"Our climate is changing, Why aren't we?" This is a common phrase we hear often and it rings true! Climate change is a global crisis demanding urgent action. If temperatures rise beyond 1.5 degrees Celsius (by a certain time), the consequences could simply be put - wiiiiillld! Recently, I participated in a course focusing on key essentials of the Paris Agreement, Sustainable Development and the law. The Paris Agreement is a legally binding international treaty on climate change and is very cardinal in helping strengthen global response to the potentially 'wild' consequences of climate change. I gained insights into how nations are striving to meet the Agreement's goals, particularly in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. I gained insight into the importance of Climate Finance mechanisms and how we can transition to net zero emissions. I also learned about Climate Compliance, Capacity and the Transparency Framework under the Paris Agreement among many other aspects of this course. I got to be in a room (virtually) filled with brilliant minds who share like-minded aspirations and I love that experiences like these provide the opportunity to be part of such Global Communities. This learning experience has fueled my commitment to Sustainable Development in Zambia ( something I have always been passionate about!). I'm eager to apply what I've learned and believe it will better equip me for my career aspirations. I am extremely grateful to the Democratising Education for Global Sustainability and Justice programme for the generous scholarship provided for this invaluable opportunity.

It's the International Day of Forests and the current El Nino event in Zambia has further shown just how important our forests are. Healthy forest ecosystems play a critical role in mitigating its impact. El Niño events often bring about erratic weather patterns, including prolonged droughts as has been experienced during the 23/24 agricultural season. Amidst these challenges, forests act as natural buffers, helping to regulate local climates and minimize the severity of instances such as the El Nino. They play a crucial role in water retention, soil stability, and carbon sequestration, which are essential for maintaining ecological balance and resilience against extreme weather events like El Niño. In light of this, it is key that we prioritize the conservation and sustainable management of our remaining forest resources. By safeguarding these vital ecosystems, we improve our capacity to adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate variability.
