Latta keen to further her winning run
Lisa Latta will be out to build on her record tally of wins this season with a Listed victory in tomorrow's
NZ$65,000 Opunake Cup (1400m) at New Plymouth.
The Awapuni trainer has won 74 races this season- seven more than her previous best of 67, set last
season.
Zennista (NZ)
Her successes include eight Group or Listed races and she sits in third place on the national trainers,
premiership, behind John Sargent (105) and Kevin Myers (81).
Latta has' two robust chances in the Opunake Cup in quality mares Zennista (NZ) (Zenno Rob Roy) and
Sacha (NZ) (Keeper).
Both are noted wet-track performers and are expected to strike conditions to suit with the New Plymouth
course yesterday rated as a heavy 11 and unlikely be upgraded before raceday.
Zennista's form is hard to fault, backing up from her good record last season when she was runner up to
Midnight Oil (NZ) (Keeper) in the Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks. So far this campaign Zennista (NZ) has
picked up two wins and a second in Listed races.
Latta gave Zenna Rob Roy four-year-old Zennista (NZ) a brief letup after winning the Listed Wanganui
Challenge Stakes (1600m) on June 2 and the Opunake Cup will serve as a lead-up to the Gr.3
NZ$100,000 Winter Cup (1600m) at Riccarton on August 4.
Zennista (NZ) went to Levin for a jump-out last week to sharpen her up for tomorrow's race and came
through the outing well.
"She went nicely in that, so that should have cleaned her up after her break," Latta said. "She maybe a
little bit vulnerable on Saturday and there will be a little bit of improvement in her, but her work has been
good and she's a classy mare, there's no doubt about that."

While, Latta was expecting a bold run from Zennista (NZ), she predicted that Sacha (NZ) was ready to go
a big race.
The winner of nine races, Sacha (NZ) finished a good third in last year's Opunake Cup won by Bruce
Almighty (NZ) (Deputy Governor ) on a heavy track.
Sacha (NZ) has not been in the winner's circle in 10 races since winning the Manawatu Cup Prelude
(2000m) at Awapuni in December. But Latta wasn't disappointed with her recent form and said the mare
was showing signs that she was back to her best.
Back-to-back fourth placings in weight-for-age company at Wanganui and Tauranga, before a last start
seventh at Awapuni, were encouraging efforts, she said.
"She didn't have all favours at either place [Wanganui or Tauranga] and last start we put on the apprentice
[Bridget Grylls] and I thought she went well enough. "That run was to just to tidy her up for the Opunake
Cup which is what we've set her for. She's fit and I'd expect a nice run from her."
Reflecting on her season, Latta plumped for Platinum Princess (NZ) (Keeper), Gr.2 Coupland Bakeries
Mile win at Riccarton as her highlight.
"It would be nice to get another one (stakes win] before the end of the season," she said.
Latta will have one more chance after the Opunake Cup, with promising two-year-old Authentic Paddy
(NZ) (Howbaddouwantit) expected to contest the Listed Ryder Stakes at Otaki tomorrow week.
Authentic Paddy (NZ) was a stylish laststart winner at Awapuni on July 7 and runner up in his only two
other races.
The Opunake Cup has drawn a handy lineup of winter sprinters chasing one of the richest prizes on offer
over the winter months.
The main dangers to the Lattatrained duo look to be topweight I Am Sam (NZ) (Al Akbar), the ultraconsistent
Rememba Howe (NZ) (Handsome Ransom) and northern visitors, Atom Cat (NZ)
(Traditionally) and Worthing (NZ) (Danroad).
Paul Jenkins will endeavour to bow out of New Zealand racing on a winning note at Ruakaka tomorrow.
The Matamata trainer will produce Nicole Amy (NZ) (Le Bec Fin) and Victorveto (NZ) (O'Reilly) as his
last New Zealand runners before he shifts to Queensland.
Jenkins, 52, follows in the
footsteps of his Melbourne
Cup-winning brother Brian
Jenkins in shifting to
Australia and his move will
mark the end of an era for
one of New Zealand’s most
prominent training families.
