but often, 

until they get used to different environments. 

Slow and steady changes 

Have you been working from home during the 

pandemic? Slow changes to your routine will help 

your dog adjust to their new way of life. Dogs often 

find it difficult to be left on their own as they’re very 

sociable, hence why they make great additions to 

the family. It’s a good idea to prepare them to cope 

without you at home. Start by leaving your dogs 

when they are sleeping, eating or playing – try 

closing the door behind you and sitting in another 

room. 

Keeping your dog company 

If you haven’t had time to get your dog used to being 

left alone, or you’ve recognised that your dog is not 

coping well, don’t ignore the situation. Act quickly to 

prevent it from getting any worse. While you go out, 

ask family or friends to sit with your dog or arrange 

for a dog walker to walk your dog when you go back 

to work. This will limit the time your dog is left on 

their own. If you are going to be away for a long 

period of time possibly look into a doggy day-care 

facility. 

Training 

Training classes can help you to deal with the 

adolescent teenage years of your dogs’ life. It is 

part of their normal development however, it can 

sometimes be a difficult time for dog owners as their 

beloved friend seems to have forgotten lots of what 

they were taught. A little help from a dog trainer can 

really help get your dog get back on track.

Dogs smell – fact. They smell worse when they 

are wet and they smell significantly worse if they 

decide to roll in something, as I know only too well. 

Previously, I have mentioned that Gary and I have 

an odourometer – basically if we can get halfway 

home from a walk without gagging then Herbie has 

escaped the dreaded bath.

On a recent trip to Northumberland, we were 

walking along a deserted, wind-swept beach when 

the little scamp disappeared into the dunes. After a 

10 minute search, we found him in his high delights, 

rolling over a rotting seal carcass. After a struggle, 

Gary eventually managed to get a lead on him 

and literally drag him off the disgusting thing. He 

then proceeded to head dive into the sand and roll 

around in ecstacy for another 5 minutes (Herbie, 

not Gary). 

Heading back to the rented cottage, it slowly 

dawned on us that the putrid smell of death 

following us was in fact Herbie. Luckily, the cottage 

was within walking distance, but with no dog 

shampoo and an upstairs bathroom we had to 

innovate. After finding some kids shampoo and a 

mop bucket we kept washing him in the garden until 

he smelt more like watermelon than warthog. 

Worse for us, this time we had driven. There was no 

way he was getting in the car smelling like a corpse. 

After pondering all the options (leave him on 

the beach, take him home stinking, wash him in 

the sea), we proceeded to one end of the beach 

where Gary stripped down to his undercrackers 

and dragged the little sod into the sea where he 

attempted to wash him with a seaweed flannel. 

I helpfully recorded the whole sorry incident for 

social media whilst almost wetting myself. It was 

only as Gary emerged from the waves like 007 

(more like 005½) that we realised an elderly couple 

had perched on a bench at the back of the beach 

and were chuckling away whilst tucking into their 

pack-up. Who needs the cinema? 

Day three was thankfully incident free, however 

our final day held more olfactory delights. Beach 

number three. Dead seal number three (how 

can that be??) This one was buried in the sand, 

disguised as a rock. It was only when the rolling 

started that we realised what it was. Too late. 

Again. The damage was done. And this was just 

before we set off home so we had no access to the 

cottage and it was way too cold for another strip 

bath with Gary. 

Day two. Another beach. Another dead seal. Before 

we knew what was going on, Herbie was rolling all 

over the rotting pile of blubber. This one still had all 

it’s teeth! Gross. 

There was no option but to pile him in the back of 

the car and for us to spend the next few hours with 

the windows down, wondering whether the rescue 

centre had a returns policy! 

We were reliably informed by a local, it had been 

on the beach for 14 months after being towed by a 

tractor back out to sea a number of times. Errr, try 

burying it then, instead of leaving it to rot.

Football almost came home 

the eve of the European Championship football 

final. We were all quite excited to put it mildly but 

it turned out not to be the win we all dreamed of 

despite Luke Shaw’s brilliant goal in the opening 

minutes. But, all told, it was a great experience and 

to a final. And up to that point, for me, that was the 

greatest tournament performance I had seen.

this level of football is expected from an England fan.

with football, while my daughter can take it or leave 

it. But she watched all the recent England games and 

a fair few more besides. She drew Austria in a class 

sweepstake and was genuinely interested in their 

lack of progress. 

One of the benefits to watching these sorts of 

tournaments is seeing how the kids take it all in. 

Whilst my son is a walking rolodex of stats and 

work out how to pronounce the names of North 

Macedonian midfield. And we don’t replay the games 

with Subbuteo (seriously, it was massive back in the 

day), we recreate tournaments on the FIFA video 

game instead. And it’s a bit weird when you think 

about the whole concept: I’m not remotely interested 

born here, or even at all so to get obsessed by a flag 

or an indeterminate patch of ground is frankly absurd. 

But I do take pride in the performance of our sports 

teams, and I understand how that may come across

fingers were well and truly crossed. The start was 

worse when you experience it through your children. 

When Rashford and Sancho came on I fatefully joked 

to my son that one of them would probably miss a 

penalty as Man United always seem to offer up some

aged 10, all of whom should feel at 

home swinging through the trees. 

Our session started with a safety 

briefing, being strapped into a harness 

and then practicing using the 

safety equipment, clipping onto the 

safety lines and swapping from one 

obstacle to another.

After this we were set free to traverse 

the course by ourselves. We 

climbed a ladder up into the tree 

tops and then decided which out of 

two routes to take. The trails involve 

crawling through barrel type tunnels, 

edging along tightrope wires, 

stepping across wooden slats, zip 

wires to the ground and much, 

much more. My favourite and scariest 

moment was swinging across 

into a cargo net after dropping a 

few feet first. The whole experience 

was great for someone like me who 

was determined to fight my fear of 

heights and have a fun day out with 

the family. 

The whole adventure from start 

to finish lasted about 3 hours and 

was a fantastic day out with lots of 

laughs and monkeying around. 

Did you know that the Go Ape idea 

was dreamed up by Tris and Becs 

back in 2001 when they were on 

holiday in France and came across 

a family swinging through the trees. 

They saw how much fun they were 

all having and came up with the 

idea of Go Ape. Thanks Tris and 

Becs we loved our adventure.

Hucknall, we have an instrumental group (grade 5 & above) 

& a choir. We make beautiful music & raise money for local 

charities. We are always looking for new members, but

Trent Valley Singers - a friendly, mixed voice choir who 

sing a wide variety of music.Having been unable to meet 

since the start of the pandemic we are excited to be starting 

rehearsals again on Thurs Sept 2nd with our new musical

Mirabilé Vocal Ensemble will be performing at
