Info

The species epithet "brevirostris" comes from Latin and means "short-beaked", its mouth and bulging forehead give the mammal its characteristic appearance.
The Irrawaddy is a freshwater river over 2100 kilometers long in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, from which the dolphin became known.

SeaLifeBase gives fresh and brackish water / estuaries as habitat. however, the dolphin also occurs in marine coastal areas, though the mammal is most often found in shallow, brackish, turbid waters at the mouths of rivers in southeastern Asia and Australasia.

Irrawaddy dolphins also co-occur with Gangetic dolphins (Platanista gangetica) in a relatively small portion of their range in the mangrove forests of the Sundarbans

The Irrawaddy dolphin's menu includes small fish and various crustaceans and cephalopods.

Unfortunately, these dolphins regularly die in fishing nets or from the ever-increasing pollution of the waters by humans!