‘‘One or other of my family
have been licensed here for
the last 35 or 40 years, I
suppose,’’ Jenkins said
yesterday. ‘‘If it wasn’t my
father, it was one of my
brothers or myself. We’ve
been involved in the game
here for a long time.’’
Jenkins’ father Peter trained out of Takanini, as did his brother Gary, while Brian was based at Cambridge
before he shifted to Melbourne in 2006.
Jenkins launched a stinging attack on the state of New Zealand when broaching on the subject of the
reason for his departure.
‘‘Economics and I can’t see it getting any better here,’’ he said.
Jenkins comments follow the same concerns brought up by jockey Mark du Plessis, who returned from
Hong Kong this week and was reported as saying: ‘‘It's great to be back. New Zealand will always be
home to me. But something will have to be done about our racing here or it will just die.’’
Jenkins has enjoyed good success in his training career, winning Group One races on both sides of the
Tasman, with Bazelle (NZ) (Zabeel) and King Keitel (NZ) (Keitel) two of his main flagbearers.
He was at one stage private trainer for businessman Eric Watson, who raced King Keitel (NZ) the winner
of the Gr.1 Doomben Cup in 2001 and Gr.2 Counties Cup in 2000.
But despite King Keitel’s Australian Gr.1 win, he rated Bazelle’s Gr.1 Auckland Cup triumph in 2005 as
his most satisfying win.
‘‘Growing up in Takanini, that was something you always aspired to and I was able to come through and
achieve it,’’ Jenkins said.
Jenkins has campaigned horses in Queensland during winter for the past 12 years and said he was looking
forward to setting up a small stable at Caloundra.
He said he would initially have a team of ‘‘six to eight’’ horses in work, with five horses already there,
including promising filly Putyourfaithinme (God's Own), Matabrahma (Darci Brahma) and unraced
Keeper three-year-old Bruntwood (NZ) (Keeper), whom he had high regard for.
Nicole Amy (NZ) and Victorveto (NZ) were both ‘‘possible candidates’’ to join the team, Jenkins said.
Wet weather thwarted the chances of Group One winner Vonusti (NZ) (Ustinov) in the Glasshouse
Handicap and trainer Alan Jones fears a similar scenario at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Vonusti (NZ), winner of the 2010 Group One Telegraph Handicap in New Zealand when trained by Tim
Carter, was sent to the Sunshine Coast-based Jones last month for a Queensland winter campaign.
But he beat just one runner home in
the Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) on
a bottomless track.
He makes his second Australian
appearance in Saturday's Listed
Tattersall's Mile (1600m) in which
Glasshouse winner Belltone (Brahms)
again looms large.
"He was sent over to get away from
the wet in New Zealand because he's
no good in the wet," Jones said. "But
it's never stopped raining since he's
been here.
"He was no hope (in the Glasshouse
on a heavy 10), particularly being on
the inside which was a no-go zone.
"But it's just one of those things. You can't change the weather."
Judging by the gelding's wellbeing, Jones believes Vonusti (NZ) is definitely up to winning races in
Australia and expects an improved showing in the Tattersall's Mile provided he gets a firmer surface than
at the Sunshine Coast.
"The horse is well, he looks really good and has done really well," Jones said. "But if he strikes another
wet track then we're in trouble.
"It's raining here now but they say it's going to stop and be fine on Thursday and Friday so it will be
better than the track he struck last time."
Eagle Farm was rated in the slow range on Wednesday.
Vonusti (NZ), a rising eight-year-old, has won nine of his 49 starts but went winless for more than two
years between his Telegraph success and a victory in May at his last start in New Zealand.
A final field of 12 was declared for the Tattersall's Mile with Vonusti (NZ), to be ridden by Larry
Cassidy, coming up with barrier three.
Eye Liner Stakes and Glasshouse winner Belltone has the outside gate and topweight of 59kg while last
start Listed Ascot Handicap winner Adnocon has barrier nine.
Jones believes Belltone will be very hard to beat again.
"He won the Glasshouse easily," he said.
John Sargent will use a trans Tasman blueprint which has produced outstanding results for a fellow New
Zealand trainer as he prepares to open a Sydney stable next month.
"I would like to get to the stage where my New Zealand stable will be a feeder stable for Sydney,"
Sargent said. "It would be worked on a similar model to the one Mike Moroney uses."
"I'm thinking I'll be in Sydney about 20 of the 30 days of the month."
Moroney has a Matamata base but he has climbed the
Australasian training ranks on the back of consistent
Group One results from his Flemington stable.
Sargent, who also trains out of Matamata, is close to
opening a Sydney stable after securing an off-track
facility at Warwick Farm.
"I'm in the process of checking out accommodation
for my staff but I hope to be up and running in the
first week of August," he said.
His Queensland Oaks winner Quintessential (NZ)
(Fast 'n' Famous) and Group One-placed two-year-old
Magic Shaft (Shaft) promise to be early mainstays of
his full-time foray into Australian racing.
Sargent, who will take a hands-on role at Warwick
Farm, says he will have a select number of runners as
he settles in.
"I'm planning to start off with eight to ten horses but
I'll have access to 25 boxes," he said. "I expect I'll be
spending a lot of time in Sydney because I don't think
satellite stables work properly if you are not there.
Sargent will be in Australia on Tuesday to inspect Quintessential who is in pre-training on the NSW south
coast, about two hours from Sydney.
He said a definitive spring campaign had not been confirmed for the Fast `n' Famous filly who belied her
sire's speed influence to claim the Queensland Oaks and run second in the Queensland Derby during the
Brisbane winter carnival.
"She'll run in Sydney and I had it in mind for her to resume in the Warwick Stakes (next month) but it
might be too soon for her," he said. "There's the Caulfield Cup in Melbourne but again it might come
around a bit too quickly.
"If not, she might go down for the Mackinnon (Stakes). She's not a big horse and she doesn't need a lot of
fast gallops."
Sargent said recent NSW prizemoney increases made Sydney an obvious centre to expand his stable.
"It's a no-brainer really but you can't expect to go in and rip and tear," he said. "You have to have the
right horse who can be placed in the right races."
Epsom Handicap-bound Said Com (NZ) (O'Reilly) has started his spring build up on the right note with
an eye-catching barrier trial win at Rosehill.
The Group One placegetter was making his first public appearance since the Sydney autumn carnival and
was given a massive spring endorsement from jockey Hugh Bowman after winning a 900m heat.
"He trialled super and felt great," Bowman said after Said
Com's half-neck win over stablemate The Shooter
(Bradbury's Luck).
The Chris Waller-trained gelding is being aimed towards
the Group One Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick in
October.
The rising four-year-old highlighted his Randwick mile
credentials with a close second to star filly Mosheen
(Fastnet Rock) in the Group One Randwick Guineas in
March.
Said Com (NZ) settled in behind the speed on the fence
but once clear, he reeled in his rivals under his own steam in a pleasing return.
Trainers Brian Kan and Tommy Tse have labelled Sino Estrela (NZ) (Thorn Park) as their greatest
winning chance in Macau this weekend, when he lines up in the MAC-LR Lisboa Sand Challenge
(1350m) at Taipa on Friday.
Sino Estrela (NZ) was successful over this distance and on the sand surface two starts ago in a time of
1.22.00. At his next start, his first at stakes level, he stepped back in distance to 1050 metres and finished
sixth to Red Of China (NZ) (Bachelor Duke) in the MAC-LR Lisboa Sand Prelude.
The son of Thorn Park will clash
with Red of China (NZ) again on
Friday. Trained by two-time
champion Macau trainer George
Moore, three-year-old gelding Red of
China (NZ) is looking to land his
fourth career win.
The other NZ-breds set to contest the
HK$550,000 feature race for two and
three-year-olds will be last start
winner My Cup of Tea (NZ) (Mr.
Nacho) and the William Lai-trained
SINGAPORE
Here comes Junior
Fresh from bringing Super Easy’s unblemished record to 11 from 11 in last Sunday’s Sgp3 Paititi Gold
Trophy (1200m), trainer Michael Freedman is already hard at work putting the final touches on another
“Super” horse.
Going with his dominant victory in one of the barrier trials on Tuesday, Super Junior (NZ) (Darci
Brahma), an unraced two-year-old by the same sire as Super Easy’s, Darci Brahma, has certainly drawn
plenty of hype even before he steps into his racing plates at Kranji.
Super Junior (NZ)
Ridden by Super Easy’s
regular partner Joao
Moreira, Super Junior (NZ),
who as his name suggests is
also raced by the same
connections as Super Easy
(NZ), the Joy N Happiness
Stable, found the lead after
300m before opening up for
a commanding break at the
top of the straight to
eventually pull away from
the pack for a 6 ¼-lenth win
from The Great Grey
(Bradbury's Luck) in 1min
1.12secs.
A NZ$100,000 yearling purchase at last year’s Karaka Sales in New Zealand, Super Junior (NZ) has a
hard act to follow in his unbeaten stablemate, but his record of three barrier trial wins from as many runs
puts him in good stead.
While the colt’s first two wins were arguably not as breathtaking, Tuesday’s romp with blinkers on for
the first time has left plenty of room for the imagination.
“Joao rode him at his first trial and he won, but he said he was looking around a lot,” said Freedman.
“After Joao went away (to Brazil for holidays) for a couple of weeks, Steve (Baster) rode him at his
second trial. He also said he had to push him a fair bit and he was having a good look around.
“I’m not the sort who likes to trial my two-year-olds too often, but I made an exception with this one as
he is also a gross sort who needs more work.
“He was also very laid back and lazy when he got here. That was why I decided to put a set of blinkers on
him to straighten him up this morning, and he won a very nice trial.”
The S$200,000 Sgp3 Magic Millions Juvenile Championship (1200m) is coming up next Sunday week
(July 29), but Freedman, who also prepares Super Good (NZ) (Fastnet Rock), a winner last Sunday, and
the unraced Super Shadow (NZ) (Darci Brahma) and Super Ninetyseven (Show A Heart) for the same
owners, is not one to get ahead of himself.
“I don’t know if he will go for the Magic Millions Juvenile Championship or not. I’ll have to see how he
gets on with the job first,” said Freedman. “It’s quite a big ask to get a two-year-old to have his first race
in a race as particularly important as the Juvenile.

“Besides I’ve already got two other good two-year-olds in Empire Bay and Super Good, who both won
over the weekend.”
Freedman was taking the same tried-and-tested approach he adopted with Super Easy (NZ) when he first
arrived. Unlike Super Junior (NZ) who is unraced, the eventual Singapore juvenile and 3YO champion
landed in Singapore with a record of three runs (including one win and a fourth in the Karaka Million),
but still skipped the Juvenile to make his Kranji debut as a three-year-old on August 7.
“No doubt he (Super Junior) is a nice horse but I think he will learn more about racing with more
experience under his belt,” he added. “I think he will be a better horse for the Singapore Three-Year-Old
Challenge next year.”
Freedman said he bought Super Junior (NZ) after he was told by Andre Lim and Hong Ying Kwee, the
two partners of Joy N Happiness Stable, to look out for any Darci Brahmas at the Karaka Sales.
“At the time, we already had an idea how good Super Easy was. The owners only told me it would be
nice if we could buy another yearling by Darci Brahma,” recalled Freedman. “I spoke with my
bloodstock agent Michael Wallace and he shortlisted a selection of half a dozen and we settled for this
one.
“He was bred by a good friend of mine, Peter Vela of Pencarrow Stud. I also liked the dam side –
Summary – who is by (Golden Slipper winner) Tierce and has a nice pedigree.
“He was quite a gross immature type, though, and that was probably why he didn’t sell as well. We paid
only NZ$100,000 for him.
“I told the owners I thought he was a slow developing sort when we bought him and we should leave him
in New Zealand a bit longer to let him mature further.
“He however has a lovely temperament and that to me is one of the qualities of a good horse.”
A shared breeding philosophy developed under the tutelage of Clive Harper in Levin some twenty years
ago is responsible for the mating of Chase Me (NZ) (Storm Creek), the winner of the Singapore Derby.
The impressive eight length winner was bred by Noeline Redfern of Masterton, and Peter Jenkins, now
based at Arrowfield Stud’s office in Sydney.
success as a breeder.”
NZ RACING, BREEDING & STUD NEWS
Singapore Derby winner provides breeders with greatest thrill
Chase Me (NZ)
For both it is the
first stakes winner
they have bred,
although Jenkins
has been involved
in planning the
matings of a
number of stakes
performers, and
both are equally
thrilled with their
success.
“It was a great
thrill, we were
ecstatic watching it
on television - he
just annihilated
them,” enthused
Redfern. “It’s by
far my biggest

Jenkins on the other hand, a noted pedigree analyst and adviser, has only bred 18 foals himself, nine of
whom have raced for six winners.
Redfern, who inherited her passion for horses from her father Ben Archer, himself a notable owner and
breeder in New Zealand's Central Districts in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, has pottered around with a few
mares for years including some descendants of her father’s Railway winning mare Lucrative (NZ)
(Beaulivre).
The pair met at the regular Levin breeding seminars held on Sunday afternoons by Harper in the early
nineties, and soon after Peter Jenkins acquired the Niniski mare Nile Lark for Redfern to breed from.
A winner over two and a half miles in Great Britain, Nile Lark was well related - from the same family as
Group One Prix Hocquart winner Cadoudal (Green Dancer) - and she went on to leave four winners.
Both Harper and Jenkins encouraged Redfern to mate the mare to Gold Brose and she produced a nice
filly called Cartier Gold (NZ) who unfortunately didn’t make it on the racetrack. However, Redfern who
according to her husband Ron has too many horses and is too soft to part with any of them, decided to
send her to stud.
Her first mating was to Storm Creek who was based at Stoneybridge in Karaka where Peter Jenkins was
working, and according to him he was a cracking colt. Her next foal was a Hawkeye filly that is still on
Redfern’s property in Masterton.
“As a weanling the first foal was such a cracker that I suggested to Noeline that we send the mare back
there on my nomination to Storm Creek. The second colt wasn’t as smart as the first and despite being a
NZ$45,000 yearling he didn’t come up either so we decided to put this colt through the weanling sale.
“Brett McDonald bought him for NZ$4,000 which was disappointing but I was quite pleased that he had
gone to Brett as I knew he would get every opportunity to become a racehorse. He won a trial at
Whangarei and Brett then sold him.”
“The way he won the Singapore Derby, he could acquit himself just as well in Hong Kong or Dubai now
if he gets invited to either of those two places to race.”
Chase Me (NZ) has now won six races and run eight places from 23 starts for the Super Trio Stable, and
is trained by Desmond Koh.
Cartier Gold (NZ) has had one foal since she left Chase Me (NZ), a colt by Cecconi (AUS) and he is on
the Redfern property. Redfern is planning on mating the mare again this year, and admits that she will be
discussing her plans with Jenkins.
“I believe that what is on the pedigree page is just as important as conformation. Dad was a great believer
in conformation whereas I am more a pedigree person. I have been approached by a number of studs
already this week about where I am going to send her, but I will be applying Clive Harper’s theories to
the mating and then discussing it with Peter to get his opinion.
“Breeding a winner like Chase Me certainly makes it all worthwhile and gives us all a boost to keep
going,” she concluded.
Jackson leads new faces on NZ racing board
Alan Jackson's appointment as independent chairperson of the New Zealand Racing Board yesterday
received the rubber-stamp from Racing Minister Nathan Guy.
Guy also announced the appointments of Greg McCarthy, Rod Croon, Graham Cooney and Alistair Ryan
to the board.
Jackson was appointed as chairperson following consultation
with the racing industry, while McCarthy was nominated by
the thoroughbred racing code and Croon by the Harness
Racing Code.
Independent board members Cooney and Ryan were
recommended by the statutory nomination advisory panel,
following consultation with the industry.
"The board has a crucial strategic and leadership role to help
racing reach its potential as a strong and sustainable industry,"
Guy said.
"Racing is a major industry with a turnover of around $1.6
billion and supporting almost 9,000 fulltime equivalent jobs.
"The new appointments bring a valuable range of senior
business, marketing and industry experience. Their expertise
will help the NZRB to promote and develop this important industry.
"I want to thank chairman Michael Stiassny for his two terms of service, and the other outgoing members
for their work. The three racing codes are now working more closely together and the new board must
build on this good work."
Southern vendors gear up for South Island Sale
New Zealand Bloodstock's South Island Sale of Two-Year-Olds & Mixed Bloodstock (10 August) is now
just over three weeks away and vendors are busy getting their untried two-year-olds ready for this unique
Sale.
Featuring a catalogue of 154 two-year-olds plus three
broodmares, three yearlings and two unraced horses, the
South Island Sale offers the progeny of some of New
Zealand's leading sires, which will be offered by a good
mixture of northern and southern vendors.
The leading vendor by aggregate at the South Island
Sale for the last seven years, Edwina Morris and Alan
Jones' Berkley Stud draft is always highly anticipated.
The 2012 Sale will see the Christchurch based stud offer
the largest draft with 19 two-year-olds in their
consignment.
"We are very pleased with the draft, they are coming
along nicely and there is a horse to suit all buyers,"
commented Edwina Morris. "We have some nice twoyear-olds
by leading sires including O'Reilly, Pentire
and Stravinsky and 11 two-year-olds by Coats Choice
who stands at Berkley Stud."
Alan Jackson
Coats Choice

A son of Redoute's Choice, Coats Choice's dam is a half-sister to the Golden Slipper winner and sire
Catbird and he has made a good start to his stud career siring his third stakes winner this season in
Natuzzi and the equal top lot at the 2012 Karaka Festival Sale.
"Coats Choice is doing a great job," said Edwina. "He has had some good winners abroad with B Choice
winning his debut very impressively in Hong Kong before he was injured at his second start.
"In Singapore Coats Choice has been represented with Full Toss who claimed his second victory in June
at Kranji and is proving a consistent performer. In Macau Legal Lord won his debut earlier this month
and he has a very impressive horse heading to Hong Kong in Joyful the Great who won his only start in
New Zealand by three-and-a-half lengths."
Included in Berkley Stud's draft for the South Island Sale is a full brother to the dual stakes winner Milo
(Coats Choice) who won the Dunedin and Gore Guineas last season.
"He's a standout, a fantastic type. He has a very good temperament and is a good moving horse which is
typical of Coats Choice's progeny. The gelding out of Cashel Belle (Slavic) is a big strong individual and
he will also be popular."
Other highlights in Berkley Stud's draft include:
• Lot 49, the gelding by Stravinsky from the Group 2 City of Auckland Cup winning mare
Highflying (Entrepreneur).
• Lot 68, a brother to the triple stakes winning filly and New Zealand Bloodstock Southern Filly of
the Year Ombre Rose (O'Reilly) and half-brother to 10-time Australian winner Crabs
(Danasinga).
Based in the deep south in Dunedin - Otago, Brian and Lorraine Anderton's White Robe Lodge has had a
successful season with their resident sire Gallant Guru (Montjeu) siring his first stakes winner Ortem Fire
who won the Listed New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Stakes.
Trained by Brian & Shane Anderton, Ortem Fire was also stakes placed in the Warstep Stakes and
Southland Guineas and was crowned the 2012 New Zealand Bloodstock Southern Filly of the Year.
White Robe Lodge has a draft of 12 two-year-old colts heading for the South Island Sale and all are by
their resident sire Gallant Guru. A son of the champion sire Montjeu, Gallant Guru was a dual stakes
winner at three and won the Group 2 Sandown Classic at four.
"He has made a good start to his stud career siring his first stakes winner this season and he also had a
trial winner in Singapore last week," said Brian Anderton.
"I have got a number of Gallant Guru's progeny in my stable and they are lovely horses to work with and
everyone who is training his progeny are saying the same thing.
"All the two-year-olds in our draft are by Gallant Guru this year and they are all very nice horses with
plenty of scope and we are very happy with them.
White Robe Lodge will offer three two-year-olds from the family of dual Group 1 winner Prized Gem
(Prized). Gallant Guru's sire Montjeu has had success with the family siring Prized Gem's son Nom de Jeu
who won the Group 1 AJC Derby and is now standing at stud.
Other highlights in White Robe Lodge's draft include:
• Lot 82, the three-quarter brother to the stakes winner and this year's New Zealand Bloodstock
Southern Filly of the Year Ortem Fire (Gallant Guru).
• Lot 102, the colt from the Group 3 placed Group 1 performer Personal Column (Personal
Escort).
Agricultural Park on Friday 10 August from 11am. For more info contact www.nzb.co.nz.

Matamata trainer Paul Shailer will operate a satellite stable out of Awapuni next season.
It is a significant step for a trainer with just eight wins to his name, but Shailer - a former jockey who
spent 10 years working for top Sydney trainer Chris Waller, graduating to be assistant trainer - has his
sights set on being a potent force in the New Zealand training ranks.
horses, and hopefully we can do the same."
It is part of a major shift for Shailer Racing, which will
also move its Waikato base from the former Millfield
Stud to a 30-box stable at Matamata racecourse, left
vacant by Brisbane-bound Paul Jenkins, for the beginning
of the new season on August 1.
Shailer will take over the Awapuni stables of Peter
Hurdle, who is shifting to Sydney to take up a position
with leading trainers John, Michael and Wayne Hawkes.
Shailer said he would fill all 30 boxes at his Matamata
stables and send horses he believed would be better
strategically placed at Awapuni down there.
"Racing in the north is a bit stronger and I think that’s just
common knowledge,"Shailer said yesterday. "Lesser
horses that are struggling to win a race up here can go
down there and be competitive for the same prizemoney.
"The setup at Peter Hurdle’s is pretty good. There’s 22
boxes and 22 paddocks, so all the horses can have access
to both, and there’s a 10-horse walking machine.
"Pete’s had a lot of success from there, trained a lot of top
Shailer, who has yet to appoint a person to manage his Awapuni stable, hopes the new arm of his training
operation can help him reach his goal of becoming one of New Zealand’s top trainers.
"It’s a positive move and we want to expand, "Shailer said. "We’re young and new in the game but
having spent time with Chris Waller in Sydney, I’m used to having big numbers around me and it’s
something I want to strive for.
"We just want to take each season as it comes and we’d love to train a big team of horses and be
competitive with the likes of the Sargents and the Te Akaus and the Lisa Lattas.
"If we can get to that within the next five or 10 years, we’d be very happy."
Shailer, who rode more than 120 winners as an apprentice jockey, is in his second season of training in
New Zealand, since leaving Waller.
Among his team is Guess What (NZ) (Danroad), who ran fourth in the Group Three Waikato Guineas
and provided Shailer with his first New Zealand Derby runner, promising Volksraad filly Mapmaker
(NZ), impressive last-start Te Aroha winner Trepidation (NZ) (Falkirk), and two-year-old winners Killa
Question (NZ) (Any Suggestion) and Breaking Dawn (NZ) (Gold Mine).
Meanwhile, Hurdle will produce his last New Zealand runner, Pero (NZ) (Storming Home), at New
Plymouth on Saturday.
Hurdle’s son Ryan is already in Australia and is making waves in Queensland, apprenticed to leading
trainer Robert.
